Dislike they're customer service, they drive me crazy. Best Buy is like that to an extent but not as bad. I can't walk 5 feet without someone asking me if i need help. I do all my shopping at Best Buy. I only buy something at Circuit City if i have to, i mean.. if they have the same thing cheaper or w/e.. i'll buy it.. but i try to keep that to a minimum.

Exact opposite for me. I think they have good customer service compared to Worst buy. I never have had anyone ask if i need help when i am browsing around (this is nice compared to Worst Buy where they try to push service contracts, magazines, doughnuts, and what else) CC seems to have better prices, but their computer dept. is pretty low.

Next year I will have a new CC in my town, so i'll probably even shop there even more than driving 8 miles to the nearest best buy

I used to love Circuit City.. but when Best Buy moved into to town,  i started shopping there. I like the atomsphere at Best Buy!

Circuit City is closing a ton of stores here in Michigan -- they doing that anywhere else?

I think it's funny that they use We're With You for a slogan, when that used to be the slogan of Kessel supermarkets in MIchigan.

Circuit City is/has closed lots of "under performing" stores and kept the higher volume locations.  Their biggest problem is that the stores are usually located very close to Best Buy.
Like em or not, Best Buy is twice the size of Circuit City and can offer a little better pricing on most things.  I agree, you are contstantly asked if you need help when walking around a Circuit City.  Nobody asks you at all when in Best Buy.  Guess it just depends if you like to be solicited for help or not.

One old slogan I remember of theirs was "Welcome to Circuit City. Where service is state of the art."

Does anyone remember the old commercials where they would show the front of the store being "plugged in"? On 1980's era locations, the entrances were made in a tall rectangle covered in red tile that was supposed to resemble a plug. In the TV ads, there was a CG ending that showed the rectangle being "plugged in" to the hole in the front of the building... The old CC here still has this shape, but the furniture store that's in there now covered up the red tile with some type of stucco. They left the 80's aluminum siding, though, and if you look closely you can still see where the signs saying "AUDIO" "VIDEO" "APPLIANCES", etc. were hung.

I will try to take a picture of the location here, which was built exactly like the one shown on TV, but int he meantime here is a location with a similar loooknig "plug" on the front of the building.

Hmmm... I can't get that to work!

Here is a picture of the old Circuit City here. The "plug" has had the red tile covered over with stucco, but the aluminum panels are original Circuit City design!

When Circuit City moved to a new location in the 1990's, they tore down a really, really dumpy 1960's K-Mart, but they recycled the roadside sign. Where it says "Northgate" is where the red "K" was, and where it says CC is where the turquoise "Mart" was. (Where it says Audio-Video-Computers is where it originally said "Northgate Shopping Center")

hey guys this is really cool!! Our circuit city was built in the early-mid 90's (Around 1994-95). I don't like circuit city's new logo. it's too "trendy' looking.

I also think today's Circuit City buildings look odd. So did the old ones, but those where unique to look like a giant plug. Remember in the old commercials in the 90's the building plugged into the ground at the end? Today's, like the one pictured below, have that small logo not it the middle but to the left a little on a yellowish gold whatever it is background. Just doesn't look right.

The Poughkeepsie, New York store is the only one I know of that still has the "plug" look, and old logo. I believe the Middletown store was recently remodeled. I don't remember. Next time I go there, I'll look.

In Dublin, CA they still have the "plug" design for the store.  If you go inside the doors and look to the ground you will see that they are still using a logo that is from the 70's or 80's!  (It is older than any logo shown on these two pages.)

Seekonk Mass still has the plug design and just underwent a remodeling. This is a pretty good size store. North Attleboro closed their plug store (it is now a Dollar Tree) and opened up a larger one nearby. They have the circle logo. I still prefer Best Buy since I think they have a better DvD selection as far as anime is concerned

Circuit City opening in Augusta

By ELIZABETH CARR

AUGUSTA -- A big red dot against a yellow background sits atop a 35,000-square-foot building as a symbol of the newest business development in The Marketplace at Augusta.
The newest addition, Circuit City, will have its grand opening celebration today from 6 to 10 p.m.
Two New England Patriots offensive linemen, Brandon Gorin and Tom Ashworth, will be on hand from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. The players will be selling autographed footballs for about $25, with the proceeds going to benefit the Boys & Girls Club at the Alfond Youth Center in Waterville and The Edge teen center in Augusta.
The store, which opened Feb. 17, sits next to Dick's Sporting Goods, and a still-under-construction Red Robin restaurant.
Customers are already taking advantage of the wide range of electronics they can find at the store.
"Business has been good so far and it's been busy," said store director Colin Miller.
According to Miller, the store carries "any electronic you can dream of that goes in your home."
That means plasma TVs, computers, video games, speaker systems and more.
The store employs 40 to 50 people.
"I think this is just great," said Bent Christensen of Albion, who was on his way to Kohl's with his wife when they decided to stop in to explore Circuit City.
"We try to do our main shopping in Waterville, but there are some things you can't get there, like Sam's Club and this," Bent said. "Having all of this here shortens our drive up quite a bit since we'd have to go to Portland or Bangor to get a store like this."
The Christensens were looking at DVDs in a section directly in front of the store's "Thumproom" featuring a room filled with walls of stereos and speakers.
According to the Kennebec Valley Chamber of Commerce, The Marketplace already serves about 200,000 people from Augusta and towns nearly an hour away.
"We're enjoying people coming in from Augusta and the surrounding areas," Miller said.
The recent opening in Augusta marks the third Circuit City in Maine. The others are in South Portland and Bangor.

The one in Meriden's only been open maybe two years at the most. I remember because they started building it about the same time they built the Best Buy in the Mall. Originally Ciricuit City was gonna be in the mall and Best Buy was gonan take the old Waldbaum's, but Circuit City decided they didn't want to be in the mall. It had to be about two years ago because Lord & Taylor closed in 2002 (not long after they opened) and Best Buy is part of the old Lord & Taylor.

You beat me to the punch, Marc82!  I found the article in the USA Today yesterday and am wondering if it will be another "Ames type" move if Blockbuster is starting to struggle and they go in and buy up an under-performing chain which could lead to their demise.  (Can you say Zayre, Gold Circle, etc.???)

Companies always make boneheaded moves. I'm originally from Bristol, Connecticut. HERMAN's Sports signed a 20 year lease in what was then Caldor Plaza not long after the company  (Hermans) filed for bankruptcy and shut down a bunch or stores.

Olympia Sports moved in a few years later. Then they swapped spots in the plaza with the party store. Only difference was the party store affiliated with PARTY CITY. They went out after only a few years. Sat vacant for years. Citibank took part of the space last year. And the gym next door expanded into the rest of the space. Citibank is closing this year.

Now I don't know if the Bristol Commons ever terminated Herman's lease or if all these places are subleasing the spot form Herman's.

The newer Circuit City sign is annoying. I like the old plug.

I agree. There was a Circuit City with the original plug design in Egg Harbor Township, NJ until about 2004. The last time I was there, I played the demo for Pokemon FireRed in the small video game section. It was also where we got our first computer. Now it's a K&G Men's Warehouse.

This is a nice picture. Apparently Williams Company (http://www.williamsco.com/projects.php?menu=retail&page=CircuitCity) has been building Circuit City building throughout the country since 1988.

so they were started in 1988???? thats as old as me lol

No, Circuit City started wayyyyyyy back in the 1940's as Wards (no relation to Montgomery Ward) and became Circuit City in the 60's. That company just started building CCs in 1988.

The new store just isn't that cool.

The one that is now K&G was at Shore Mall in Pleasantville/Egg Harbor NJ.
The mall opened in 1968.
The Sears closed way back and is now Boscov's
There is a Grant City turned Value City.
Across the street was a Bradlees and Rickel.
The Circuit City in Marple Crossroads in Springfield, PA
still has the plug design and old logo.
The Circuit City in Wilmington, DE has the plug painted yellow and the new logo.

"The Source by Circuit City" was a joint venture between Circuit City and RadioShack in Canada.

You mean that building with the red circle on it next to the Forman Mills (Which was Bradlees)? I don't know for sure, but I think that was an A&P. I once saw an A&P (I think it was on here actually) that looked just like that building.

I think Trumbull Circuit City opened in 1996 or 1997 in place of an old movie theater. I can't confirm this, perhaps someone can...

The style used by the Trumbull, CT Circuit City is actually newer than the Newington and Manchester ones. The red plug stores were first built around the late 1980's, and were used until about 1996 or 1997 like XISMZERO said when they introduced the kind of look that Trumbull's store has.

There seemed to be 2 versions of their last logo, the first one where was a red circle with circuit city in it, and then the second version with added a shadow to the letters and a silver ring/outline to the red circle.

First version of circle logo

I don't like how K&G, when renovating the old Shore Mall CC, cheaply made the ENTIRE building white, and I mean the whole thing. It actually looks like they just took a bunch of white plywood and slapped it all over the facade.

It didn't change all that much, still has the plug design facade. The building is on the site of the former Seekonk Twin Drive in and now has a large banner advertising space for rent. This Circuit City was tiny, dingy and rather hidden off Route 6. I did get some nice deals there now and again. The Big Lots and Staples you speak of are housed in the former Bradlees which was a PACE warehouse during it's first few years of existence. If I could have any electronics store back though I'd wish for Lechmere.

Meriden, Connecticut:

Savers - Opened August 2010.

Deal$ - Opened Late October 2010. Deal$ is owned by the Dollar Tree Coporation and seems to be like a Big Lots type store, but much cheaper. http://www.deals-stores.com/

And according to the website for Centro Realty there's still 6100 Sq. Feet Available for rent.

http://www.centroprop.com/LeasingBrochures/5109.pdf

This building was originally an A&P Super Foodmart. Years ago there was another building on this property that housed a Blockbuster, a Chinese restaurant, and several smaller stores, but they were all ripped down.

Basically it's on the same idea as the Dollar Tree stores, just that they offer items with different prices rather than just $1 (like $2, $3 etc.).  This way they can offer more items since they have a greater pricing range to work with.

If I remember correctly (only went in one once, since they aren't in this area of NY) they had it set up in sections with signs for the pricing (like all the $1 items, $2 items etc.).

It also was a separately owned chain at one point several years ago, and was then bought out by the Dollar Tree folks (I remember people discussing it at that time, since under the previous owners they accepted coupons (like Family $ and $ General do) and that stopped when Dollar Tree took over).

Edit: Late-January 2012 Updates!

North Olmsted, OH - Has been closed for years. Only other residents in plaza are a Giant Eagle grocery store and a Factory Card & Party Outlet. (FCO has recently closed. Isn't it owned by Party City? If so, it might have relocated to the NO Towne Center plaza in a new building in front of Target.) Still has original "angled plug" entrance present.

Elyria, OH - Closed with the company. Has been Halloween USA for two different Halloween seasons.

Parma, OH - Demolished; IIRC, its old lot is going to be home to a new Giant Eagle store.

Brooklyn, OH - Ridge Park Square - I think this one is now a Five Below, but I'm not sure. The old Circuit City is in the back "phase 4" building next to Lowe's, and is currently home to a Marc's Deep-er Discount Store. Five Below, contrary to prior belief, is way in the front of the RPS complex.

Keene, NH Circuit City while it was still opened. Opened in 2005 when the plaza was developed, closed in early 2009 and the logo was quickly taken off. I happened to be eating lunch across the lot the day they took off the logo. It has been vacant ever since with nothing in sight. A couple posts up I posted pictures of what it looks like without the logo

From Wikipedia
"Ultimate began a large expansion campaign in 2000 and by 2004 the company had doubled its store count to 64, leading to the company filing for bankruptcy."

Whats the point of gaining more stores if you are just going to go bankrupt from it?

It's sad that someone was stupid enough to waste that much money

I was driving out across town earlier, and I believe the old CC location at Ridge Park Square in Brooklyn, OH, is now an Ashley Furniture HomeStore. I didn't stop to look, but the Ashley signs were on the building that the CC signs used to be on.

Meanwhile, almost every other CC around here is sitting vacant/for lease. North Olmsted's (in the Water Tower Square plaza) is STILL vacant, from the days of the burgundy plug exterior! Those "For Lease" signs are so faded, it's not even funny.

A minor update: The CC in Elyria, OH, is still vacant, but the carpet store between that and Home Depot (which, many moons ago, started life as Buddy's Carpet) is now another new home for Jamie's Carpet Shop. I'm not sure if it's the same stock that's bounced between Amherst and Avon (Mattress Warehouse in French Creek Square was originally a Jamie's Carpet Shop for a very brief time; when it closed, MW moved from the front to the back, and EdenPure Heaters opened an outlet store over Christmas last year in the old front space), but it was surprising to see the name pop up again.

There was a Circuit City at the Crossgates Commons in Albany, NY that opened around 2001, so it was a newer store model. Closed with the rest of the chain in 2009, then became Ultimate Electronics in July 2010. UE was only open for about 9 months before the chain's bankruptcy and closure in April 2011. It then became an indoor go-kart place called Fastrax Raceway, which opened in July 2013. Unfortunately, in October 2014, the owners were locked out of the building due to not paying finances. However, by the next month, K1 Speed, a larger chain of go-kart centers, had acquired the building and started operating the racetrack once again.
Here's a picture from 2007 (not mine):

A Google street view from 2011 after UE closed:

In this picture I took myself, you can see the building as it was when it was Fastrax:
http://i.imgur.com/ccBkR6C.jpg
Also, the CC that closed at Sangertown in New Hartford is still vacant, save for a seasonal Spirit Halloween store. The building has also been used twice that I know of as a showroom for Carbone Auto, a series of auto dealerships down the street. I have read however that there are plans to convert the building into a new wing of the mall, including two restaurants. (Buffalo Wild Wings, and possibly Red Robin, but still not confirmed .)

Something is moving into the old Circuit City in Elyria, OH, by the mall. I've seen a sign telling workers to enter in the back. I did drive by the other night, and saw that the checkout and Firedog signs are still hanging. I wonder what's moving in?

Also, Planet Fitness has taken over part of the old CC in North Olmsted, OH... FINALLY.

Gotta love it when old stores are turned into karting places. It's happened twice in the area: once in a former Swallen's, since demolished, and again in a former Roberds Grand, which is doing quite well.

This is me in front of a former North Dartmouth, Massachusetts location. Full signage remains with the old plug design and logo.  This picture is from December of 2019. I'm amazed that the location is in as decent condition as it is. I heard it has been used as a Spirit Halloween, but even still, usually, the labels are removed. A good piece of retail history still standing in southern MA if you want to snap a few pictures.
