There were two Woolworth's in Kingston. There was one downtown, which has now been sealed into two spaces(The back half still looking original). The other store, on Ulster Avenue, is now offices.

The one in Berlin CT suffered a terrible fatal fire in 1997. I remember going for lunch there when I was small, and taking rides to see the store when it was destroyed. It is now empty and still is and is used for parking trucks.

Hi
This is my friends I.D  However, my first job was at Woolco, I really loved that store, the Red Grill.  I started in the pet dept.and then became a full time cashier.  It had everything .  I miss that store.  Hey does anyone remember GRANTS?

Maybe those two Woolco's in the picture above were stores that they took over or moved into?  The reason I suggest this is that both signs appear to have extra spaces (the left one has one on each end, the right one you can see only one on the right end) - which leads you to think there might have been a store with a longer name there previously?

I thought of that too at first because i only had the pic with the one empty square.  Then i found the other with a blank square on both sides of the letters.  It's quite probably from another store but it may be part of that design.  I tried to find store names that could fit 8 spaces...

Another thing is that those pics have a 60's look.  I think most store chains built new buildings in new shopping centers at that period.  I don't think many stores closed and were taken over by other chains.... with the help of Wal-Mart being a small regional chain back then ! ;)

the pic of woolworth sign next to publics reminds me of time in my past .i first started inretail at G.C.MURPHY'S CO. in dundalk md. we had same sign letters on top of our store. but just as i left to go upto AMES. new shop center owners wanted uniform signs. so all those big letters went into basement store room. about 88. 90 i moved to toledo. ames sold murphy to McCORYS. When i went for visit in 2001, murphys gone. some store was in its place but door entrances had fancy walkways and gcmurphys logo was cemented into each doorway it was still there. dont know if letters are still in basement or not.

That picture is a Woolworth store. It was originally called "F.W. Woolworth Company", later shortened to "Woolworth", much like Sears was originally called "Sears, Roebuck and Company" and was later shortened to just "Sears".

Last time I was in a Woolworth's was in Jacksonville Illinois back in 1991.
That was a great little store located in the town square.  We had one here in Evansville that burned down in the early 1990's.

I know of four Woolcos in Michigan. Centerpointe Mall (then Eastbrook Mall) in Grand Rapids had one; later Burlington Coat and other stores, it's now Linens & Things and more stores. One in Flint is now Value City Furniture; another is now a vacant Crowley's (half of which was briefly Old Navy) and more mall space. (Courtland Center) Also, Meridian Mall in Okemos had one -- it was later split between Service Merchandise and a food court. Service Merch was then demo'd for a Jacobson's, and the food court relocated. Well, Jacobson's is now Younkers, and the old food court is now a bookstore.

Anyone know of other Michigan locations,  Woolworth or Woolco?

According to an article in the St. Petersburg Times I read a while back, there were 336 stores when they halted operations in the U.S. in 1983.  There were 120-some in Canada at the time of the Walmart takeover in 1994 or thereabouts.

Was anyone watching "Law & Order" on NBC on a Saturday night about 4 weeks ago?  The characters played by Dennis Farina and James Martin were walking and talking at a NYC corner during the scene when a truck pulled up and stopped in the background.  At the end of the scene, Farina and Martin walk out, leaving the camera focused on the truck for about 2 seconds before the scene ended.  On the truck was a white "W" on a red square with the word "Woolco" above it.  After further investigation, it apparently represents a food distribution company, far detached from the original Woolco:

Inside a former Woolco in march 2003.  The store is used a few months a year by an RV dealership as a huge indoor showroom !

The doors are still authentic Woolco.  It's a canadian Woolco of course.  I'm pretty sure all U.S. stores have been converted by now :yup:

What i meant was that this Woolco is still original because it was not replaced by another store after it closed.  :yup:

A new store would have repainted the walls, removed or covered the Woolco logos. To me it's the oldest closed store with that much original pieces about it's past :P

The Berlin, CT store, which was destroyed by fire, has been empty (literally; the building has been gone since 1999). The landlords of this shopping center probably don't care. My mom used to work in this plaza (Waldbaum's Foodmart which is now A&P Super Foodmart). They moved foodmart next to Woolworth's in 1996, and when Woolworth had the fire, an empty part of the new Foodmart building was damaged. After the poor destroyed Woolworth sat for two years untouched, they tore the building down (it was a really bad fire, maybe Arson, and the entire ceiling caved in.) They should of known that a torched building standing on what ever structure it had left would maybe collapse even more let it sit there. The empty spot doesn't even look nice. The walls look awful and they park ugly trucks there. In 2002, they re-did the facade of the older half of the plaza to make way for new stores. Ocean State Job Lot and Family Dollars anchor the older half. The movie theater next door to Woolworth was destroyed in 1997, and that whole strip is simply blocked with white boards. Berlin has no stores, and would benefit from new business.

Maybe, i think the competition was less strong up north too.  Woolco was the second largest disount department store chain behind Zellers and over Kmart.  With no Wal-Mart.    The stores were big and many were in great locations.  I remember they used the slogan: "Woolco, where the prices are just the beginning"

The Woolco in my area had a very interesting history. It started off life in the mid 60's as a Warwick Shopper's World which was a typical department store. It had a cafeteria and such. Across the street was a Zayre. Now in the 70's Zayre bought out the Warwick Shopper's World chain and converted all of them to Zayre. As you can guess they now had two Zayre across the street from one another. Woolco moved in around 77-78 I guess, hard to recall as I was rather young. I do remember the grand opening with all the bunting and my mother taking me into the mall to Brighams for coffee ice cream. Woolco closes and several months later reopens as a Channel Home Improvement. Gone is the mall entrance from the store. Channel shuts down and half the store is converted into a Marshall's while the other half sits vacant. It was weird looking at it at night, one half lit up and the other half dark. Eventually an Rx Place drugstore moves into the vacant part, a small section is converted for a hair dressing school. Rx Place closes and reopens as another discount drugstore but going inside one can tell not even half the floor space is in use. I doubt this one will last. Poking around in the backrooms though one can see old Woolco label scars on the door

A small summary about Woolco.

Woolco was a discount retail chain, founded in 1962, as a subsidiary of The F.W. Woolworth Company. Woolco stores were Woolworth's response to Kresge's Kmart stores. Kmart, Target, Meijer and Wal-Mart all opened their first stores in 1962.

In 1983 Woolco was closed in the United States. However, the Canadian division of approximately 140 stores remained open until 1994, when it was acquired by Wal-Mart. That company quickly converted most of the stores and became an immediate force on the Canadian retailing scene. To appeal to the sensitivities of the Canadian market, Wal-Mart replaced the recognizable star from its logo with a standard hyphen. The star has since been introduced to some Canadian stores.

Many locations contained Red Grille restaurants, and the food areas sold popcorn, real milkshakes, and other food.

I'm not sure, I don't live near there any more, but do get up that way every once and awhile. I think something is in there but not sure what. My wife reminded me that when that store closed, that we were there on the last day. They had a great "Welcome" rug just inside the door with the store logo on it. It was about 3ft by 5ft and was very cool! We tried to get them to sell it to us, but couldn't do it, not sure why they wouldn't sell it. Maybe one of the employees wanted it. That's when we got the store sign!!

An accounting error is the most stupidest way to go out. that is a big mistake and those people did that will have it on their concsions, with costing those people their jobs and downtown residents to have to drive to wal-mart or some other big box store

every town worth its size had a woolworth. their stores in the end were junky. it was hurting when stores were opening out of town to indoor or outdoor malls.

woolworth first closed ones in 1981, the ones in somersworth and lacona nh closed then. in 1993 (the stores closed january 1994) was a huge one w/ith closings. in nh then 1000 closed and 900 more closed the year before that,. the one in claremont nh was small and had a wooden floor. the one in lawrence mass was 5,400 squre foot store opened in 1890 something moved 30 years later.

again, an accounting error was the silliest way. woolworth may have gone out any way.

This pic is a shot of the Webster Square Plaza where Woolworths used to be (and I do mean used to). Ocean State and the Billiards was Waldbaum's Foodmart and a Cinema. The extreme right gap in the building was Woolworths of Berlin CT. The blocked off part was the original design of the building and was partially destroyed by the Woolworth's fire. The fire was in 1997 two months before Woolworth's closed. To the right is a nice A&P Super Foodmart that opened in 1996 that was also almost destroyed by the Woolworth's fire. To this day there is nothing but the old floor there. Trucks are parked there.

I emailed the town of Berlin for some old pics of the plaza and I have an article somewhere on the fire and how the store looked at that point. It was awful. The Woolworth sign said -OOL-ORT-. The W W H were burned off. The ceiling collapsed. There was debris all over the parking lot, all sorrounding areas were boarded up, and it remained there for about a year and was demolished in 1998. It was sad. I remember begging to ride by the store all the time. There was Woolworths in Bristol, but that closed in the Fall of 1997 and now is a nice Dollar Tree.

One other thing to point out on Webster Square Plaza... in 1996, a pet store had a bad fire at the other end of the plaza (called Pets For U) and many animals died in the fire. This plaza is really bad luck. However, the Woolworths fire was the last fire to hit the plaza. As a result of the Woolworths fire, the neighboring movie theater was destroyed and forced to shut down (soot was running down the movie screens and there was major flooding).

I just thought I'd share this story. I do miss Woolworths and the lunch counter!!

The second pic is Foodmart next store that survived the fire.

I remeber Woolco well  i was the last shopper at the indianapolis store on Shadeland ave and I70 it was $15.00 a cartload And I had the cart so full  you couldnt see over the top I was the final person rang up in that store and also on N keystone  it closed an hour after Shadeland
They played the woolco son
we want to be your favorite store
It was a huge store with a cafeaterea on one corner that became a chinese restaraunt the woolco became Housemart
then Hills   and then Central hardware all long gone
they recently tore down the old store
I remeber when it was housemart  a lot of old sinage was in there  hidden by false walls
Hills covered it up then central hardware tore out the false ceilings  and i seem to remember some old woolco signs being able to be seen
The woolworth at eastgate had a lot of stuff left  in a clearance area from woolco after it closed

It's my first day on this forum, and this is my first post.

These round air vent things in the ceiling are my first vivid memory of stores like Woolco, etc.  As a kid, I would frequent the Woolcos at Woodhaven Mall in Bucks County, PA (became a Jamesway, now a Home Depot - that's my pic a few pages back), and the Woolco (became a Clover, now a National Wholesale Liquidators) at Rising Sun and Adams Avenues in Philadelphia.

The Rising Sun Woolco was neat, as it had two entrances - one directly to the parking lot out front and the other to the strip mall that it anchored, along with an Acme, now a Chinese supermarket.

I also remember them, sometimes they were quite large and made a lot of noise.  Woolco, Zayre, Kmart and Bradlees often had them.   Here is one inside a former Woolco (now demolished)

They have those vents in my Kmart. When you're standing near them, the hugeness is creepy! Also, about that interior shot a few posts above, isn't it weird how some stores seem so much smaller when they're vacant?

Well it probably appears smaller because that's not the whole store. Half of it was remodeled into a Family Dollar. Also, Kings had round vents just like those in the interior Woolco pic above.

I have life-long memories of shopping at F.W. Woolworth stores as a kid and eating lunch at their infamous lunch counters in the summer.  For any of you out there that are under 20, try to imagine that the lunch counter would be the only place in town to get french fries since they weren't that big of a deal back then.  You could also get a made to order Coke with real cherry, lemon or chocolate added with the whole patented reverse seltzer water added to make the drink fizzy!

I'm not referring to that store. It's just weird when you look into it and it seems like it's smaller because it's completely empty. :dizzy:

Here I go showing my age again, but how many of you are surprised to find "air conditioned" on the front door handle of the older stores?  It seems so odd now, but it was a big deal back then to be able to find an air conditioned store to go to in the hot summer months.

Here's the former Woolworth in Schenectady NY on State St. (Route 5).

It's the building with the # 401 on it - now converted to office space (State, I think).

The first photo is a store on Market Street in downtown Wilmngton, Delaware - it was a Woolworth (they state that in the brochure), one of the larger ones (note that it has THREE sets of doors rather than the usual 2) and is now used as a museum of state history.

The second is a store in downtown Newark, Delaware - it may be a Woolworth or Newberry family store - not sure which - it still operates as a 5 and 10, though about 1/2 of the stuff is UofDelaware merchandise.

I have noticed the tj maxx / officemax plaza in brookfield Ct is called the woolco plaza and you could still tell it was a woolco. it was probably around 80,000 sq.ft. and closed late 1982 like all the U.S. ones did. Woolco could have made it.

here is what was the one in brookfield CT (near danbury line) on rt. 7.

Woolworth was located next to Bradlees in Bristol, CT. After they went out of business they divided the space into a Lecther's Kitchenwares Store (another chain that went under) and vacant space. Now there's Dress Barn, a vacant store and a Cardsmart that all share the old Woolworth Space.

Bristol also had a Woolco. It was located on Route 6 (Farmington Avenue). Later it became Rickel. Then the space was divided into Pergament and a Vacant Store. Now it's Sear's Hardware and a Salvation Army Thrift Store.

Actually it is related-

At Woolies we're proud to have served five generations of Britons since Frank Woolworth opened our first store in Liverpool on 5th November 1909.

But the story started 30 years earlier when Frank opened his first five and ten cent store at 70, North Queen Street, Lancaster, Pennsylvania, USA on 21st June 1879.

Woolworth had three simple ideas:

    * fixed prices of five and ten cents with everything clearly priced
*mass-produced, high quality items from the new factories
*buying direct from manufacturers to keep prices down

The first ever Woolworth store, in North Queen Street, Lancaster, Pennsylvania, USA. Manager J. D. Rock stands on the doorstep with his team
The first British Woolworths, in Church Street, Liverpool, Merseyside, pictured in 1909. (Image with sincere thanks to Mr Scott Oakford)

The formula quickly took hold with stores opening rapidly across the United States and Canada, each one more successful than the last.  Today Frank Woolworth is credited with transforming retailing across the world, bringing lower prices and better quality for everyone, and bringing many products into the price range of ordinary people for the first time..

Frank Woolworth launched the British company personally, choosing the sites for our first fifty or so stores, and establishing himself as Chairman of F. W. Woolworth & Co. Ltd. 3D and 6D Stores for a salary of £1 a year, to be paid in cash!

It was a good choice, the British company is still going strong 95 years later, and still carries his name.

P.S.- here's a pic of a few Woolworth bags I still have.

Here is one of two former Woolworth stores in Ogdensburg, NY.  This store was located at 206-210 Ford Street in Downtown Ogdensburg from 1937 until the building was purchased and the store closed in 1971.  Before 1937, Woolworth's was located further down the block.  The other Woolworth's store was a small one (15,000 sf) in the Seaway Shopping Center from 1959 until it closed in the 1970's.  The downtown store is mostly vacant now, except for the offices of the probation department.  The plaza store is now shared by a Family Dollar and a chinese buffet.

Okay.  Here is the pic I was talking about.  This Woolworth's store was in Downtown Ogdensburg, NY.  Located at 206-210 Ford Street, it was in this building from 1937 until the building was purchased in 1971 and the store closed.  Before 1937, Woolworth's was located further down the block in a smaller store.  We had a second Woolworth's in the Seaway Shopping Center from 1959 until it closed in the 1970's.  That store was about 15,000 square feet.  The downtown store is now mostly vacant, with just the probation department offices, I think.  The plaza store was split in half and is now shared by Family Dollar and a chinese buffet.

The Woolworth's that was in the Seaway Shopping Center closed sometime during the 1970's.  I'm not sure of the exact date.  After it closed, the store was split in half, with P&C Foods taking half and the other half occupied by a Sears Catalog store.  Then a few years ago, part of the old P&C was taken by Family Dollar and the old Sears was occupied by a chinese buffet.  Both Family Dollar and the buffet are still there today.  I will try and get a current pic posted here soon.:)

I have a partial article on the Woolworth's fire in Berlin CT in April, 1997. The front page had a picture of the store moments after the fire was put out. So, I pulled out the article and scanned the photo and would like to share it with everyone. Since the paper is 10 years old, and I had it folded away, this image isn't the best. (I am putting it in a WORD document due to its size).

As you can see the fire was horrible.. Of course, Woolworths never rebuilt because that was the same year all Woolworths closed anyway. The hole left by the store is still there. There is even tiles of flooring still sitting on the site. This was where I went as a young child, and to see it up in smoke is unfair and terribly sad.

The fire was so bad, that it nearly got to the brand new Super Foodmart that opened in November 1996. Today, Foodmart is still there, and there's Ocean State Job Lot, Family Dollar, and a few local establishments. It's across from Morande Ford and Showcase Cinemas.

FYI...If you would like to read the entire article on the fire, you can access it through ICONN Digital Library (iconn.org) ONLY if you have a library card number in Connecticut.

Mr. Know-it-All is wrong. I grew up in Bristol and live there until 2003. Dollar Tree is the old CVS, not the old Woolworths. Letcher's and a relocated, smaller Weathervane were among some of the stores that were in the old Woolworths. Today the old Woolworths is a Dressbarn, a store called Party Warehouse, and vacant space that most recently a gift shop called Card Smart.

Woolco had stores in Canada until 1994.  They were #2 behind Zellers and above Kmart.  Wal-Mart acquired the chain in a move to enter the canadian market.

For all you youngsters out there, the storefront that you see for the "Woolworth 5 and 10" was based on the original idea that everything in the store was priced between 5 and 10 cents.  (I know that seems unbelievable now, but it was a great concept at the time.)

When I was growing up in the 50's, everything like it was simply referred to as a "5 and 10 cent store" or a "5 and dime."  Once prices rose and times changed, most of the companies dropped the "5 and 10" part from their names and changed to adding the "mart" to give it the appearance of having more than just notions (sewing needs, household goods, clothes, etc.) and added on more and more items like TV's, games and electronic items.

Did everyone enjoy that walk down memory lane?

;)   ;)

Hi everyone,

I just discovered this site, so forgive me if there's already a photo of this somewhere here.  When I was taking pictures on East Main St. in Waterbury, Connecticut in 2002 this sign built into the sidewalk entrance to a building caught my eye and I photographed it.  The building was a nightclub, I believe, but it must've previously been a Woolworth's.  No, I didn't take any photos of the building, and it is now demolished.  The UConn-Waterbury campus now stands where this photo was taken.

By the way, the next doorway said ROBINSON on the sidewalk.  Was this also a former department store?

A small summary about Woolco.

Woolco was a discount retail chain, founded in 1962, as a subsidiary of The F.W. Woolworth Company. Woolco stores were Woolworth's response to Kresge's Kmart stores. Kmart, Target, Meijer and Wal-Mart all opened their first stores in 1962.

Meijer's first store opened as Meijer Thrifty Acres in 1934.

Wow! It's nice to know someone remembers the Berlin store. I wish I had been around longer to be able to really remember the store, but I at least had many chances to go there and have lunch at the lunch counter. It's a shame it burnt down.

I too go to Foodmart next door, as it's no secret I love that store. I still can't believe the owners of the plaza never rebuilt in the Woolworth's spot, and another part next to it is boarded up. I'll have to post pictures of the plaza that I have. Poor Foodmart has been sitting in the middle of a deteriorating plaza.

I worried because it didn't seem busy whenever I'd go, but I'm there at a slow time to begin with. No one, even myself, will ever know why I'm obsessed with the store, but that's the way it is. I wish the Newington store was still open, that's why I go to Berlin. Maybe it's because I went to the old Berlin store back when I was a kid and my mom was a cake decorator at the old store for 8 years. Every other store I went to as a child is closed, but the Berlin Foodmart is still around thankfully. I'm hoping it will never leave.

Anyway, I know this is for Woolworth's, but the connection is still there.

I live in Newington too and go there as well. I also went there as a kid.  I like their fish dept (Stop and shop closed up theirs) and they seem to run alot of good specials, especially lately.

This CVS in the Thruway Shopping Center in Greenwich (Riverside), CT was a run-down, rather disorganized Woolworth until around 1996.

Woolworth's had two stores in East Hartford, CT. On was in Downtown (A beauty school is there now) and the other (where I had snacks at the snack bar) was in the old Silver Lane Plaza. I heard there will be tearing the plaza down - I hate to say that I won't miss it - J.M. Field's (with its own snack bar), Stop & Shop (which moved) and Silver Lane Pharmacy (where I used to read MAD magazine and but my baseball cards) are all closed. The woolworth is a huge pet store now, but they are moving.

Here's a former Woolco/Jefferson Ward/Kmart now a Burlinton Coat Factory in Jacksonville. Next time I go I'll get better pics. Building style has stayed the same since the building was build, it has just been repainted.

I was told that this was originally the Auto Center belonging to the Bangor, ME Woolco:

It later became Rent-a-Wreck and has been closed for quite some time.

Re: the same location, I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on what these were used for?

Located on either side of the entrance to what is now Dollar Tree, I estimated them as definitely being older than the previous tenant (Ames) and possibly even the one before that (Rich's) which opened in the early 80s. So I am assuming they belonged to Woolco...anyone know anything about their purpose? (or if they are perhaps newer than I am estimating?)

Thanks!!

The garage doors probably were for the Woolco Auto Center.  Here's a picture of another former Woolco Auto Center, it may be a coincidence, but the remaining original door is the same as the one in Bangor.

For the speakers, i think that the current entrance (dark doors & windows) was added by Rich's which had this entrance layout at other stores and i assume that Woolco had another kind of entrance/doors.  So these were probably added when Rich's opened.

Ok, cool -- I knew they looked old, but Woolco went out of business when I was a toddler so I really couldn't have said one way or the other whether it was the original entrance or not. I don't think I ever went to another Rich's store besides the Bangor one.

Do you happen to know what the speakers were used for?

This is a picture from 1988 of Main Street in Keene, New Hampshire. It was posted on the Keene High School 20th reunion website. I moved to Keene in 1995 and the store was long gone, I've heard it went out in 1990 or 1991.

It's weird looking at this picture, I drive this street every day and this picture looks exactly as it does today except the Woolworths looks very out of place

The "5 & 10 Cent Store" picture from the first page of this thread, is exactly how I remember the Woolworths in Hanover, New Hampshire looking. It must have been one of the last operating Woolworth's, I definitely remember going there in late 2000 early 2001 and it still looked just like that. Realllly small store. I bought a hamster there once. Also the entire strip mall was just a cobblestone path you had to park hundreds of yards away to get to the plaza or ride a bike

I've seen that picture on the last page before. It was the Avalon Mall in St. John's, Newfoundland, and looks like was taken sometime in the 80s, possibly early 90s (remember, Woolco was still in Canada until 1994).

(For what it's worth, the Sobeys logo you see elsewhere in that pic was used from the mid-70s to late-80s, and Sobeys is usually good at updating its store designs.)

The Woolco was converted to a Wal-Mart in 1994, but Wal-Mart pulled out a few years later and it's now a Sears.

That would be amazing if there were a still-vacant Woolco. There is, however, a still-vacant Grant City in Clementon, NJ.

No, I just went there when it was abandoned. I wasn't even born until nearly a decade and a half after Grants went out of business.

By the way, it was also a Woolco afterwords, and then a flea market. It's been abandoned since maybe the early 1990's.

If you do a Google Book Search on the book ''Clementon'', you can see a picture of it when it was still open (as Grant City)! That's how I found out that the original tenant for the supermarket next door was Shop-Rite.

I have no pics, just the address: 1099 N. Church Street, Hazleton, PA 18202

Sorry but Live Search Maps (now called Bing Maps) doesn't recognize the address, or most addresses I try for that matter.

Here is the store we shopped at weekly when I was a kid:
This is in the Nylon Capital Shopping Center, Seaford, De. It stayed open until the bitter end. Nothing else has ever been in here...still vacant. They keep plastering newspaper on the windows, and it keeps falling down. We peered in recently and the floor was wet, not a good sign. The signage on the store was changed sometime in the 90s I guess-I preferred the old blue lettering that was there before. This was the store where I bought my first parakeet, among many, many other things! The shopping center and the Woolworths date from around 1960, maybe a little earlier. Here is the sign out front:
I'm not so sure the Woolworths part of it isn't still there, just turned inside out.

There was a store in downtown Cambridge, MD-I thought I had a pic but haven't found it yet. Also on the downtown plaza in Salisbury, MD, and inside Dover, Delaware's Blue Hen Mall.

That's a great photo shore72. The Woolworth's that we had locally were old school that tried to modernized. I do remember visiting a modern store in Maine, I want to say at the Maine Mall, but I'm not positive now. That location was good size, well lit and layed out.

The Acme was a peaked-roof store that later became a Meatland. (local chain) There is another strip of stores behind where the Woolworth was, built maybe in 70s or early 80s? I believe the original supermarket in there was an A&P, not sure if was there long enough to become a Super Fresh. (I don't remember it) Thriftway was in there for awhile and then Meatland/Food City moved there. The new store used the Food City name (unrelated, at least for the most part, to the southern Food City) Later it became a Fresh Pride. Everything back there is vacant now.

I liked shopping at the Meatland because of that open, airy feel thanks to the cathedral ceiling. You could still see the back of the Acme sign (just colors/patterns). It was extensively remodeled before Sav-a-Lot opened, and now has a "low" ceiling. There is also an old Safeway which has been subdivided, in the that same stretch of road.

I need to scan/post some more pics. I have some McCrorys (but not sure where to post them?) and will also get up a few Acmes.

Salisbury...hmmm. I thought I knew that town well, but that google streetview proves otherwise! I never knew about that shopping center. Off the beaten path. Next time I'm in town I'll have to ride down there. (edit: see my correction a few posts down)

Across town is the Twilley Center, a block off US 50 @ Civic (edited)  Avenue as I recall. This is right in front of the now gone Salisbury Mall. (there is a story for you!) That was anchored by an Acme & a Woolco; built in the 70s from what I have gathered. I don't remember the Woolco, but knew someone whose parents worked there. It was a Toys-R-Us for many years; I forget what is in there now. The Acme closed a few years ago. I don't know of there being a Roses anywhere in Salisbury, though. Unless it was in that streetview shopping center, too? Still can't believe I missed that!

Thinking about it, Dover, DE might have been the location, at the old Blue Hen Mall? I believe they did have a Roses at one end, and I do recall as a kid going to a Woolco around Dover but I could never remember where it was. Just north of the mall was a "peak roof" Acme, long closed now. To stay on topic, there was a Woolworths in the mall, which was a novelty to me because I was used to them being stand-alone. The sign on the front dated from the 60s, when that mall opened.

There is another mall in the area that is thriving, the "Centre at Salisbury". When I went to Salisbury on vacation, I noticed an abandoned Giant (Super G) that had also been a Super Fresh. Today on Google Maps I noticed a centennial A&P in downtown that is now a Hostess outlet.

In Dover, on the same trip, I noticed a peaked-roof Acme that is now a daycare center or something. There was also one in Smyrna. It relocated across the street into what looked like a former Food Fair/Pantry Pride. I think it might have also been a Super Saver for a short time. The Acme moved again to a store in the same plaza. Really close to the new store is a Roses that looks like a former 70's A&P/Super Fresh.

By the way, the Acme in Woodlyn was a peaked-roof store. It was a late one built in 1972, but relocated to the former Penn Fruit nearby. That store is now closed too. The store was subdivided into Save-a-Lot and "Dollarland", and was remodeled hiding the peaked roof. It got another new front when "Amelia's" opened in both halves.

patk: Yep, that's it!

Okay, with my decent net connection at home I figured out the deal with the Salisbury thing. The map at work made it look like it was off business 13 south but, yeah, I knew where Cypress was but forgot. Bad neighborhood. Correct, this is off of US 50 on the west side of town. I am really not sure what was in that now vacant end building. All through the 80s I only recall that place being one long line of empty stores. Every once in a while something would move in. Look to your left on that streetview and you will come to the Sav-a-lot. That is a pretty old supermarket that sat vacant for a l-o-n-g time. I first recall there being a flea market in there in the 80s; I think Meatland had a store there for a little while. I'd really like to know who was there first. It does kinda look like an Acme. I somehow missed that the Roses was in there. The store posted here is kinda hard to see from the highway, I really can't remember anything being there.

That was definitely a smaller peaked-roof Acme, likely older too. It could have relocated in the 70's. Have you ever been inside?

No, never have. I've never stepped foot anywhere in that shopping center that I recall. It's traditionally been a high-crime area and I think that kept the center from ever really taking off. The city built its new police station next door which has got to help. The Sav-a-lot is in the prime location, right next to the highway (though access is limited.) The guy who owns that store also owns 2 others, the peaked-roof Seaford location & a former IGA in Greensboro, MD.

To connect this to the thread topic, the Salisbury Woolworths was very close to here, less than a mile I guess. The building was demolished in recent years. (typical downtown, mult-story location)

Wow...I thought I'd never see this again...
This was the Woolworth in Lebanon, NH at the outdoor Lebanon Mall.
This area always kept a more "historic" feel than the downtown shopping district of West Lebanon.
The picture is from sometime in the 70s or 80s...but this is how it looked to the end...
I have no idea when it opened, but it definitely was open to the last day of the chain in the late 1990's.
This was the Woolworth I remember more than any of them, I used to get my haircut across the path every month with my Dad by a woman obsessed with the movie Forrest Gump. She was lively and animated and talked with everybody while she cut hair, and worked alone
We probably came here every weekend back in the 90's though, the best basketball court in the area was behind the Woolworth's
This entire "mall" was fully outdoors, you had to travel to the stores by foot with a parking lot at the start of the walkway.
This Woolworth had a front and back entrance, I can still picture the layout of the store..
This store was incredibly tiny, no bigger than a medium sized dollar store
They sold hamsters in the far left corner up to the end, there were books, clothes, but it was a really tight knit packed store
I have no idea what this mall looks like now, I haven't been to this area in a full decade now
Damn the time just flies....

On page 11 of this thread you can see photos of the Seaford, DE Woolworths that I posted. Today we were over there and while I was waiting for my wife I grabbed my camera and snapped some photos; I was very happy how they turned out. As I mentioned previously, they keep plastering the windows with paper but then the paper eventually falls down and they start again. No covering on there today. This has been vacant since the chain closed. Here is a wide view; the Harvest House restaurant was on the left:
The restaurant section, only accessible from inside the store. I remember eating here a couple times when I was pretty young, probably a hot roast beef sandwich. This closed a few years before the store did and was just used as storage, if anything:
A good view of the interior of the Harvest House:

Still has one piece of "artwork" on the wall:

And some general shots of the interior; this place seemed huge as a kid, not so much now! Those checkout counters sure look small and cheap:

It has been 50 years this year that the first Woolco store opened.  It also has been 30 years from when they closed.

Here's an active Woolworth in Newport, KY, shown in October 1993. Photo courtesy of the Kenton County Public Library. Fairly sure I know where this is, but I'll have to do a bit of "retail scouting" to make sure...

At a local library's used book sale, I happened to find a book published to commemorate Woolworth's 100th anniversary in 1979. Here are most of the photos from that time that were in the book.

Cool find from my parent's basement.  Authentic Woolcrest color markers purchased at Woolco most likely before the chain closed in Canada back in 1994.  They still work!

I had a very early memory about going to a department store with my mom in downtown Gloversville glad i found this thread I was trying to figure out where it was for the longest time...

Here are some pics from the local paper in return looks like my new town Schenectady had quite a history of retail
https://dailygazette.com/galleries/2015/07/10/capital-region-scrapbook-woolworths

Downtown Schenectady housed quite a few department stores in its day including
Sears
Barney's
Lerner Shops
Two Guys
WoolWorth

There was even a furniture store that experimented with becoming a Department store..

Woolworth is still alive in Mexico:

(I'm thinking the same thing will happen, when Kmart closes all their U.S., Guam and Puerto Rico stores. The Australian and New Zealand Kmart stores will still operate.)

You really did not see Woolworth or Woolco too much around Pittsburgh back in the day.
G.C. Murphy Co. pretty much had the local market locked-up on "5 and 10's".

Last one I recall being in was in Columbus, Ohio in the early 90's.

was a hockey puck.
