One thing I have a problem with O.S.J.L. is that they buy former stores carts AND TRY TO SCRIBBLE OVER OR PASTE THEIR NAME OVER THEM to try to claim it was always their carts AND TRY TO HIDE THE FACT THAT THERE WERE STORES THAT WENT OUT OF BUSINESS they don't want you to know there was Caldor,Ames,or Bradlees here before.

This comes along to me as cheap

WHY DON'T THEY UNCOVER THE NAME OF THE FORMER STORE ON THE WAGONS CHANGE THEIR NAME TO Ocean State Memory Lane Savings to make sure PEOPLE DON'T FORGET THESE AND BRING THEM BACK TO A SIMILAR FAMILARITY.

or they could just order their own custom carts but that wouldn't be as much fun!:duh:

They don't just scribble out the name, sometimes they permanently scar the carts for life by scraping the logos off and replacing the cart handles...  This is evident in pictures from former Ames turned Job Lots.

Remember Ames A+ logo? OSJL still has registers that have the A+ logo at the former Ames. Ive seen them at Jewett City and Old Saybrook. Both stores you can tell that OSJL did not take over the whole Ames salesfloor. Jewett City they installed a wall in the back and on left. They are renting the left space out to Tractor Supply Inc while they expanded the stock room to the back of the sales floor. Old Saybrook is really weird because they walled off a good portion of the store on the left side (most of which they dont even use as a stock room) and walled off a section on the right side.

These are starting to pop up like weeds. I only go in here for replacement tv remotes and packing tape. Like any type of overstock store, one has to come here frequently to find anything. Basic rule in OSJL, grab it now or give it up forever

Job Lots I know of

East Providence RI--this first started in the Gansett plaza in the former Adams Drugstore. Place was very crowded and merchandise often tumbled into the aisles. Yes I was a burial victim. Moved into Save-Rite (Service Merchandise type of store) which had originally been a Grants. Oddly enough when OSJL remodeled the store, they pretty much made it look as Grants once did. When I first went in, I actually looked for the lunch counter

Seekonk Mass--former Paperama. This is a better Job Lot in my opinion. Better choice of merchandise.

Lincoln RI--located in former Almacs Supermarket outparcel at Lincoln Mall

There used to be one in North Providence but I am unaware of what happened to it as the plaza it was in was demolished and totally rebuilt

Job Lots in Eastern CT

Willimantic - (Route 32/Willimantic Plaza near Route 6 Expressway) Former Shop Rite, one of the biggest and most organized and well-stocked stores I have been in. The whole shopping center went under a large renovation project in the late 90's. Also anchored by BJ's and Family Dollar

Jewett City - (Route 164 near I-395) Former Ames, a pretty well stocked store, one of the nicest in the area

Groton - (Route 1/Groton Shoppers Mall - a strip mall near I-95) Former TJ Maxx, whole shopping center recently renovated. Large Big Y took over a small Stop & Shop store and a very old Woolworths. Store is small but organized.

Ledyard - (Route 12/Riverside Mall) Former discount department store. Cleaner and more organized than it used to be. Tend to be quite busy much of the time. Also in shopping center with Val-U Supermarket.

Madison - (Route 1 near I-95) Former grocery store. Somewhat disorganized and dirty for a store in such a richy community. Has weird low ceilings in parts of store. Parts of store went under some type of renovation.

Old Saybrook - (Route 1 near I-95) Former Ames. Pretty nice store, quite organized and fairly well-stocked. Has helped nearby shopping center with more stores moving in

Brooklyn - (Route 6/Brooklyn Commons near I-395) Former fabric store. Small store, somewhat dirty. Next to a bowling alley and a Salvation Army Thrift Store.

Forgot to mention the Manchester one. They are located near I-384, the opposite end of town than the Buckland Hills Mall. They are in a shopping center near Pep Boys and a few small stores. There used to be a K-mart at the other end but it closed in one of the round of closings. Probably because Wal-Mart and Target at the other end of town hurt them since most people go out there to do their shopping than come to this end of town where there isnt a lot of shopping except Shop Rite.

OCean state job lot formed well before Ames went out. There are a lot of ocean state job lots in the Cape cod and rhode island and southeastern mass. they just replaced a lot of former ames and used the former ames as a way to expand more.

i'm not sure, but maybe OSJL could be the "unnamed retailer" that will replace yet another Ames in a small New England town.  Ames in Millinocket Maine.

"Andy Rosenthal, who manages the Ames property, said he expects to close a lease deal with a retail chain within the next month. He declined to identify the chain, but said it was a multistate retail outfit of 20 or more stores."

I have a picture of that ames in the ames section. the ames looked old and that would be the place for ocean state job lots.  but it is possible it is not ocean state job lots, we will have to wait and see. it said the property will be revitalized and the wal-mart in lincoln is 35 miles away.

They are the only store left in the now-vacant Bristol Centre Mall in Bristol, Connecticut. The refuse to leave and is suing the city of Bristol, which owns the mall. Their claim is that it was illegal for the city to come in and tell them their lease was null and void. I've spoken to many people - lawyers and non-lawywes alike and they say it's perfectly legal for a new landloard to make all the leases null and void and kick out all the tenants, provided they're given adequate notice, which the City of Bristol did. Meanwhile on Black Friday 2005 they opened their 2nd Bristol store in the former Super Stop & Shop Supermarket on Route 6.  It's bigger, nicer, and better organized than the mall store. I say it's time for them to get out of the mall.

All this bs with Job Lot is costing taxpayers money since the city owns the mall. Once the lawsuit is finished and Job Lot is gone, the city will tear down the mall and sell the property to private developers.

I agree. This location needs to go. That mall needs to go as well. North Main Street is undergoing a revitalization and it can't be done until they scrap what's ugly down there (the mall and that dingy supermarket next door). Do they really need two Job Lots a few miles apart from each other?

The Ocean State Job Lot in Berlin CT. A&P Super Foodmart anchors the plaza. Woolworth and Railroad Salvage was here, and now also has a Family Dollar, a cleaners, a chinese restaurant, and a fitness center.

The boarded up part with the oval "openings" is the old brick design the plaza had until the late 90s.

The opening in the building to the extreme right was where Woolworths was, but it burned down in 1997.

There is now a location in NY State - in Ballston Spa - an old Grand Union building.

They are planning a second location in Schenectady in the plaza on Watt Street (this has a former Ames/Caldor that is now a fitness center and Price Rite).  There are two possible spots - the old Price Chopper (which was PriceRite) at one end and the former Sears Hardware next to the Caldmes building at the opposite end - not sure which they are planning to use.

Job Lot of Meriden, Connecticut will be closing at the end of next week. According to the ad in the paper it's the final week 40% off.  They will reopen in a new location in November.  http://southingtonobserver.com/05_17_07/20.pdf

Just for the record Job Lot is located in the AMES Plaza (Meriden Parkade) and 2/3 of the Parkade is being torn down for a new plaza that will include a Lowe's among other things.

Ocean State isn't that bad. As I said before, OSJL took over the old Waldbaum's Foodmart in Berlin CT which moved down the plaza. If you are looking for some deals, OSJL is great to find them at. They too scribble the Ames logo off the carts, but just knowing I'm pushing an Ames cart is a good thing.

I even saw a Bradlees cart in this location. I wouldn't be surprised if most of these carts came from Newington. I may be wrong.

The plaza is run down though. The building was famous for fires in the mid 90s. Once Foodmart moved to its new store in 1996, the chaos began. First a pet store, and then Woolworth's which damaged a movie theater and a couple of other businesses.

Yes, I honestly enjoy seeing former stores convert to OSJL's, since they seem to be #1 in fixture recycling.  I know when I go to an OSJL I expect raw bargains, I expect the carts not to match, and the shelves to be out of order.  They are definitely reminiscent of how bargain stores like Big Lots used to be.

I can't believe they are finally closing the location, but I think it's for the best. The center of Bristol needs to be revitalized, it would look great! I pass by the mall every time I go to the dentist on N. Main Street, and wonder why OSJL would want to be the only tenant in a dead mall.

After reading a few articles, what I don't understand is why they do not want to keep the Farmington Avenue location, or so it seems. They still can remain in Bristol. That was a former Stop and Shop, why is it such a less desirable location for them. If they held on to the Mall location for this long, they can surely renew the lease on a location with a premier spot on Route 6. Marc, have you been to the Farmington Ave one? Why do you think they deem this location only 'temperary'?

From what I've been told and read, Federal Realty, which owns the Bristol Plaza does not want to renew Job Lot's lease on Farmington Ave. They call Job Lot a Problematic Tenant. Not sure why. Meanwhile as I was saying to Nick a few months ago, there was an article in the paper that Job Lot wanted to take over TJ MAXX's location in the plaza, which was news to TJ MAXX. Yes TJ MAXX's lease is up in a couple years (I believe they signed on 15 year lease in 93 or 94), but as far as I know they're renewing their lease.

I'll be there around Oct. 7 for the closure photos and soon *wait for it* the mall's demolition. Job Lot is currently leading the way to keeping Bristol back which is why this news that they lost in courts fills me with joy. They are the hurdle that kept the ugly mall from being destroyed and allowing the city to further its plans to improve the otherwise greatly improved North Main Street. They are also the tenant of one of the ugliest, old and oversized for their use husks on Farmington Avenue.

I can't wait to hear the developments on the other Job Lot on Farmington Ave. I'm not surprised they are called a problem tenant; they have a penchant for operating right out of the box of crummy old, underfixed-up locations and often refuse to keep their grounds cosmetically in order. I'll bet they've got infestations and the like, but that's speculative and probably not fair to Job Lot...

I've seen Bristol become a better city in just the past year and as a result, it might be good to expel Job Lot and hopefully get something more beneficial in its place like an electronics retailer (as much as I don't want to promote the big boxers) or, gasp, a *much* needed book store chain. Bristol Plaza, one of the city's most prominent plazas has really improved in past years and Job Lot sticks the plaza back by 35 years - that can't make the owners proud. Certainly, Job Lot fills the gap of lack of department retailers in the area and their prices are feasible for those on a budget but they, being the chain itself, won't spend a dime in making the place spiffier.

Either way, anything but another Dunkin' Donuts - (or better yet, the owner Giho should renovation some of his crummy old stores)!

Before I turn this into a Connecticut discussion forum...

As much as I agree with you that something better than Job Lot should set up shop in the Bristol Plaza, remember that spot sat empty 18-24 months before Job Lot took over the spot.

Here's an idea. Get rid of Dress Barn and Party Time. Move Dollar Tree over there. Move Century Buffet next to it. Get rid of Webster Bank, State Farm Insurance, and rip down the plaza to the right of The New Century Buffet and build a Target. Dress Barn goes into The Bristol Commons in the former KB TOYS next to Fashion Bug. State Farm Insurance moves to The Bristol Commons next to Price Chopper as does Party Time.

I just started working for this company. Seems like a good company.  They are very much likes Ames was about 10 years before we closed. Very casual, hand written signs. Crazy prices. Some of the things they do seems 'cheap', like the cart name changes, but they probably got a great deal on the carts...and it is thier carts.

They lobotomize the carts they inherent (mostly green, mostly formerly Ames)! That silliness aside (on my part), I got scolded by my manager the other day for making an "unauthorized" sign on a sale that was otherwise permitted by the company. The sale was alright I suppose. The sign? No. Well so much for establishing character in the smallest degree... it's one thing these giant corporate entities have managed to delute and often why they're hated; uniformity and decimation of what gives individual business a soul.

I asked someone in there what happened and they told me their lease was up. I had heard rumors that WalMart was trying to get a store in the area but can't imagine if they are taking the OSJL slot, they'd have to bulldoze a hell of a lot of the plaza. I've checked with local newspapers and no one knows for sure. Newport avenue, though a busy street can not handle WalMart traffic since Gansett plaza is in a pretty built up residential area. Time will tell I guess

I officially received confirmation that the "new" Farmington Avenue Store in Bristol, CT will be closing at the end of January 2008. My mom went there yesterday and says there are "Store Closing" signs up all over the place. She asked an employee and was told they hope to open a store elsewhere in Bristol by Christmas 08.

I hope to be in the area within the next couple weeks and I hope to get some pictures.

All I have to say is wow. From 2 stores in Bristol at the beginning of 2007 to none by February 2008.

The store looks nice inside, but that's probably because it was Stop and Shop. That's surprising to see that OSJL didn't want to keep this location. This is a great plaza, roadway and space to locate a business. I've been to this plaza and visited the old Stop and Shop and the new one, and have been to the chinese buffet, Dollar Tree and also to Bradlees and Woolworth when they were open. Route 6 is a great location. I hope some other store moves in fast.

I like this one better than the one in Southington, which is where I live. A couple of my Southington friends like this one better too.

QuoteThat's surprising to see that OSJL didn't want to keep this location.

The landlord didn't want to renew OSJL's lease. They referred to them as a "Problematic Tenant". They claim ever since OSJL moved in there's been a rat problem in the plaza.

The Chinese Buffet is awesome. In fact that's the whole reason I went to the plaza Sunday night. My best friend treated me for my XMAS Gift. My best friend and I hope that BEST BUY will open there. I also hope Border's will move in.

Agreed! My grandparents treated us to the buffet a few times although my family usually goes to the Plainville Imperial Buffet.

The OSJL spot is not big enough for a Target? That's a great store and it would do very well on Farmington Ave. One thing that should be done is they could expand the building in to that little side parking lot that I remember from when S&S was there. Is there two Webster Banks in the plaza? I thought I saw a second one next to Ocean State.

Once again, you are lucky to be near such a great shopping area. Route 6 is one step up from the Berlin Turnpike. Wow, having Stop and Shop, Shop Rite, Shaw's and Price Chopper on one street, that's insane! I love that Stop and Shop in Bristol. The Berlin S&S is similar to that one.

And Marc, I said it before and I'll say it again, the Southington Price Chopper is fabulous! You're lucky to work there. The Newington store pales in comparison. Southington's donut display is impressive.

Imperial is nice, but it's pricey. Plus they serve your beverage in small little glasses so they need to be refilled constantly.

I was wondering myself if they could expand the building to take over that side parking lot. Target wanted to build on The Avenue next to BIG LOTS, but they would've need to buy 2 acres of park land from the city and then replace that 2 acres. So that deal died.

QuoteIs there two Webster Banks in the plaza?

Not exactly. Next to Job Lot is the bank. The other "Webster Bank" is the drive-thru window.

The one in Bristol is horrible. My best friend and I were absolutely appalled with how dirty, gross, and disgusting it was. Every table in the food court was dirty. The bathroom was dirty. The Soda Fountain was dirty.  And the donuts didn't look too appealing.

Here's what I know (or think I know) of this Ocean State site. There was a local hardware company in "downtown" Collinsville on the river across from the Post Office. They were the Minor Lumber Co. At some point business was so good for them they decided to expand, bought and built up the spot just off Rt 202/Rt44. They way overplayed their hand as some Home Depots and then Blowes showed up in nearby towns, Minors was toast. The current Ocean State building was Minor Lumbers main store building but they lasted only a few years there. The building was vacant for several years until Ocean State showed up.  Whats left of Minors is still there behind Ocean State.

I knew about the TJ Maxx building, and I hope OSJL invests in their new Bristol location. Give the building they acquire a nice design. If they re-opened Meriden with a fancy look, they should do it with Bristol, especially with its reputation in Bristol, bad and good.

I was driving along Lakewood Road in Waterbury today when suddenly I
see an unexpected Ocean State Job Lot sign.  It seems they are turning the former Roller Magic skating rink, along with adjacent stores such as Fascia's Chocolates into an Ocean State Job Lot.  You can still see the "SKATING" labelscar underneath the sign on one side of the building.

I read before that this OSJL will replace the one down the road on Chase Ave.  The one on Chase Ave. will become some new "concept outlet."  Article at http://64.233.169.104/search?q=cache:c0I-OYIqY2gJ:rep-am.com/articles/2008/07/18/news/349080.txt+ocean+state+job+lot+waterbury+rep-am.com&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=1&gl=us&client=firefox-a.

That's a sharp looking Job Lot! It's amazing how they managed to get back in to Bristol. They were lucky. After fighting for the mall store to remain open, instead they ended up with a better deal. They already have a new facade made for them, and I'm sure they'll use TJ Maxx's fixtures/general appearance.

Went to the new Job Lot in Bristol today. I like it. :-) It's very spacious, not cramped like the one on Queen Street in Southington. Since it is the old TJ MAXX the layout is unusual. They have 9 registers. And most were open. And it looks like they now have computer screens at the registers.

It's intersting to see that the giant round heater vents from the Zayre days are now very noticeable while shopping in the store. Probably because of the lower shelving units being used and lack of department/visual graphics hanging from the ceiling.

Correct on both counts; it's diagonally across from The Center for Shopping (which currently has a lot of vacancies, by the way.)

The Center for Shopping was where Ames had their 'new' store (the old Ames was in downtown Sanford that became Marsden, IIRC) and Shaw's. Across the street was Walmart, so did they move? just down 109 was the Weathervane Restaurant.

I think I'm correct...

A roundabout? Jeez, The Center for Shopping was where Shaw's and Ames were at. The Old Ames in Sanford was a Marsden. Is the new Walmart where the manufactured Home place was?? In downtown Sanford was an old Jerry Lewis Theater and there was a Deering Ice Cream shop (like a friendly's).

In addition to the new Poughkeepsie store (which is mentioned in the Grand Union post, as it is a built but never opened Grand Union Mega Save, their last concept before their bankruptcy), looking at the current flier I see this:

Now Open: N. Babylon (as mentioned above) & NORTH ADAMS, MA., 830 Curran Memorial Highway.

This North Adams store is their first in the Western (Berkshires) part of MA, which makes sense as they have lots of stores in MA as far east as the Springfield area and now a good string along Eastern NY (Ballston Spa south to Fishkill), so the Berkshire area would be a logical area to fill in between.

Based on the address, it looks like it is a (now former) WalMart store, which was built in the early 90's on the site of a drive in theater.  Apparently the Walmart has relocated a bit further South (1415 Curran Hwy), which (I think) is probably the site of a former plaza that had a Price Chopper and other stores (not sure what, as most of it was empty for years even before the PC left).

Ocean State Job Lot purchased the rundown decrepit and long neglected Webster Square Plaza in Berlin, Connecticut where their store is located in a former Foodmart for $3.3 Million in early December 2013. Now it looks like they're going to be taking over the former vacant 60,000 A&P Super Foodmart.

"F" is Job Lot's current location in the plaza and it's shown here as vacant. "K" is the former A&P Super Foodmart, which is shown as Job Lot's location.

60,000 square feet is huge for a Job Lot store and nearly 3 times their existing store in the plaza!

Yeah, I think they'll buy from anyone who wants to get rid of something :)

My "famous" example (which is probably somewhere back in the 7 pages of this post) is one past summer where they had an aisle set up for cook outs.  Seemed like every item there (like plates, cups, silverware, condiments etc.) was from a different chain, mostly grocery stores, all over the country, including a couple fairly local (for example, I think that was when S&S was changing logos, so they had something with their old logo).

I see they are continuing their NY state tradition of choosing former/future supermarkets for their stores (one or two aren't, but they have an old Price Chopper, A&P Future store, part of an Albany Public space, a couple former Grand Unions, a Finast and one future Grand Union (plus this Pathmark) among the 10 stores in the state (and one former Joy Store/toy store as well)).

Also checking the store locator, I see 3 NJ stores - those have to be fairly new as well?

Ocean State Job Lot - Windsor, Connecticut (formerly Grant's / Kmart)

Originally built as Grant's in 1968, converted to Kmart after bankruptcy in 1976, became the current OSJL shortly after Kmart moved out of its current location in 1995 to the bigger store in town (closed in 2003, now Target).

Any resemblance to the older layout from Grants or Kmart? If so, tell us what you think!

This was a Shaw’s for a very short time. The biggest problem was, this store was originally planned to be placed closer to the road, but Stop & Shop had something to do with fighting that somehow. Shaw’s decided to build anyway, and if you aren’t familiar with this area, the store is down in a hole. You can barely see the top of the roof from the road. Terrible location.
Big Y thought they could make it work, but that store struggled for the entire time it was open.
OSJL seems to be doing ok there, but it’s a big building, they didn’t take the whole thing, just about 3/4 of it. The other 1/4 has been for lease since Big Y left.

I swear, Ocean State Job Lot will re-use just about ANY retailer's carts! They're quite selective on which ones get maimed (A.K.A. original retailer's logo getting scratched out) and which ones still have intact logos. See some examples here:

The OSJL In Griswold CT recently got a fleet of the old, frickin stuffty, previous generation WalMart cart. The ones where all the wheels thunk and are bent from cars hitting them. Those were the worst when WalMart had them, hard to believe they survived the scrap yard.

I swear, they're worse than Ollie's when it comes to the carts they get! I'm surprised they haven't managed to get a hold of any plastic Kmart carts! And I take it the WalMart carts are metal?

This would be an easy fit. They just did that at the former Rochester NH Kmart.

I would have thought that they would have picked up the former Kmart in Waterville too. Augusta and Auburn already have a Big Lots so Waterville could have been a target for OSJL.

It is speculated that Job Lot will be opening in the former Kmart in Vernon (295 Hartford Turnpike). The Manchester Scoop, a local blog about business news in the Manchester area, says that work is being done inside the building and that a lease had been recently signed. At least they will probably not change a whole lot about the appearance of the building. Just an interior refresh.

I'm sure it will feel like walking back in to Kmart. They will probably keep the original canopy like the one in Torrington and change the doors.

The OSJL in Manchester is in a old First National/Edwards. Last time I was there (15 years ago) it looked like it was Edwards.

Here's the link of that vacant Kmart being filled by a new tenant (didn't claim if OSJL would be going into that site but I believe that is real it may become an OSJL here):

My guess is that it will be Ollies, they usually only take 1/2 of their spaces.

Given the size listed (80,000 Square Feet), it would be interesting if they could get both to take halves and split the space!

Not sure I've seen it happen anywhere (yet), but with these types of stores it could actually make sense - while they are technically competing stores, since much of their merchandise comes from buy outs and closeouts, they will more often than not have different things to offer.  So, by having two side by side you would draw customers from a larger area, figuring it makes sense to go there and if one store doesn't have what they are looking for, the other might.

I have 2 Job Lots close to me, but will make a plan to visit the new Vernon one later this year the same time I visit the new ShopRite. Was supposed to visit SR this month, but of course that fell through. With OSJL taking half of Kmart, I wonder what the other half will become later on?

i'm admittedly not a huge fan of OSJL.. their prices aren't very good for being a supposed closeout store

Ocean State Job Lot - Vernon, Connecticut
This store opened August 27, 2020. It is situated inside the former Kmart building in Vernon, Connecticut. It is across the street from the Super Stop & Shop.
This OSJL just took over 1/3 of its space leftover by what was once America's favorite store back in the 1970s-80s. The other 2/3 remains vacant and no tenants have taken over yet.
The nostalgic artifacts of Kmart remain in place at the new OSJL, apparently the other 2/3 of that space have been walled off.
Many of the local shoppers in town were excited with their delight to check out the brand new store. They were very pleased what they had to offer like all other OSJLs all over.
For those of you who don't know well (outside the Northeast), Ocean State Job Lot (abbreviated OSJL) is the closeout / discount store that is found all across the Northeast (expanding as further as Pennsylvania).
On the other hand, when Kmart was located in that very building, it was open for over 44 years. Kmart closed down more than a year and a half ago (closed March 3, 2019). Kmart originally opened on February 27, 1975.
That building was vacant for over a year when OSJL announced that they would be taking over that very building. The news were confirmed in late March of 2020. Starting in April, they started work on the building. Over time, they dismantled most, if not all of the building + other exterior signs (BIG Kmart logo, complete Kmart awning & road signs). The doors leftover by Kmart remain intact. These Kmart artifacts all remained post-closing.
It took almost no time to complete the partial transformation of the building itself. The interior at the new OSJL doesn't have much to be described about the former Kmart self however, it still looks a little Kmart-ish. The Kmart air vents remain in place, so as well the ceiling. They also kept many of the carts leftover by Kmart.

I heard that some changes have happened with the shopping carts at the Valatie and Albany stores (namely a set of GU carts [possibly some 1995 Tote Carts] ended up at the latter and a uniform fleet at the former.

Correct on both counts - the Valatie ones are definitely more uniform (there may still be two slightly different types as some seem a bit smaller than others, but they look mostly the same) and the GU carts at the Albany store are some of the ones that used to be here in Valatie (and were original to that store since it was a GU and used those larger, flatter green carts as it had the green/yellow decor that was far less common, given the overall small number of new stores that GU opened in the later 1990's).

Not quite sure why they'd send those to the Albany location, given how small that store is - would have made far more sense for them to get the rest of the carts that were of the deep/narrow type that used to be here (various colors plastic, some of which were likely from Ames and other similar stores) - I can see them getting older ones as they are in an area where carts are probably more likely to be taken from the store and not returned, so perhaps that isn't as likely to happen if the carts are old and not in the best shape.

What kind of carts did Valatie get? I've been documenting the various carts that have come and gone for the past six years at various locations in the Capital Region, and I have plenty of pictures over here:

I'd say some version(s) of the Walmart metal ones - as I saw them, there was a variation with the blue vs. grey seats.  Just about all looked to be the same size after all, maybe 2 or so that were a little smaller (could be a couple that they kept from their prior mix & match of carts as well).

The green GU you show in the Schenectady batch is definitely what the ones that wound up in Albany are, and I'd suspect that they all came from Valatie originally (as GU had a fairly large spot for carts given the size of the store and being the only store in town).  Might even be some that made it to other stores as well.

Also given that this GU closed well after the chain as a whole (only when Hannaford opened in town), much of the store fixtures were left intact (not sold like they were with the stores closed in bankruptcy), so they probably got some of the existing shelving in the store as part of the location as well (obviously had to add racks for clothing, given that GU didn't sell that, and not sure what happened to stuff like freezers, coolers, produce etc.).

Most likely have both the M90 and possibly some M95s, assuming the smaller carts were not the plastic PC-20s from the previous fleet.

I think what actually happened with the GU Tote Carts when the Valatie store closed is that half of them stayed and carried over to OSJL and the other half ended up at the True Value down the road, as there are pictures showing that store with those carts.

That seems possible - not that I've never been in Mario's (the True Value you mention), just usually grabbing an item or two and not even looking to see what kind of carts they may have.

Though that would be quite appropriate, given that the main part of that True Value store (the center where you come in) IS the original Grand Union in town (before they moved to the left part of the plaza that is now medical offices, then the final store that is now OSJL - the small shops in the middle were added to "connect" the old building with the new one when that was built in the 1990's).

They also have a second spot a bit further south (where 9H crosses over 9 between the villages of Valatie & Kinderhook) that is a building materials center, so possibly they would use a few there as well to move stuff around (thinking of things like 5 gallon buckets of stuff or similar).

I made an Ocean State Job Lot store locations list (a list of every Job Lot store that I could find, even ones that have closed):

For the NY stores, here's what I know:

- Albany was last an A.J. Wright (not sure what it was originally; A.J. Wright only opened in 2008)
- Ballston Spa store opened December 4, 2006 (first in NY).
- Clifton Park was said to have been a Joy Discount Store
- Schenectady was a combined space, last occupied by Eckerd (left) and PriceRite (right). Both of these spaces were originally Fay's Drug and Price Chopper.

Also that one in Rutland, VT appears to originally have been a Shop 'n Save that was rebannered to Hannaford before they moved down the road to the former Stop & Shop.

Quote from: Retail Regents on April 08, 2022, 03:05:45 PMI heard that some changes have happened with the shopping carts at the Valatie and Albany stores (namely a set of GU carts [possibly some 1995 Tote Carts] ended up at the latter and a uniform fleet at the former.

I've been documenting the various carts that have come and gone for the past six years at various locations in the Capital Region, and I have plenty of pictures over here:

https://rrcarts.blogspot.com/2020/03/vultures-worst-of-ocean-state-job-lot.html (https://rrcarts.blogspot.com/2020/03/vultures-worst-of-ocean-state-job-lot.html)

That must have been a while back, as I didn't see any of the Grand Union carts at the Albany store when I went there this morning. All I saw were the ex-Walmart, Meijer, Walt's Food Center, and an ex-Stop & Shop cart.

They were there sometime in the past couple months (Feb or Mar), not inside the store just chained up out in front on the sidewalk.
Perhaps either someone realized they weren't useful there (being a smaller store with less room for those bigger carts), or of course being in Albany it's also possible someone came in overnight and cut the chain and took them for their own use!

If anything, pretty much all of Albany's carts are backwash from other stores. More likely they'll end up somewhere else months if not years later.

Though I would take Clifton Park with a grain of salt as there is pretty much no information on the shopping center that store is in. It is only suspected, so leave that with a question mark.

Job Lot is moving their store in Enfield to 95 Elm St. Where the Best Buy was.

The location is still on the Best Buy website however all of the hours on all days are listed as closed.

"Monday: closed
Tuesday: closed" etc.

To add:

Clifton Park - That building was definitely a Joy Store (and their Toys for Joy) as well.  This was the third actual Joy store (in addition to the original in Glens Falls and the one in Rensselaer) - they had a bunch of the Toys locations as well, but only those three had both.

I can't say for sure which part of the building was which, but it is some part of the Joy brands site.

The building was also a Boat and RV sales for a time in between, along with several smaller things like a night club and a church in parts of it at some points.

Albany - That was previously Fashion Bug, and if you want to go way back it was part of a Grand Union (after they took over the stores that Albany Public owned, this one was known as Scot's Lo-Cost a warehouse format).
The "back" leg of Westgate plaza sat farther forward than the current PC/Dollar Tree do (as it contained several larger stores - the grocery store, a Woolworth and a JC Penney at one time, later divided into Wheels Auto and Paper Cutter).
The GU/Scot's was in that corner, so the front of their store would have come at least as far out as where Ocean State is now, possibly a bit farther towards Central.

Troy - Was also an AJ Wright for a time before TJ Maxx (when they got rid of the AJ brand) and was originally a Price Chopper (Bradlees used to face it in what is now the parking lot of the current PC/Market 32).

North Adams, MA - Before Walmart was there, the site was a long time drive in theater - when they do their fall parade, the groups used to line up there.  Walmart took over somewhere around 1993.

I went to a Job Lot store recently and realized that they got new carts, new *original* carts. No re-branded ones, No WAL*MART ones with a Job Lot sticker covering the old logo. New originally manufactured carts, specially made for Ocean State Job Lot.

Did any other stores get these?

Is this the end of Job Lot re-using other peoples shopping carts?

Can't say I've seen any - perhaps they just needed some and couldn't find any used ones to buy?

Unless they are now like cars, where the used ones cost as much as the new, so why buy used? ;)

Those Peggs KNM550 shopping carts seem to be the new standard, just like Ollie's. I am aware that certain newly-opened stores in PA use them. Since none of our stores are new, we don't have them around here.

Here's my local Ocean State Job Lot. This was previously an Almacs Supermarket and it currently uses former Kmart carts (And no, they don't use the new original carts seen in a previous posts). They opened in around 2006.

Here's when it was an Almacs Supermarkets:

I assume you meant Joy? ;) - I don't know for certain, but it does make sense, given that other Barkers wound up becoming King's, and then some became Ames.

Noting that King's filed for bankruptcy in 1982, and then stores sold to Ames in 1984, the time seems right (for some reason I remember hearing or seeing that 1982 was when they opened that third "regular" store Joy's but could be anywhere in that frame).

So, perhaps either they were willing to sell off stores if there was interest when in or trying to avoid bankruptcy, or it was a later switch and Ames was not interested in the spot for some reason (as they also didn't take the one "original" King's in the area that I know of, which was on Central Ave. in Albany, later for many years the OTB Teletheater before being torn down when the ShopRite was built a few years back)?
