Yeah, Quizno's is much much better.  Subway strikes me as the 'fast-food' of the sub chains.

If you notice, most subways have recently been upgraded in terms of appearance. The franchise recently got rid of the famous subway wall paper and replaced it with something a little more current. They have a new image now, since they've become quite the popular place to eat in today's society.

Ours have not. They still have the same look as when they opened in the 80s. Also the manager at one of them was nutty. I still eat there about once a year. Also they have several critical health code violations.

The singing rats in that Quizno's commericals were called spongemonkeys.

Subways is great.  I wonder how Jerrod lost all that weight?  I can't be from the Subway subs.  In the bringer of bad news, Subway is discontinuing its Sub Club promotion due to fraud.

Subways are ridiculous, they are becoming the Dunkin Donuts of the fast food world.  I know around here, if your town doesn't have at least two Subways in it, it's probably not on the map...

The long story about our Subway:  Subway opened in a town located at a half hour drive from our city wich is bigger.  People often made the trip and we always saw somebody we knew from our town there...!

Finally Subway opened in our town.  A few months after the opening, the building was destroyed after a huge fire.  So for several months, we were without a Subway.  It later re-opened.  Today, we have two Subway and a Quizno's...  so we're on the map

This Subway is in Cooperstown on Route 28, just outside the southern end of the village proper.  It is a rather unusual looking building and sign, probably was something else prior to this.

Bristol, Connecticut has 5 Subways!!!!! Population = 62,000.

Route 6 Across the Street from ShopRite Supermarket.

Route 6 inside Walmart. Walking distance from Shoprite.

Route 6 next to Blockbuster.

Main Street near the Dead Mall.

Route 229 down the street from ESPN.

Southington has 4.

Route 10 Across the Street from Shaw's.

Route 10 next to Ethan Allen.

Inside Walmart which is across the street from Ethan Allen.

Route 322 in the Plantsville section of Southington.

The one in the tiny town of Plainville moved from a tiny little building in downtown next to the Railroad Tracks to Route 10 near Woodford Avenue. They share space with a Tobacco Store.

The "toasted" subs aren't that great. I had one at the one across from the Southington Shaws.  The meat was still cold. The cheese was barely melted and the bread was soggy.

I love your knowledge of Central Connecticut, Marc. That Subway has been there since the later 90s. The [indian] owners keep that store running very well even if they charge $.59 for soda refills (which is rare for any franchise Subway store to charge for refills). That Tobacco store used to be a bank, then when Subway moved in it became a Whole Donut. They're now a (presumably) family owned Tobacco/convenience store.

Where I live, we have....

One near my house
One in the mall
One in this kind of new plaza
One downtown
One in a gas station
A new one in a gas station... and they did a pretty half ass job of it. I applied at that Gas Station in the past, before they got a subway - no resturant work for me, F!!! it. But they never hired anyone, despite needing workers like mad and they just piled up in the back.

I hope that's it... There may be more. We don't have that many McDonalds, or Burger King's, but we have three Wendy's... wtf?

My friend Jeff and I went to the Meriden Square Mall oh about a 6 or 8 weeks ago. He got dinner at Subway that night.  It took them like 15 minutes to make his sandwich, which should've taken maybe 5 at the most. Plus he said the sandwich wasn't that great. He said the people at the Price Chopper we work at make better sandwiches. I haven't eaten at Subway in quite a while. Probably not since August 06 when I applied to work at one (which I didn't get hired at).

The whole problem with Subway is the way they franchise.  Doctors Associates Inc, the company who owns the trademark, loves authorizing new franchises because it means more cashflow in royalties.  In fact you can look in just about any newspaper and find well-placed ads for Subway brain-washing seminars.  The problem is this is saturating the markets in practically every region, mostly here in the northeast.

The initial franchise fee is very small and virtually no startup money is needed besides what is needed to open the restaurant itself, whereas most other franchises, ex. Taco Bell and Dunkin Donuts require you to prove you have up to 1 million in free cash.  This is bringing in many normal people who want to "upgrade" their mom and pop businesses and gain the security and brand of a franchise.

The fact that it is relatively cheap to open a Subway, and the DAI consultants tantalizing prospective franchisees with beefed up sales forecasts, is why you see four and five of them in small towns.  And, unless they all happen to be owned by the same person, they are all generally competing against each other.

DAI actually has a 2010 Master Plan as well, and are far ahead of schedule with that.  At one point they even claimed there was a new Subway opening every 48 hours worldwide.

You might not want to talk smack about your employer online... I shared a rant with a friend, who worked at another Burger King... and they found out.

At the time, I was no longer employed, but it all settled down within a few days.

Don't mean to divert the attention off-topic but do they really care that much? You can speak your mind outside their time(clock). And if you're not working for them anymore, then so bigger what? Besides, you can just find another job... most of these places thrive on people they can just scare into being "fired". What they need is to simply get off their high horse; you can get paid minimum anywhere else... heck... across the street. Humph...

Every Subway is independantly owned and operated, so I'm employed by the owners of the store, not the company.  It's been a year and a half and they can't even break even, so their thoughts about DAI and SFAFT are similar to mine.  They fail to mention to you that their own stats show most Subway franchises don't see a profit unless they are across the street from a college or office park, or multiple units are owned.

My friend Andy (who used to work at the one inside the Walmart in Southington) is the manager of this store. He gave me permission to take pictures of the store. I couldn't however because the Chinese guy that owns the nail salon/spa next door threaten to call the cops on me if I didn't leave his property. (Yeah his property. He doesn't own the plaza. The plaza is owned by Carpenter Realty). He also yelled at me for parking in front of his salon to go to Subway. I told him to shut the eff up before I call the Immigration and Naturalization Service on him. (It's a shared parking lot. The salon is in the next store front over from Subway).

Subway is opening another new restaurant in Southington, Connecticut. This one is downtown at 1 North Main Street where a local pottery shop called "The Auracle" used to be located. That's on top of a new one that opened on Meriden-Waterbury Road in the Milldale section of Southington last year. Not sure who owns the one on MW Road, but the new one downtown will be owned by Terrance McMorrow, who owns around 3 dozen Subways in CT. The downtown one is across the street from a closed Quizno's.

Does Subway have rules about what radio station gets played at their restaurants? I've been to several in both Southington and Bristol Connecticut (some co-owned and others not) and they all have 105.9 The River playing. They're what's known as a Variety Hits radio station. http://www.theriver1059.com/

Do Subway's in other areas all play the same radio station? (I don't mean do they all play The River, I mean do they all play the same local station?)

I went to Subway at 1197 Farmington Ave in Bristol, CT yesterday (which is right by the Hobby Lobby I work at) and while waiting to order my sandwich another Subway employee walked in and the young lady behind the counter making sandwiches informed her co-worker that Subway was no longer doing $5 Foot-Longs.  The other employee sighed heavily and commented how the customers would be yelling at them even though they don't control the prices. The remaining $5 Foot-longs are now $5.25

It looks like the $5 Footlongs have given way to the Simple $6 Menu, which is good news for me, because - until they change their minds - my 6" Meatball Marinara combo will finally be a flat $6 across the board, instead of $6 at one Subway and almost $8 at another one.

The 5 dollar foot long has been gone for a few months now, I noticed it a while ago.

I been looking at other sub places like Pot Belly, Get It Toasted, and Dibellas when I go to Newington.

Inside the Subway inside the Southington Walmart. Pic taken 10/22/08.

This location is now closed. Sign is down and the whole area is cover with a plastic tarp. Talked to a Walmart friend of mine who told me the Subway was under-performing and that the owner shut down another one in Waterbury, CT. (Maybe it was the one inside Walmart too?)

Subway has dropped Jared Fogel as their spokesman after 15 years. The FBI raided his house in Indiana on Tuesday. Many speculated that this was a follow up investigation after some one from Jared's foundation was arrested in April for manufacturing Child Porn. Now a Florida woman has come forward and claimed she's the one who tipped off the FBI claiming Fogel told her he's attracted to underage girls! Fogel's lawyers no doubt dispute this claim.

Subway Corporate is located on Bic Drive in Milford, Connecticut. The world head quarters of Bic Corporation (razors, pens, lighters, etc) used to be located on Bic Drive.

Marc's Note: Did anyone see this news report on TV? Jared got fat again! Look I'm not one to talk because I'm fat too, but Jared is the one who was made spokesman of Subway after losing 250 pounds by eating Subway.

It's Fogle, not Fogel. Yes, they will recover, and find a new spokesperson.

The Subway on Van Horn Road in Trenton, Michigan is a former Wendy's. It still looks like a Wendy's on the outside and to a lesser extent (due to the furniture that Subway put in) on the inside. It relocated from a strip mall across the road in 2012 or 2013. This Wendy's was a short-lived location, opening in 2002 and closing in 2006.

The Fogle situation is bad for Subway, but they have even bigger problems, chief among them that sales are falling due to its customer base moving on to options like Chipotle and Panera that are perceived as being healthier or better-tasting. They got busted for using a chemical in their sub rolls that was also used in yoga mats, which was probably a greater deterrent for going to Subway than having a pedophile spokesman. Subway was doing OK when their competition was the likes of McDonald's, Wendy's and Burger King, but the competition is fierce and getting fiercer all the time.

Is the Jared Fogle incident damaging?  You bet.
Will it be fatal?  Not likely.

Not even after Subway left a kid's online game called Jared's Pants Dance
active on their website for about a week after this story became public.  Oops!

They will get a new ad campaign going, and eventually people will forget
about him.  I say that having worked for a company that once hired Bill Cosby
as our spokesperson.

I do agree that their bigger challenge is
changing customer tastes and more competition.

subway sales have been lagging even before this scandal. I rather pay a little more than the stuff they serve, stopped eating their a long time ago. They over expanded and they will down the road will be what Mcdonlds is having issues now.

Subway just introduced a new logo based on their original logo:

A new symbol for Subway also has been introduced:

Both logos have been quietly rolled out in TV commercials, and are expected to go live next year.

Yes! I like to remember Subway for their submarine sandwiches made with fresh, baked bread. This really is a "fresh" new direction for the chain, which could never have come at a better time than this. They're positioning themselves for a great future with fresher ingredients and a "clean slate" while honoring their past. I really hope they bring back their New York City Subway wallpaper. I really loved that.

There has been mixed reactions to the new logo lately. Some say it's a welcome change from the previous Italic Subway logo, while others think of the Waste Management logo which used the same colors.

I used to like Marketplace.  It was an interesting program on consumer issues but has slowly shifted towards being somewhat anti-capitalist and against big corporations, they favor big government.  They're part of that being a national public network funded by government.

This remodel WILL be a major burden on franchisees.  They are small business people,
and most are not wealthy by any stretch of the imagination.  By forcing this Subway
WILL put a lot of them out of business (which is perhaps their intent).

I expect a flood of lawsuits will follow.

I rarely ever get subway, Wawa is better.
Then a couple of local hoagie places are leagues better.
Also Ordering tablets make sense since Wawa has had them over a decade at least, I imagine there are people that would rather choose all their options then order then have to watch the "Sandwich Artist" make the hoagie while asking them at each step what they want.

From what I've heard over the years, Subway isn't the easiest franchise to own & be a success. I've seen a lot of them go under over time, including the one we had in our small town. It's not exactly a money machine.

That's probably because apparently like Dunkin there is no exclusivity to one particular town for franchisees. Take my hometown of Bristol, Connecticut.

There are at least 3 different franchise owners for Subway.

I think 815 Pine Street, 296 Middle Street, 1400 Farmingon Ave (inside Walmart), and possibly 1197 Farmington Ave are all owned by one guy who owns like 2 1/2 dozen locations statewide

Now 123 Farmington Ave has a different owner. And I believe 59 North Main Street has a different owner than the rest.

Even the Subway website used the NYC subway motif back when they started in 1996:

Not quite sure how they figured these out anyway.

Our local one (for instance) opens at 8am, 9am on Sunday.  Seems a bit late for the weekdays (since a good amount of people in this area commute to a city about 20 miles away, so many are on the road before 8am) and even for the weekends (we've had people who would grab something for a trip, but we usually leave by 8 on a Saturday so it's a bit too late for that.

Others in surrounding areas open at 7, which would make more sense.  Hopefully they aren't just judging on existing traffic and not knowing what they might get by being open an hour or so earlier...
