Title: Thriftway
Post by: storehistoryguy on July 05, 2005, 09:08:59 AM
Thriftway and Shop "n" Bag both came together in 1996. I worked at an old, small Thriftway in Warminster back in the late 90's. It opened in the 60's. 10 isles. It closed in 2000. In 2002, it was taken over by a Dollar Land. I really miss it.

There isn't too many stores left using either name, as most are/were small, old stores who can't compete when a larger chain moves in. It is a grocery co-op like IGA and Shop Rite are.

And storehistoryguy, didn't that store become a SuperValu (another co-op) at one point? That is how I saw it referenced as on an out-of date grocery coupons page.

Here is their (very poorly designed) website:
http://www.thriftwayshopnbag.com/

And here is a "Thriftway" commercial from 1994 before both co-ops joined together :

This is a pic of Landis Thriftway in Schwenksville Pa. that went out of business in 2002. It opened in 1973 and was never remodeled. It always looked 70s like inside. Miles Pharmacy and Univest Bank which were inside the supermarket closed with it. Today the building sits abandon. Sad. :(

From what I can remember, Thriftway was bought out by Winn-Dixie in the late 80's or early 90's.  When W/D downsized in the early 2000's they were the first to go.

what was the store brand for Thriftway? Thriftway merged with Shop 'N Bag in 1884 becoming both Thriftway/Shop 'N Bag.
The Philadelphia area Thriftway 's store brand was Montco, named for their then-owners of their co-op, William Montgomery and Comapny.  Shop N' Bag's co-op owner was Frankford Grocery Company, who's headquarters was a couple of blocks north and one block East of PTC/SEPTA's Church Street Station, situated right behind the former HQ of The Frankford Trust Company.

There is a Thriftway store located at the SE Corner of Pratt Street & Frankfords Avenue, in a former Penn Fruit Company's "Marina" style supermarket building.

At Lansdowne Ave. and 61st Street in Philadelphia, there is a former '60s Acme with the peaked roof that became a Thriftway, which is now closed too. There is a mural on the side of the store!!! :holysh::huh::no::flaming: Just a note to anyone who may live in the area, if you want to go see it, it's in a bad area.

Thriftway was also the name for a separate chain of 21 grocery stores in the Cincinnati area, owned by Winn-Dixie.  The chain closed its doors in 2004.

One former location in Milford, Ohio.

Not sure about "nice" - I have very limited memories of the Anderson Twp. location, but the interior seemed dark and dated-looking just like the exterior. Not sure what the east-coast equivalent would be of a grocery store chain that is clearly a relic of the past but which has somehow held on through the years.

And yes, the Milford location is a swing set outlet. I should have seen what was left of the interior...maybe I will head back there sometime soon.

What I meant by nice was the design... the Mansard roof...

I remember Mott's (a franchise of Shop-Rite) had a unique design - the roof was curved. Unless in the last 10 years, they remodeled it, Wethersfield still had the swept roof. The old Mott's on Middle Turnpike in Manchester was remodeled but you can still see he contour of it. (Manchester's now a State building).

First National Stores had a slanted roof lines and tiles on the front.

Try this link below (it's really long but it works - you may have to highlight it, hit copy then paste into the address bar) - Should bring up a view of the Wethersfield store as a Price Rite - I see what you mean by the sloped roof - that is unusual.  Move left or right and you can get most of the store into view around the trees.

It appears the Thriftway/Shop 'N Bag branding in the Philadelphia area is done for, with stores slowly transitioning over to IGA- affiliated stores. I thought this was only a couple of store doing it but there is a small mention of it now on www.thriftwayshopnbag.com. It looks like a few new stores have joined in too, with a former SuperFresh in DE and a Pathmark in Philly that have been taken over by individual owners.

There are 4 Thriftway an shop n' Bag that is not switching to IGA.  They introduced a new website: http://www.thriftwayshopnbag.net/ (http://www.thriftwayshopnbag.net/)

The 4 are:

  • Crystal Lake Thriftway: 650 West Cuthbert Blvd, Westmont, NJ 08108 (Former Super Fresh Super Store/Clover/Grant City)
  • Holiday Shop n Bag: 6499 Sackett St, Philadelphia, PA 19149
  • Holiday Shop N Bag: 7938 Dungan Road, Philadelphia, PA 19111
  • Holiday Thriftway: Frankford & Pratt St, Philadelphia, PA 19124 (Former Penn Fruit Company)

I wonder how that agreement came about...anyway I'm glad to see the brand stick around a little while longer. They are using 'Best Yet' as their store brand...again. Thriftway/Shop 'n Bag was using this at their private label before White Rose. It looks like others have bailed out completely including JR's Fresh Market which only opened/joined up with Thriftway Shop n Bag last year...they seem to be being supplied by Foodtown now.

There are only 2 Shop 'N Bag's left the Mayfair Shop N Bag and the Holiday Shop N Bag at rhawn and dugan rd.
I was in the mayfair one this past sunday it now has reduced hours, only open until 7pm most days and there are many barren aisle's. I took a picture.

There is no closing banners or signs anywhere and according to a fb thread I started a worker there says no one has been told anything, and they are going through a bankruptcy hearing.
