Title: Kroger
Post by: tokensafari on January 06, 2005, 07:18:49 PM
Anyone that likes Kroger can post how they feel about the chain here. I prefer other stores, but they dominate our area for the most part, besides Wal-Mart and to local chains called Foodland, and Foodfair. We used to have Big Bear but Penn Traffic closed the Big Bear Stores as apart of a Chapter11 reorganization.

oh.. ok.. mybad dude.  To answer your question...  they have stores all over the US, but they operate under different names. Krogers operates Krogers mostly on the east coast, Mid atlantic region. I hope that helps, i know it's rather broad.. but i hope this helps!

Headquartered in Cincinnati, Ohio. They operate stores, such as: Fry's, Kings Soopers, Ralphs, Dillons, Baker's, Hilander, and many others. Krogers is the third largest retailer in the US today.

I love Kroger.  I wish we had them in Evansville.  Instead we have Wal-Mart Hometown Markets, Schnucks--a pricey St. Louis MO based grocer, and Buy-Low--a somewhat local chain that is quickly growing out of Jasper Indiana.  In fact, they just bought out several of the Wynn-Dixie stores in Louisville KY.

Our Kroger supermarket has a gas station.

There's a Kroger at Graceland shopping center in Columbus that looks like what Harts & Big Bear used to be like.  They call it, Kroger MarketPlace.  The place at Columbus is the first of these stores for Kroger.

Well, I live in Krogerland. The one down the road from me closed and became a Stein Mart (what an unpleasant surprise). It was replaced by a bigger, freshly built one across the street. I actually started streaming tears when I saw the old one as Stein Mart!  I had grown up with it! Literally, tears were pouring down my face!:(

Kroger has been in Norton, Virginia two different times. First back in the 50 & 60's it was located down town where First Union Bank is now located. It closed in the 60's an A&P took over the building. It then came back in 1979 when the Norton Square shopping center opend, it was also anchored with Magic Mart. Krogers stay open until about 1986 when it closed. They had an aweomse deli. You could always smell the fresh bread baking. After Krogers closed the building became a Pay Less Supermarket, it closed around 1990 and then they building became a Food Lion. Food Lion completed remolded the store moving the enterance of the building from the side of the building to the center. Food Lion closed about 1998. About 1999 the building became a Sav o Lot and about a couple of months ago Norton Community Hosptial has bought the shopping center. NCH said they would honor the leases of the business but Sav o Lot's will run out at the end of the year. Sav o lot is plainging to move to Wise, Va about 3 miles away to part of the former Food Lion which has been spilt with Tractor Supply.

Here's the way it looked before Kroger's moved about 3miles down the road to a store they bought out. I love these style Krogers. The one is Norton, Virginia looked just like this one. Kroger opened this store in 1977. It is 26,000 sq. ft located in the Kroger Plaza Madison West Virginia. It is now a supermarket I can't remember what the new name is but it is just like Kroger's on the inside.Kroger's bought out Black's FOODLAND and moved into their building. Black's then went and bought out the least on this building and now it's a
Food Land Fresh owned by Black's. Does anybody know the story on this please post it. This is a reallly odd story.

Former Krogers in Hazard Kentucky.Located in the
Town & Country Plaza Center, at the intersection of Highway 80 and 15. When the shopping center was built other anchors included kmart which is still open and CVS Pharmacy which is now closed also, I think a Dollar General is in the CVS. The buidling size 41,239 SF. Krogers closed 12/27/2005.
This was right after a super Wal Mart opened up in Hazard, I'am sure that had something to do with it.

Hey!  It's my Kroger!  I used to LOOOOOVE going there when I was young.  I knew the layout by heart, and still pretty much do.  They moved across the street to, from what I last heard, the 2nd largest Kroger in the nation.  Fortunately for me, the Kroger in Cherry Grove Plaza has the same layout as the one in your picture.  (It is a former T.J. An old Kroger's Superstore in Garland Texas.

This Kroger's superstore is soon-to-be renovated  and will house a Tax Office, Justice of the Peace, Constable's office, and Juvenile and Adult Probation offices. Each of these operations is currently located in various parts of the city, and utilize approximately 21,200 square feet in their existing space.

The new building will feature 40,750 square feet. Dallas County has approved for the first time a "design-build" contract with the firm of Harrison Harper & Walker in order to save time and money. The total design and construction are estimated at $2.6 million with an expected completion date of December 2006

This former Kroger greenhouse in Houston became a MacFrugal's, rebranded Big Lots of course. It was built in 1983 and moved to a much bigger store in the late 80's or 90's. The new store has since been converted to a Kroger "Signature" store. The white facade was added when MacFrugal's opened.

This is an old Kroger's Superstore located in Parkway Plaza. It hasn't been a Kroger's for about 25 years. Kroger's moved up to Stone Drive and this location became a Food Country Usa for several years and has set vacant for about 15 years. Some store is using it for storage, it's full of furniture. By looking at the brick on the building it looks to be pretty old. Kroger's started building some of their superstore this style in the early 1970's

After Kroger closed this store was boarded up for nearly 15 years. Save a Lot food stores only occupies 1/2 of the original Kroger space. The other half was a indoor skateboard park and is now vacant again. This entire shopping center has been struggling since 1998 when Builders Square closed and remains empty.

Former Kroger "superstore" located at West 130th and Brookpark Roads in Cleveland, OH. Was a Pick-N-Pay after Kroger closed, and has been a flea market for almost 20 years now. Currently a furniture store occupies the building; the Flea Bazaar moved across the parking lot in part of the former Clarkins/DIY building.

This building originally opened in the early 1980's as a Kroger greenhouse, then was taken over by Big Bear after Kroger closed this store, which I'm guessing mid-1980's, when Kroger pulled out of Northeast OH. This Big Bear closed with the rest of the chain after Penn Traffic pulled out of OH. The store remains vacant today.

Somerset, Kentucky

Kroger's move from its location of 29 years on East Ky. 80 to a larger, newer building on U.S. 27 was made official Wednesday with a grand opening ceremony.

Shoppers searching for deals crowded around the store's doors before it opened at 8 a.m., and business remained steady throughout the day.

"We're just pleased to have this facility for the customers," said store manager Bill Feck. "They deserve it."

The 48,000 square-foot store, located where Winn-Dixie used to be, boasts expanded meat, produce, deli, health food and frozen departments and it offers a salad bar, olive bar and a hot soup bar. The new building also houses a drive-thru pharmacy.

Feck, who has been with Kroger for 30 years, said the larger building will help Kroger bring more choices to its customers, which he said wasn't possible at the smaller store.

"We can stock items we didn't sell at the old store," he said. "We can carry different products to find out what (the customers) want."

Feck also said many customers had been impressed with the new building, which is almost 20,000 square feet larger than the old store on Ky. 80.

"Everybody's telling me how beautiful it is," Feck said.

Feck also said the move from the old location to the new one went smoothly because of the store's employees.

"I'm just proud of my people," he said.

The new store hours are 7 a.m. to 12 a.m. Monday through Friday and 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Sundays.

This is a old Kroger's Superstore of the 1970's, that has been remolded, but is soon to be demolish and rebuilt on site. This store south of the Ohio State University campus at North High Street and Seventh Avenue. It plans to expand the store's size and offerings. The building will expand from 36,000 square feet to more than 56,000 square feet.

Hupman said the additional space means added amenities. While Kroger has not committed to specific changes, a flower department, coffee shop, expanded deli, salad bar and eating area are among the possibilities.

The store entrance will face north, which opens the site up to both the university area to the north and the Weinland Park neighborhood to the east.

Turkey Hill convenience stores have long been owned separately from the ice cream/drinks. Their stores used to have Exxon, but that was converted to Turkey Hill gas.

What is interesting is Turkey Hill has five sister chains that share their logo. One is called Tom Thumb, but not related to the Tom Thumb supermarkets owned by Safeway/Randalls.

Actually, no they are not. Both the dairy and the mini marts are owned by Kroger...Turkey Hill products are sold in other Kroger-owned mini marts as well (Tom Thumb, Quik Stop..).

"The expansion into eastern Ohio came because of the areas close connections to Pittsburgh. The dairy started selling its products at Tops Markets locations in Cleveland last year. It broke into the Columbus market in March, working with the Kroger supermarket chain. Turkey Hill is owned by a Kroger Co. subsidiary."

Not sure of the location of this picture. But it looks excatly like the Kroger's Superstore that was located in Norton, Va. It was open in 1978 and stayed open for only about 10 years before coming a Food Lion. But the picture brought back memories.

Kroger was located down the road about two miles in Madison, West Virginia in a 1970's Superstore. Kroger's bought out this supermarket which was a Black's and moved thier store there to the new location. The people who owned this building went down the road and rented the old superstore and put a Food World in it.

You might want to look in Houston or Dallas in Texas, or parts of Tennessee. Michigan would be nice, where they have Kroger. I am not sure about greenhouses though.

In the late 60's/early 70's, Kroger built a type of store called Kroger Family Center. They were larger than the typical Kroger of the time, running approximately 70,000 sq. ft. I know these stores existed in at least the following locations:

Mattoon, IL (E. IL 16, now Big Lots)
Lafayette, LA (Downtown, half torn down, the rest now a postal facility)
New Iberia, LA (between E. Main and E. St Peter streets, now a bowling alley and a local grocery)
Morgan City, LA (Brashear Ave.; was last a Canal Villere; abandoned)
Lake Charles, LA (E. Sallier St., Still operates as a Kroger)
Orange, TX (N. 16th St., Still operates as a Kroger)
Longview, TX (W. Marshall Ave., Still operates as a Kroger Signature store)
Marshall, TX (East End Blvd., Still operates as a Kroger Signature store)

These stores are a quite distinctive architecture. They were of tilt wall construction, with a covered walkway at the front made usually of concrete. Some of these stores still have this walkway (Longview lost the walkway with the greenhouse-style remodel). They were usually wider than they were deep. All of them had a full service restaurant, deli, bakery, pharmacy, and the works. Does anyone know of any more of these?

(if I've put this in the wrong category, let me know. It straddles southeast and southwest.)

...And now Kroger exits Rockford, IL, selling their Hilander supermarkets to, you guessed it, Schnucks!  Schnucks becomes the dominant supermarket operator in the market, leapfrogging Walmart.  Their takeover is, if anything, even faster than Kroger's takeover of Schnucks in Memphis.

Post by: retailisking on February 07, 2012, 01:18:10 AM
A potential $25 billion deal would be by far the largest in the history of the supermarket business. Ahold, Delhaize and Carrefour are seen as possible suitors. Carrefour is a colossus internationally - it's second only to Walmart in terms of worldwide sales - but its attempt at operating hypermarkets in the early 90s in the Philadelphia market was unsuccessful.

If Ahold buys Kroger, it'd be a slap in the face to Finast. IIRC, Ahold pulled out of Ohio because they couldn't compete with Giant Eagle. If they want to try again, I can think of a few old Tops stores that are STILL vacant since the closures, and one that briefly became a Giant Eagle before closing again. Heck, there's an Apples (very local chain - only 4 locations) that took over one of the vacated Tops that uses 99% of the old signage, right down to the diamond-shaped aisle markers, but with "apples" stickers put on them.

It would be just as big a slap in the face to the legacy of Ukrops in Richmond. An Ahold buyout of Kroger would mean the stark possibility of traditional grocery having a duopoly (Ahold and Delhaize via Food Lion). Between this and how the switch to Martin's has dragged the ex-Ukrops stores down into the ground, was it worth keeping all the stores open which Harris Teeter wouldn't have done?

Back on topic, Ahold does fine rabble-rousing Giant Eagle in the Altoona and Johnstown areas and their confusing rivalry in Frederick, MD is entering its second decade. If Ahold bought Kroger, they'd do just fine in the Morgantown, Columbus, and Toledo markets.

Do you know if there are anymore Apples Supermarkets left in the area at all or not jason83080? I am pretty much from the same area. I am only asking this, because Giant Eagle purchased all of the Apples Supermarkets around me and in the surrounding counties back in 1999/2000. Ahold is loaded with cash and looking to grow in the USA, and Kroger has been content to make small deals like the trade with Schnucks in Memphis and Rockford. I can't see a deal of that magnitude happening any time soon, and Quincy is the nucleus of Ahold USA's operations. It just doesn't make sense to me.  If anything in Stop & Shop territory is up for grabs it would be Shaw's or A&P.

These A&P locations are still listed in the state of CT (from apfreshonline.com store locator):
160 West Putnam Ave. - Greenwich, CT 06831
1261 East Putnam Ave. - Riverside, CT 06878
1201 High Ridge Road - Stamford, CT 06905
1 Padanaram Rd - Danbury, CT 06811
There are several others listed as Wine, Beer and Spirits, but I think these are the only "real" supermarkets (aside from the one Food Emporium mentioned in the other post).

Of course, don't forget that Stop & Shop "Territory" includes more than just New England - NY and NJ have Stop & Shop stores also (and a lot more A&P and other family members like Pathmark locations as well).

Here are 4 that I found (had a list as we were out that way, though not these particular areas - had made the list not being sure where we'd wind up being):

Apples - 1051 Meister Road     Lorain
Apples - 230 North Abbe Road   Elyria
Apples - 400 Sheffield Center   Sheffield
Apples - 4100 Ivanhoe Avenue   Sheffield Lake

Thank you very much for providing me with this information BillyGr. I really appreciate it. Back when I was a teenager, I loved Apples Supermarkets. When they sold all of their locations in my area to Giant Eagle back in 1999/2000, I thought that they sold every single location it was that they had. Very happy to find out that I was wrong!

There is one old Tops Friendly Markets location in the city of Akron that is no longer going to be available. This location is in a very big plaza on Waterloo Road. The plaza also happens to have a Marc's Deep Discounts Store which is a local grocery store supermarket chain. Marc's current location in this plaza is too small to meet the needs of their customers at this location, while at the same time, the business at this Marc's location keeps increasing. Due to heavy sales and the store not being big enough, Marc's is going to be moving into the original location in the plaza that used to be Tops Friendly Markets. Marc's will still be in the exact same plaza, but at the same time in the former Tops Friendly Markets space.

Yep, those are the four. Meister Road used to be a Stop-n-Shop, then was a Giant Eagle, prior to becoming an Apples. The same holds true for Ivanhoe in Sheffield Lake. Sheffield Center used to be a Tops, and Apples simply moved in, put some food on the shelves, wrote "apples" on the Tops aisle markers, and opened back up. The only original Apples store is the one in Elyria.

What happened to the Meister Road and Ivanhoe Giant Eagle stores after they bought out Stop-n-Shop?

Also, when you say the original Apples Supermarket location is in Elyria, when exactly did this location open? Did it open after they sold all of their locations to Giant Eagle in 1999/2000 and decided to start their business again afterwards or did this location originally open way back in the 1970's/80's and was one of the locations that they decided not to sell to Giant Eagle back in 1999/2000?

Lorain's and Sheffield Lake's Giant Eagles were smaller stores. They were 'transformed' into a hybrid "Rini-Rego/Sparkle" store (which, pretty much, consisted of keeping the existing signage, but putting "Rini-Rego/Sparkle" on everything in place of Giant Eagle. I can't really speak for Lorain's location, since I never get out that way, but ours in SL went BACK to being a Giant Eagle after the failed RR/S experiment was shelved. In November '10, their lease was up, so they closed up shop and vacated, since there were other nearby locations that were much nicer/larger/more heavily trafficked...

- Sheffield Village, Sheffield Crossing plaza - a newer store, built in either 1997 or 1998, vacating the old Kroger across the street (now Discount Drug Mart)
- Elyria, Midway Market Square plaza - a newer store, built after the Giant Eagle takeover, vacating the old Kroger in Midway Mall (now Staples and the old Bennigan's/parking area, which is now Ground Round)
- Avon Lake, Learwood Square plaza - unsure of its history; it's always been at that location since I moved out here in 1996, but it IS a larger store, which is open 24 hours
- Westlake, Promenade/Crocker Park plaza - It was, originally, a VERY fancy Rini-Rego Marketplace store, which was transformed into a Giant Eagle upon the merger. It had the video store - which was closed and absorbed into the regular store floor - and even expanded into the vacated CVS/pharmacy space next door when that store moved to its own building nearby. That side of the store's a hot mess, but it'll get evened out someday!

Sweetbay is/was Delhaize's attempt to turn around the struggling Kash n' Karry banner by moving it upscale. It hasn't been terribly successful, as evidenced by their decision to close one-third of their stores. There is speculation that the entire chain could eventually be shuttered. I don't know if Kroger would be interested, really, as they generally don't like turnaround situations like this. Entering a state as saturated with supermarkets like Florida (which has 760 Publix stores) isn't for the meek.

Sweetbay's closure (and likely eventual demise) could also be an opportunity for Albertsons to rebuild their store base. BTW, can you pinpoint to me where Kroger is in Florida? They don't show on Kroger's official map:

I believe Kroger's only presence in Florida is Tom Thumb and Littman Jewelers, a non-grocery subsidiary. Closest stores to Florida are in Georgia? I could be wrong...

Sweetbay is a local chain that is run (or mismanaged?) by Delhaize. Better prices than Publix and Winn-dixie (and I can get Friendlys Ice Cream and Polar beverage from it), but needs someone who'd manage it better. Not a Knock on Hannaford, I heard from a friend in Maine Hannaford is not the same since Delhaize bought them.

We had Kroger's here in Pittsburgh when I was growing up.  Shopped there often as
that was the closest supermarket to our home.  They bailed out in 1985 after local unions had gone on strike against them.  (similar union militantcy had driven many prior chains such as Thorofare, Loblaws and A&P out of Pittsburgh)

The Shop n' Save store on Noblestown Road is clearly identifiable from the outside
as a former Kroger's.  The Kuhn's Supermarket on Banksville Road was as well until
a recent remodel.

Kind of nostalgic for me now to visit my daughter in Toledo and go shopping
at Kroger's.

A news article on the opening of a new Kroger at Ford Avenue and Fort Street in Wyandotte, Michigan in 1957. It was later replaced by a greenhouse-style store in neighboring Southgate on Eureka Road. This building later became Arbor Drugs and, currently, CVS. The Southgate greenhouse store later became Foodland and today is Big Lots. Quote from: the above linkKroger to buy 7 Hiller's supermarkets, close 1

Kroger of Michigan has reached an agreement to buy all seven Hiller's Market locations in southeastern Michigan in a deal that will close a Commerce Township location in July but keep the remaining stores open.

"They're going to operate six of the seven stores," Hiller's vice president Justin Hiller said. "The only store they will not operate is our location on Union Lake Road in Commerce Township because they have a brand-new store and fuel center directly across the street."

Kroger does not currently have a plan in place for the Union Lake Road property, said Ken McClure, consumer communications manager for Kroger of Michigan.

"We will assume the lease for that location as part of the agreement," he said.

The other six stores will operate under the Hiller's banner until the sale is finalized in early July, McClure said. The locations then will switch to the Kroger brand.

"We've been in discussions for several months," Hiller said of the sale.

Hiller and McClure declined to comment Friday on terms of the sale.

"Terms of the agreement will not be disclosed," McClure said.

Most current Hiller's employees will remain in the stores as Kroger employees, Hiller said.

"Hiller's associates are encouraged to apply for positions," he said. "Kroger is going to be hiring most of Hiller's employees."

Kroger also partners with the same collective bargaining unit as Hiller's, he said.

"This keeps the union in place and eases the transition for the employees," he said.

McClure said he did not know how many existing Hiller's staff members will be hired as Kroger employees.

"We're not measuring it in terms of percentage as much as looking for all enthusiastic and friendly people who want to come into the Kroger family," he said. "Our intention is to take as many associates as possible who are a good fit and who are willing."

Hiller said preserving jobs motivated the sale.

"Kroger is looking for a lot of experienced associates in leadership positions as well as in other roles, so part of the motivation was to take care of my employees," he said. "Competition is tough, but this is an opportunity for Hiller's employees to start a career with Kroger."

McClure said Kroger was drawn to Hiller's reputation of providing local and ethnic foods.

"We're always growing and learning in those spaces, and we're looking forward to continuing those traditions," he said. "We've been on an aggressive plan of local and ethnic foods for the last several years so this is really a good fit for us."

McClure also said he worked with Hiller's for 20 years, including eight years as chief operating officer before leaving in January 2014.

"I worked there for a very long time, and I couldn't be more proud to be a part of the company that is carrying the Hiller's legacy forward."

Along with the Union Lake Road location in Commerce Township, Hiller's currently operates stores in Ann Arbor, Northville, Plymouth, South Lyon, West Bloomfield, and another in Commerce Township.

I was the Ames representative in an acquired Zayre store in Jacksonville, Florida
when Ames decided to terminate the Zayre Senior Discount Program.

As the only guy in the building wearing an Ames ID badge did I catch hell
from just about every mature customer who walked in the building!

If that wasn't bad enough, they also ended Zayre's Military Discount Program.
Jacksonville being a big Navy town, that alienated a lot of the less-mature shoppers.

Ames then instituted a Senior Discount program of their own....several years
after I had left the company.

It may have to do with the pending Kroger-Albertsons merger, which is still hung-up in antitrust related legal challenges.  Albertsons appears to own the following chains with a presence in Connecticut.

Acme Markets
Balducci's
Kings Food Markets

I presume those would become Kroger badges if the merger goes through.

Those are Albertson's brands.  I know Acme has a handful of stores in CT (that they got from the bankruptcy of A&P), all in the corner closest to NY State.  Not sure if the other two are there also, but if so likely just as limited.

Unless they figure on expanding at some point (since Shaw's, also part of the company now, pulled out of CT it's the "gap" between those few Acme locations and the rest of Shaw's in RI/MA/VT/NH/ME for the overall company).

Yes, and Kroger has been trying to acquire Albertsons.  That has been slow-going as the Federal Government, states and consumer groups have been challenging it on antitrust grounds.  I did see where one of those lawsuits got tossed the other day.

I know that has been in the works.  The point is that even with that, Acme only has a small number of stores in the state, and some of the towns/cities mentioned on those job posts are beyond the areas that any stores are in.

So, either they are thinking of expanding, or maybe one of those delivery only setups like they have done elsewhere (hiring people from towns they would deliver to, to pick up from a central spot and bring deliveries back to their own area(s))?
Title: Re: Kroger
Post by: TheFugitive on August 11, 2023, 01:31:26 PM
If they intend to keep those stores and not close them/sell them off it would make sense for Kroger to also open some new ones.  There are certain economies at scale in play where if you are going to remain in an area and provide distribution centers and support you need to run with a minimum number of stores in order to maximize your return on investment.

How competitive is Connecticut as a grocery market at this point?  I haven't been there since I worked for Ames 30+ years ago.
Title: Re: Kroger

Not really sure.

Last I knew Stop & Shop is around most areas, Big Y is in some parts of the state and there are a few other things (like some ShopRite locations, as well as their PriceRite brand) that took over some of the Shaw's locations when they pulled out, along with a few A&P spots (PriceRite going into some of the older and smaller stores as they fit those better).
Also, I'm pretty sure still a few scattered Price Chopper/Market 32 stores (likely mostly on the NY side of the state), but not sure that it is many.
