Title: Hardee's/Carl's Jr.
Post by: HoJofan206 on March 30, 2005, 02:33:01 AM
Has anyone noticed how many Hardee's restaurants have gone out of business over the past 5 years?  They used to be EVERYWHERE and now you find so many "ghost" buildings along the highways and hometowns across the country.  What did you like best about Hardee's?  and least?
I currently like the slammer burgers, but they are a bit costly for what you get.

my parent have this thing called the Hardee's award. it came about when my parents went to a extremly dirty hardee's reataurant. Now every restaurant that is really filthy gets the hardee's award.

The Hardee's down south (Carolina's) are real nice, at least the ones we ate at during a road trip fo Florida. They are all updated, clean, and food that beats McBurgerKing hands down.

The few remaining ones in PA, which we passed on a school trip to Gettysburg, were still using the 80's-early 90's color scheme and logo(before the Carls. Jr Buyout). I saw many closed ones too.

We have about 10 Hardee's in Michigan, we used to have over 100. One that I frequented was only open for 6 years! (Closed 1995, still empty!) One that's still open actually went Burger Chef -> Hardee's -> Burger King -> Hardee's!

The ones around here are barely operating! They were really popular when i was little, but now they are slowly fading away. Why? Because Wendy's, Taco Bell, Mcdonalds, and Subway. I think more & more Burger King will head this way.

Burger King is a chain that is hurting as well.  We have lost 3 of them here in my hometown over the past few years.  We have also lost 4 or 5 Hardee's locations.  Arby's took their locations and built new stores.

I think places like: Wendy's, Taco Bell, and Mcdonalds are hurting restuarants like Hardees and Burger King. Although i think Burger King is in a much better position than Hardees.

Our Hardee's was only open 10 years. The building is still empty as well as 2 others nearby. I remember it was kind of clean, but not spotless. The fried chicken was good and the burgers.

Yeah, I've noticed that over the past 10 years or so, you don't see Hardee's as much. I saw it all the time when I was younger. It is true, I've noticed in the highway side restaurant clusters, Hardee's isn't there anymore. Though the ones near me seem to be doing pretty well for themselves. I enjoy their food, it blows away Mc'Donalds or Wendy's (IMO). I don't understand what happened. :-?

I remember going to a Hardee's in Clifton Forge, VA heading back on our Washington DC trip.  The place was alright.  One of mine classmates bought a California rasin and he did some sick stuff with it.  Good times. good times.

Are there any Hardee's restaurant left in the Huntington area?  There's one in Cricleville, OH and another in Greenup, KY.

Remember those stupid Hardee's commercials from a few years back.  My least favorite was the one where the guy talked about his car being broken down and all he wanted was some fries and only Hardee's was around and he wondered how they could screw up french fries.  How un-flattering is that?

Post by: HoJofan206 on August 04, 2005, 11:59:29 PM
Another stupid Hardee's slogan was the: "Now introducing longer lines at Hardee's".  It was meant to make you think your food was being prepared to order, but most people took it as a slow long wait for fast food.  Bad idea alltogether. :yup:

There were 3 Hardee's restaurants in Albany:

Colonie: Central Avenue(Route 5): Became Boston Market - Now a pizza place.

Latham: Troy Schenectady Road(Route 7): Now King Buffet

Clifton Park: Route 146: Not sure of its status. May be another restaurant.

Rt. 60: Still operating, but is still struggling.

Downtown: Doing well. They do like classic car shows there once a month, so i think that helps. It's a nice location and is clean too.

The Clifton Park one was converted into a bank branch (at the time Troy Savings, now owned by First Niagara - they actually moved from a location across Rt. 9).  I think it still is a bank, but haven't been that way recently so I can't be sure.

A former Hardees on Route 7 that is now a Chinese buffet.  This one closed quite a few years ago (10 or so) and was one of only a couple ever in this area (Clifton Park had one, there was also one in Cobleskill, don't know of others in the Albany area).

Ate at Hardee's twice when I visited Florida way back in the day. I used to like their curly fries. They seem to be a victim of harsh press and abomindable health violations which probably earns them the clunker prize of worst places to dine fast.

My grandparents used to Winter in Florida and their drive from upstate New York would always include a stopover or two at a Hardee's. They had a collection of coffee mugs.

One Winter I remember my family making the trip to visit the grandparents and we made certain we stopped at Hardee's. Their buttermilk biscuit breakfast sandwhiches were excellent. Although, knowing what I know now of their ingrediants.. my stomach churns at the thought of digesting one.

Oh I hear ya buddy. I cringe everytime I see McDonalds or Burger King unveil a triple hamburger with cheese, mayo and bacon. How can you recover from such a saturated impact of grossness? My heart ached in fear when Hardee's unveiled that controversal one million calorie thing (don't remember what it was...) last year.

I drive from the Philadelphia area to Dover, DE about three times a year to visit a Hardee's.  LOVE their food.  Monster Thickburger, fries, and a Pibb.

There was a Hardee's near the intersection of PA 73 and PA 100 in the Gilbertsville, PA area.  Last time I checked (I go to Zern's Farmer's Market on occasion), it was a pizza joint.

I used to see quite a few when I lived up north and also in the Orlando area.  It was nice since they had more things than just burgers and I remember that they had good ham & cheese sandwiches and hot dogs.

An interesting bit of trivia - my daughter and I were standing in line at lunchtime in our local Hardees in Kissimmee, FL when we all looked out the window to see the space shuttle take off when we realized that it was the Challenger exploding.  It left a very spooky "Y" in the sky that stayed that way for the entire rest of the day!

Here's a former Hardee's it closed down about 1990, it moved about a mile or two down the road to a new shopping center and is still open there, when I get the time I'll take a picture of it, but for now here's a picture of the old Hardee's it was built about the same time all of them in Wise County Virginia was built and that was the late 1970's. This Hardee's was located on Main Street right in center of the city of Norton, Virginia. Built right beside of Long John's Silver, and Pizza Hut. They have all closed since and all are something else. It is now a  Yamato Japanesse Steak House.

Sadly I don't think there are any Hardee's restaurants left around Pittsburgh. The last ones I remember were in Monroeville and Millvale. The one in Monroeville became a Kenny Rogers' Roasters for a while then a Starbuck's. The one in Millvale closed I think. Such a sin too because I thought it was so cool how they had this dumbwaiter looking thing that carried food from the kitchen over a section of the dining room and to the drive thru booth.

There was a Hardee's in Brattleboro, VT on Putney Road.  It was open roughly 1985-1991.  The owner of the franchise, Albert Schutzman, died in February.  Were there any other locations in Vermont?  I seem to recall them being in Western Mass in roughly the same time frame, too.

Hardee's is making a come back in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, and Jersey. Back in the day when my Mom was growing up they had on in New Britain, Connecticut next to New Brite Plaza where McDonald's is now.

Hard to imagine them succeeding now when they couldn't cut it in the region last time. Sure, burgers are all the rage, but Five Guys, Red Robin, and a host of others got here first, to say nothing of the firmly-entrenched Big 3. The timing is interesting, as their parent company recently put CKE on the block:

Photo #1 shows an ex-Hardee's in Riverview, Michigan, which was at 17168 Fort Street. First opened around 1974, torn down and rebuilt sometime during the 1980's, closed nearly two decades ago. It was later re-occupied by Kola's Food Factory and is now EZ Epicure.

Photo #2 shows an ex-Burger Chef-turned Hardee's in Lincoln Park, Michigan, which was at 1817 Dix Highway, across from the Sears shopping center. This one was later at least two independent restaurants: Leon's and currently, Charlie's.

Photo #3 shows another ex-Hardee's in Lincoln Park, this one at 4086 Fort Street. This particular one, which was already operating at the time Burger Chef went out of business in 1983 (and a BC was already operating across Fort Street in a building that was eventually demolished for a Burger King) was a casualty of the 1997 bankruptcy-triggered closures and was converted into a Wendy's then and still operates as one today.

There used to be one in NY State near Syracuse? Or maybe it was a Carl's Jr?

Either way there's a small number in Florida.

That would definitely be a Hardee's-Carl's Jr. was and is still confined to the western states, although both chains do share the same nationally-televised commercials.

The only Hardees in my area is a franchised store in Millvale, PA, a few
miles north of Pittsburgh.  Not too convenient to where I live.  I understand
the owner there deviates from the standard menu by offering buckets of fried
chicken or something.

This store closed no later than 2002 and that was being generous in how late they closed. I never ate there however.

For me, the closest Hardee's locations (of which there are two) are all the way on the opposite side of the Detroit area from where I am. And I too may hear Hardee's/Carl's commercials on the national networks occasionally.

Is it a common theme at all hardee's to not have half of the items they sell on their menu or is it just the hardee's I go to? When I look online they have a much larger menu then they do in the store and when you ask them if they have these things they say yes but it is nowhere to be found on the menu.

Apparently they have landed themselves in controversy again with another Super Bowl
ad featuring a hot, scantily clad young woman suggestively eating a hamburger.

Yawn.  Naked? Not hardly.
I see young women wearing less walking down virtually every sidewalk
in the summer.   These people need to get a life.

A new Hardee's is now under construction in Woodhaven, Michigan, where a Shell station used to stand.

In Australia, Hardee's was called Hartee's, and was franchised by Kellogg's. In the 1960s and 1970s, Hartee's brought fast food hamburgers into Australia before McDonald's and Hungry Jack's (a Burger King franchise) were introduced.

Was that because Hartee was a play on "hearty"?
Or does Hardees mean something untoward in Australia?   ???

There used to be a Hardee's on Spencer Street in Manchester that became a Roy Roger's and I believe it is a Wendy's. It is next to the exit off I-384 near the East Hartford town line.

Growing up, I've eaten at many Hardee's locations in the 1990s, some with an orange Hardee's logo on a blue rectangular sign, and some with an orange Hardee's logo on a brown rectangular sign. Is there any other differences between these restaurants besides different-colored signage and buildings?

The attempt to launch Carl's Jr. in the Hudson Valley in New York appears to be failing as the second restaurant in the region has closed. Only one remains (Poughkeepsie) and prospects for its survival are looking grim.

So this means that Hardee's/Carl's Jr. will be even farther away than before.
It's not like I was ever going to go anyways.

And the couple others I know of closed quite a few years ago - Latham was a Chinese buffet for some time and is now the site of Sonic, while the Clifton Park one became a bank.

Well, you said there was... ;) - But seriously they were in the area at one point (see my reply at that time about Latham and Clifton Park, and there was also one at one time out in Cobleskill area) so it seems that one in Queensbury would have been quite possible/likely.

That's the site, though the Sonic was built new - prior to that it had been a Chinese buffet in the old Hardees building for many years.

Also the Clifton Park one is the plaza with the Target, the small building on your right as you enter the one way in only ramp from the Route 146 side - it was a bank after Hardees but I don't know for certain what is there now.
