It must be where everything is truly a dollar, and not even below.  Like a stick of gum or pencil.

Here's a pic of the Ames in Tilton NH.  The entire store is now a Dollar Tree.  It was a small store of about 32,000 sq.-ft.

The 1/3 of the Ames in Bangor ME became Dollar Tree too!

I know its not Dollar Tree but its the Dollar Store

THE DOLLAR STORE HAS THE MOST CHEAPEST LOOKING SHOPPING CARTS I'VE EVER SEEN!

they are red. small and it basically have bars that are small with no logo on the side or front whatsoever

I mean they look almost like toys!:o

this is not a ** thread

This is a question

Why would a store pursue to have shopping carts that are cheap looking and possible reasons for demoralizing and downsizing the quality of the companies image?
Title: Re: Dollar Tree
Post by: Anonymous on February 14, 2005, 11:17:25 PM
Both Family Dollar and Dollar General have "DOLLAR" in their name, but most of their stuff is over a dollar...so what Dollar Tree did with the "Everything's a Dollar" slogan wasn't that dumb.
Title: Re: Dollar Tree
Post by: Anonymous on February 14, 2005, 11:18:13 PM
I know what you're saying MBZ321 IT DOES MAKE SENSE!

I'm just saying that having a slogan saying "Everything's $1.00" is unheard of to me in me knowing dollar stores because usually they don't obviously say that everything costs a dollar because people already expect everything in their stores to cost a dollar.

SO THATS THE FIRST TIME I'VE EVER SEEN A DOLLAR STORE ACTUALLY SAY EVERYTHING COSTS A $1.00

HOWEVER FROM WHAT YOU'RE SAYING MBZ321 IS THAT DOLLAR TREE IS ACTUALLY A TRUE DOLLAR STORE WHERE EVERYTHING COSTS A DOLLAR OR LESS!

so for once there is a true $1.00 store out there!

and they're not using it as a hoodwinking getup like Family Dollar with their cheap looking carts due

IN COMPARISON

DOLLAR TREE VS. Family Dollar

Dollar Tree-sells everything at a dollar or less

Family Dollar-uses dollar name as a cover for actual costs which are much as around possibly five dollars!

Dollar Tree-green professional looking shopping carts

Family Dollar-red thin bar small cheap looking shopping carts

WHOs THE BETTER OF THE TWO? YOU DECIDE!

I live 5 min from the old Ames store...its sad seein the last part of it go. What's weird is that 10% of the old store still remains inbetween Dollar Tree and Bed Bath and Beyond. Don't know what will go in that slot.  I'll take a picture with my phone tomorrow on the way to class and post it now that I got a little free time

Family Dollar is one of the fastest growing Fortune 500 companies of 2004.  They, on average, are opening more new stores than any other retailer in the country, that includes Wal-Mart.  Just thought that was an interesting fact I picked up from the Wall Street Journal.

In Laconia we have a Family Dollar and in Tilton is the Dollar Tree. Well the Family Dollar Store, things are cheap but not all a dollar, the Dollar Tree evey thing is a $1 or under.  I like both.  Along with Big lots. Don't like shopping at W------ if I can help it. Like Target to.

Here's the Dollar tree in the Delaware plaza - this store (including the GNC space, I believe) was a Brooks, which then became Revco and then CVS (who closed it since they have a store about 1/2 mi down the road).

The first store is the Cobleskill store (in with the Super WalMart on Route 7).

The second is the Oneonta location, on Route 28, near the Hannaford (for some reason, Hannaford sits by itself and the rest of the stores are in a separate strip).

I generally avoid these types of stores like the plague because they don't really have good bargains and there's alot of off-name brands that I wouldn't buy anyway.  However, we have a great Dollar Tree that has opened in a former Michael's space and it is great.

When my daughter was moving into her first apartment, I spent 6 months going there on a regular basis and was able to furnish her whole kitchen for not alot of money.  They are also super clean and the store in my area has regular sized carts, but I will check them out next time to see if they belonged to any other chains.......

;) ;) ;)

Here is the newly built store in Valatie (town of Kinderhook) NY - in the plaza with Hannaford.

It has a bit of historic look (again due to town codes) but is a brand new building.  It is also quite a good size store (they use all but the very right hand part, though that may be storage area as well - but at night it is dark while the rest is lit up).

A new Dollar Tree opened in Southington last year. When they moved into the old Joanne's they more than doubled their space. The orignal Dollar Tree in Southington is where I first saw the store. The store(s) is located in the Ame's Plaza. The new one had The Dollar Tree Radio Network and scanning technology. The old one didn't. The old one played a regular radio station ususally Lite 100.5 and things had to be rung up by hand.

I found it easier to go there when I DON'T need something, then if I see something, I can just grab it, rather than looking for it and NOT finding it...It's a great place to buy spices though...Cheaper than Big Lots, even when I still got my discount there...

Dollar Tree is going to be opening in Newington CT in the near future.

It will be located in Jo Ann's plaza (JoAnn Etc, Big Lots, Chuck E Cheese plaza) on the Berlin Turnpike where a billiards club (Lefty Magoos) was. I had no idea it was planning on opening here as there is another Dollar Tree in Wethersfield along the turnpike. I literally just saw the Dollar Tree sign on the pylon sign for the plaza. Later, I drove by the storefront and they already did interior work and shelving. You wouldn't even know it was a billiards club. This particular storefront is even green like the Dollar Tree design. There is no merchandise in the store as of yet. They will be having a job fair next Thursday (10/2).

I haven't heard of any news on an opening date. This is fabulous because I love Dollar Tree.

I love the Frozen Food section at the one in Southington. You can get a lot of good eats cheap. Just stay away from the generic cheese slices they sell (they taste like the cellophane they wrap the slices in) and stay away from the frozen strawberries. (My mom says they smelled like rotten potatoes). The store in Bristol isn't allowed to have a frozen food section because of Stop & Shop. This is in their lease.

I love Dollar Tree. I frequent the new Newington store often. I love their food items. You can get rainbow sprinkles for $1 and a huge bag of popcorn for $1. Their health and beauty selection is impressive as well.

My mom liked that they had Valentine's balloons in the shape of a rose for $1.

At times, the store is picked over, however they re-stock it and it's all good. I'm very happy Dollar Tree decided to open in town. Unfortuneatly, parking is horrendous in the JoAnn plaza lot, especially in the winter when there are snow banks covering parking spaces.

I'm BAAAAAAACK!!! as for DT in malls representing a dying mall...nope. DT in Westmoreland Mall has been there at least as long as I've been going there, and we're talking about 10 years..? I found in that store, the particular antacids my husband is forced to take, for a buck. Come on now...and my Sudoku puzzle books, I buy 5 at a time, different ones lol Also, once a month, toilet paper, paper towels, batteries if we need them, misc. snacky stuff that I like, like the canned cheetos and beef sticks, my antibacterial soap, bubble bath, the list goes on...once a month, whatever we need, first stop is DT. if it's not there, THEN we cave and go to Wal-mart. Most of the times I go to this particular DT, it's PACKED. Tons of people shop there, the mall is FAR from dying,...I could probably count on one hand the number of empty stores right now. LONG LIVE DOLLAR TREE!!! hehe...it's great to be back...

Dollar Tree is officially coming to the Pine Tree Shopping Center in Portland, ME at the site of the former Mardens (which relocated to the old, pre-Supercenter Walmart in Scarborough.)  No OSJL for me, alas... :(

Edit 9/30: According to the construction permit posted outside Dollar Tree is going to occupy one third of the old Marden's space.

Edit 10/24: The walls are up, the shelving is up, the decor is installed, and the shelves are being stocked.  Dollar Tree opens 10/29.

Yea, that post is like 6 years old, but technically there are "super" Dollar Tree stores, but they're called Deal$.  Have most of what Dollar Tree sells plus they have more expensive merchandise (and a larger food section) that they can't sell for the one-dollar price point.

Some of the Dollar Tree stores around here and what they used to be. Pics to come...

* Sheffield Village, OH - Sheffield Crossing plaza - formerly "Just For You Cards & Gifts" card shop and, I think, "Sips & Nibbles" cafe - occupies a corner space in the plaza
* Elyria, OH - Cleveland Street - occupies a portion of what used to be a Hills-turned-Ames; is rather large, in comparison to other locations in the area; is, pretty much, only tenant in entire plaza now, with the vacancy of Tops and, later, Giant Eagle; neighboring RentWay closed down as well; only other plaza tenants are a Best Cuts and a Fast Cash Express Tax store
* Elyria, OH - Midway Mall/River Street Square - Deal$ occupies 1/2 of the former Sun Super Saving Center, with Avenue and BW-3 occupying the rest of the building; Dollar Tree started in the mall, then moved to RSS upon the closure of Odd Job, which was in the space previously occupied by Just Closeouts; mall location converted (read: Dollar Tree's signage was removed, but that was IT) into an off-name store called "A Dollar"
* Oberlin, OH - old Ames at Route 20 and Route 58 - The old Ames has been refitted into a shopping center, housing Dollar Tree in the far-right portion of the building. Other tenants include "The Shoe Dept." Ames is next to a smaller Walmart Supercenter, and, if I remember correctly, survived the first bankruptcy, maintaining its red exterior sign until the "green" look took over when they bought Hills. I guess being out in the middle of nowhere helped it to survive the first round of closings!
* North Olmsted, OH - by Great Northern Mall - occupies a space in a plaza anchored by Babies "R" Us, which used to be a BEST.
* Amherst, OH - occupies a new-construction plaza space next to an Aldi's; plaza is located next to a rather large Giant Eagle grocery store (which swallowed the neighboring CVS/pharmacy and converted it into "The Drug Store," walling over the front and adding the Drive-Thru Pharmacy area)
* Middleburg Hts., OH - Southland Plaza - I think it's still where it used to be, in a space previously occupied by a CVS/pharmacy in a strip of the plaza facing Pearl Road; It's been a while since I was out that way, so there's a good chance that it's not there anymore...
* Parma, OH - Parmatown Mall - I know there used to be one in the Day Drive Plaza, sandwiched between Kids "R" Us and Rini Rego Stop-n-Shop, but I think it's closed/moved since then.

The Dollar Tree in Sheffield Village, Ohio, which is currently in the Sheffield Crossing plaza in a space once occupied by 2-3 different vendors, is MOVING! The exterior signage is up at the nearby old Carpet & Tile Liquidators building down the street.

Good luck getting to the new location. Being on a heavily-trafficked area by the local college, it's a pain to turn left into and out of ANYTHING on N Abbe Road in that area. I doubt that they'll have two locations within a mile of each other, so it's evident that they're going to be moving. Granted, it's a much larger - and freestanding - building that's only been home to a carpet place and a couple little 'resale events,' but the access is much more restricted.

The current location, when the plaza first opened, started out as a Just For You Cards & Gifts store, a Sips & Nibbles eatery, and - I think - one other storefront, but I could be wrong on that 'third storefront' thing.

Dollar Tree is opening soon in Plainville, Connecticut. It will be located in The Plainville Commons shopping center on New Britain ave in a portion of the old Linens N Things. With the opening of Dollar Tree there will be one vacancy in this massive shopping center and it too is part of the old Linens N Things.

The New Dollar Tree in Plainville, Connecticut is open. It's really nice. Much nicer than their 9 year old store in Southington which as of yesterday had a major problem with the roof leaking. The one in Plainville doesn't have carpet. It has flooring like their sister store Deal$.

Curious as those stores have rather different formats.
Though I suppose efficiencies gained in sharing the supply chain may benefit both.

If not this could be a mini version of the Ames-Zayre train wreck.

Would make sense as the Deals stores are somewhat limited (at least in this area) and they are much more similar to a Family $ type (with multi price points).

EIGHT AND A HALF BILLION DOLLARS...  :o

I'd be all for expanding the "Deal$" brand, but those should be in larger stores, IMO. I've been to two different ones - one that was built in half of an old Sun TV store, and another that was clearly an old-form Dollar Tree that had a new logo and some new signage put up in a past life - and the one in the old Sun TV was nicer to walk through. The smaller one was rather cramped.

The downside? Less competition in the "Dollar"-store market.

The upside? Those run-down dingy Family Dollar stores will either be extensively renovated/sanitized or relocated to new buildings.

That would be a smart move IMO, in that the general public seems to have Dollar General and Family Dollar
thoroughly confused, which causes people to refer to them interchangeably.

I have long noted that Family Dollar has stores in some of the roughest areas of Pittsburgh.
Particularly a neighborhood called Mount Oliver (for which the French Government actually put out
an official travel warning to their citizens not to go there!)

I noted recently that a Dollar Tree has just opened for business a few blocks up the street
from the Mount Oliver Family Dollar store.   Hmmmmmm....... ???

I think the Deal$ banner is a goner, to be replaced by either Family Dollar or Dollar Tree depending on location. Dollar Tree has already indicated that some DT locations could flip to FD and vice versa. Think about it: Family Dollar is much more ubiquitous, and it doesn't make sense to operate three banners when they can operate two instead.

You go with the name that is more known, so I would think Family Dollar would be kept.
Also there's 8,100+ family dollars as opposed to only around 200 Deal$ stores, so yea it would make sense to just keep the Family Dollar name as that would be alot of money to change all those family dollars to deal$.

The Dollar Tree in Elmwood/West Hartford which opened a few years ago has the cement flooring. Last time I went to the one in Newington, they had the carpeting. The carpeting gets worn out after a while. To add to that, Dollar Tree personnel must not maintain carpets regularly.

Yesterday I was in Dollar Tree at the Brentwood Town Centre near Pittsburgh.
They had a sign on the door announcing they were hiring for the new Bethel Park location.

Dollar Tree has long had a store in Bethel Park, in the Walmart plaza on Route 88
between Giant Eagle and Pep Boys.  It is an older format store (long single aisle runs, no
refrigerated foods section, etc.).

I asked the manager and apparently that store is moving about 1/4 mile down the road
to the South Park Shops.   I presume into a space that was vacated by a local dollar store
chain called $1.00 Stuff that went out of business earlier this year.

I presume this will give them the room to add a refrigerated section like the other newer stores.
Though this location has much more difficult access (the entrance to a huge county park just
ahead makes it very difficult to make a left turn), and that shopping center does not draw nearly
the traffic as Walmart's plaza.

According to the list three Tampa stores will have to be divested; who knows how many will succeed as Dollar Express stores? Consider the math: According to Wikipedia there are 8,100 Family Dollar stores and 4,900 Dollar Tree stores. Subtract 330 divestitures and the combined DT/FD still has 12,670 stores. How are 330 stores going to effectively compete?

Just depends on who is running them and how much they know about it.  After all, there are still some independent $ stores out there and other small chains (like Just a Buck here in parts of NY) so they could work, assuming those in charge know what they are doing.  Also they might be able to get deals on some things that the bigger chains wouldn't want (like a closeout on something with only a small quantity that would be too little for 10,000+ stores but just fine for 300+).

The combined Dollar Tree/Family Dollar has to sell only 330 Family Dollar locations to Sycamore Partners.

According to the FTC, “discount general merchandise retail stores” refers to dollar stores and the retailer Walmart.  The term “dollar stores” as used here includes stores operated by Respondents, Dollar General, 99 Cents Only, and
Fred’s Super Dollar. Independently-owned retailers that sell discounted merchandise at the $1 or multi-price point
in substantially smaller stores are not included

In Philadelphia, 5 Family Dollar locations has to sold.

And oddly enough, they are being taken over by a company who is calling the divested locations 'Dollar Express'. Dollar Express was also the name of a Philadelphia area dollar store chain (along with card & gift stores called 'Spains' that were usually next to the Dollar Express stores) that Dollar Tree acquired in the early 2000's.

I wonder what they're looking at, when they decide which stores to close. Will they close stores in 'depressed' areas, rundown buildings, or would the closures be to get rid of two stores in the immediate vicinity of each other? Closing down just 4 stores (I presume that the closures would be a combination of DT and FD stores, and not just one branding) in the entire Cleveland market is surprising.

This new store does go back on both the "Dollar Tree" signage side and the "dollar Tree" logo signage side.  this location used to be House of Fabrics (the "Dollar tree" signage side) and Q-Ball, which was a billards hall (on the "Dollar Tree" logo signage side)

As mentioned on the Family Dollar thread the Family Dollar that opened in Southington in 2013 became Dollar Tree. This is Southington's second Dollar Tree. I finally had a chance to go there and it's much nicer than the other Dollar Tree in town which took over the old Joann's in 2005.

Since Deals was similar to Family Dollar it's not surprising that they did this. Mom and I went to the Meriden Square Mall on Friday (8/19) and it was the first time I saw Deals rebranded as Dollar Tree in the adjacent Chamberlain Plaza. They still have the shopping carts and hand baskets from Deals.

In NE Philadelphia, there was a Family Dollar (in a former Food Fair) store that was near a Dollar Tree (in the former Holme Theatre) and a Deals store (in a portion of an former A&P).  Dollar Tree has since closed the Family Dollar store, and the dollar Tree store that was south of the Family Dollar, and converted the Deals store to Family Dollar.  All 3 stores were/are located on Frankford Avenue

How many freestanding locations do they have? There's a freestanding location on Route 10 (South Main Street) in Cheshire, Connecticut.

Not sure. I know there's one in Geneva, NY that's also freestanding. They seem older, and have the "Everything's $1" decor inside.

We had a couple here.  Both built as Dollar Tree and not terribly old.

One location moved up the road a bit into a plaza with a couple others stores (PetSmart, shoe store and I think TJ Maxx) which is part of a development with Walmart, Lowes and Kohl's (those large stores are farther from the road, with the building with Dollar Tree and several other smaller buildings closer to the road).

The other one closed when the landlord raised the rent to be too high for them and still remains empty today (this was one of two freestanding buildings, the other being a bank, in a plaza with a Hannaford and several smaller stores attached to that).

Is the first example Hudson by any chance? I know they had a location similar to the Geneva one near the Greenport Towne Center that is soon to be an O'Reilly Auto Parts. The way you describe the replacement location sounds like it.

I believe they're both early 2000s builds due to the fact they both have plastic United carts (Geneva's are 2001 units and Hudson's are from 2002, meaning they transferred the carts to the new one).

Yes it is!  Interesting choice on replacement, as that chain hasn't been in the area, but also that there is another auto parts store on the other side of the entry to the plaza, which seems a bit much.

Dollarama up in Canada used to be all for a dollar but gradually switched to higher price points. Today the stores feels more and more like a Big Lots without furniture, small appliances and bigger items. Not much is a dollar anymore.

Meanwhile, Dollar Tree Canada markets itself as having everything at $1.25

One might suspect that is just to offset the currency variation (as $1.25 Canadian is close to $1 US most of the time recently).

Indeed, plus to offset the higher minimum wage and benefits and all overall costs I'm sure.

I think they should sell everything at prices ranging from $1.00 to $5.00, just like Five Below, but for a much older demographic. Maybe Dollar Tree should change their slogan to "Everything's $1 to $5" and sell everything at those price points.

Some items they have simply quit selling because it could not be done profitably at the one dollar price point. 7lb. bags of cat litter for example.  Used to buy them all the time but they no longer stock it.  I'd still buy it at $1.25 because that's still cheaper than you can find most other places.

This is now one of two Dollar Tree stores in Vernon, CT! Since they & Family Dollar bond together in business, it makes sense to have a Dollar Tree & Family Dollar in the same plaza. In this case, there's a combination in the Rockville section of Vernon in the Windsor Avenue plaza (next to the former Veggie World (soon to be occupied by the Rockville Pharmacy, a local pharmacy moving out of their original store on West Main St. in downtown Rockville across the street on high-end from those historic buildings), so that makes two businesses come along the path this year).

Here's this Family Dollar next to the newer Dollar Tree (post shown above!) in the Windsor Avenue plaza.

BTW, The Dollar Tree recently moved here from the Ellington store which was next to Big Y. Now at this plaza, it's a two-in-one dollar plaza!

They did mine too. Added that "snack center" to the middle of the store. Nasty crap carpet is still there.

Interesting. At the Dollar Tree in Queen Plaza* in Southington, CT the town where I live, the Dollar Tree they removed the carpeting a few years back and replaced it with flooring. The other Dollar Tree in downtown Southington** had flooring from the beginning. That location was a Family Dollar that opened in 2013 and was converted to Dollar Tree shortly after the merger of Dollar Tree and Family Dollar was completed.

The Dollar Tree in Bristol, CT, which has been open for close to 20 years at this point - a former CVS still has carpeting.

*Dollar Tree in Queen Plaza has been open more than 20 years. They started in a small 4,500 Square Foot Space that is now Anytime Fitness. In 2005 they moved into a 10,000 Square Foot spot in the same plaza that had previously had been a Joann's.*** When they moved into that space is when they started selling frozen food and dairy products.

**The downtown Soutington Dollar Tree location has been many things going back to the 70s.

Guido's Supermarket. - I don't know if they also used the space that is currently a Chinese Takeout Restaurant and a Dominos.
CVS/Pharmacy.  - They built a freestanding building nearby.
Blockbuster Video - They relocated from Southington Square a small plaza on Queen Street and they didn't use all of the Guido's space. I think the part they didn't used was eventually fire damaged. Their Southington Square location is now a Mattress Firm, which previously used the name Sleepy's.
Family Dollar - opened in 2013. They gutted the building and used all the space.

***Joann's would return to Southington in 2014. At 20,000 Square Feet their new store is double the size of their original Southington location. It's in ShopRite Plaza in the former Bernie's. The Southington store replaced a small store of under 10,000 Square feet in the plaza with Big Lots in Bristol, CT.

The one in the Delaware Plaza in Delmar, NY is quite the classic. No refrigeration coolers and still has the pink-and-green pastel paint scheme inside. Additionally contains Rehrig shopping carts without vertical poles (appears to have had them in the past).

Meanwhile in Latham, they moved out of their smaller, classic location in Latham Farms and moved into the former Eckerd/Rite Aid on Troy-Schenectady Road. Flooring is concrete with tile markings intact and original Eckerd lighting is intact. Also uses former ShopKo carts, which is an unusual choice for Dollar Tree since they don't re-use carts from other retailers. Might have set a new precedent.

Good to see they found a better spot there - that store was pretty small compared to most.  Although I'm not sure why they went as far as they did, unless that was the only thing that was available in their price range (had they waited a bit they might have been able to just go across the street into the AC Moore spot).

No surprise there, given how many stores were subleased following the failed Rite Aid acquisition.

Definitely much better than that store they had in Latham Farms which was quite tiny (had to be one they got from some other dollar store chain, as it was more like those you say in the 1990's with about 4 or 5 aisles at most).

Yes, it is that store. Quite frankly, it seems rather redundant for them to have opened another store in the area, considering they have the Troy-Schenectady location which opened three years ago. This one appears to be a recent opening.

Knowing that a chain called Only $One was based in New York that Dollar Tree acquired in 1999, is it possible that many of these older, smaller stores were their former stores? The only problem with that is stores like the old Latham and Delmar stores had the pastel green/pink color scheme, which was replaced with the red "Everything's $1" decor around 1999 or 2000.

Probably not an issue - they have two in the East Greenbush/North Greenbush area as well (one is on Route 4 near Target, the other on 9/20 by Market 32).  Plus, one in Rensselaer that started as a Family Dollar shortly before the merger, then switched to Dollar Tree (which made no sense, given the other two near enough and that with less stores in Rensselaer, having the option to sell at all price levels made for more options of what to offer).
I know if I was in Latham, I wouldn't necessarily go out towards Schenectady (that other store is just about at the border, in the old drug store, if I remember correctly), so having one closer to other retail there is probably logical.

That purchase of another chain makes sense - remember the Delmar store being smaller as well, not sure that one ever moved/changed but may just be a lack of places to go out there.
