Aldi's locations are pretty scattered. I really don't know how many they have or what states they are in. They are a discount grocer sort of like "Sav-A-Lot", but from what I hear they sell much higher quality prodcuts. (They also sell a large selection of electronics from Germany--they are a german company). I believe you have to pay a quarter for a cart (get it back when its returned), you have to pay extra for bags or bring your own, and they only take Debit cards or cash. Most stuff they sell is their own private brands, but some things are name brand.

"In the U.S., ALDI Inc. operates over 700 stores in 26 states." <-From Aldi's website.
Aldi also owns Trader Joe's, which sells gormet/health foods, but at  Aldi-like prices. They have stores on both of the coast's.

Aldi is allllll over the world. You can bring you own boxes or bags but you can also buy plastic bags for 10 cents, paper bags for 5 cents or grab any empty box around the store. Then bag your own stuff at the bagging counter.

Aldi isn't like Shop Rite or Price Chopper. They are a discount supermarkets. They prices like 50 cents for canned goods. They also have items like Tvs and VCRs and microwaves and bike and computers, ect. that are cheaper brands like Crofton and Tevion.

I am familiar with Aldi's. We have one in Huntington. I personally don't like them. They are cheap and their quality is crap. I don't like Save A Lot either! I prefer Kroger or FoodFair.. You honestly get what you pay for with these types of stores.

Here's a shot of the Aldi's store in Rensselaer.  This is a freestanding, built from scratch store - nothing unusual there.

The site it sits on, however, is a portion of the former Joy Store - a local chain with stores in Rensselaer, Glens Falls, and Clifton Park, plus about 10 Toys (R) (Are) (For) Joy stores (the name was changed several times due to Toys R Us complaints) - one near each of the dept. stores and others in various spots.  Started in the 50's, all closed in the early-mid 90's - similar to an older Kmart or 5 and 10 type store - the Rensselaer one was expanded 3 or 4 times over the years.

Here's the Hudson (Greenport) location on Route 9.  As noted elsewhere, this was a former A&P which Aldi uses only a part of (Advance Auto has the other part).

This was one of the first (maybe THE first) Aldi to open in the area (you won't find any in Albany or Rensselaer county EXCEPT the one I posted above since these two counties still require item pricing which Aldi refused to do - the Rensselaer got around it by being a city which has a weights & measures dept. that could set it's own rules - They do have one of those check price scanners for customers).

I don't want to sound "stupid" but, what does that mean?  In every Aldi I have been, the price for the goods were posted above the product.  Does it mean that the price has to be physically on the item??  Thanks in advance for the help!!

You got it Bossman, and no this is not sounding stupid, because I actually learned something here too. So that explains why the Hannafords in that area are still pricing. We had heard of that, and thought it was insane. Our store gave up pricing items around 2000 I believe, and it sped stocking times up immensely. In this day and age, pricing is outdated. I can see if an item is being tied into another area or department, that that item should be priced. Also the use of the Price Scanners around the store helps to alleviate other price issues when for example, a shelf tag is lost, or an item is on display without a price sign. Plus with the advancement of the POS (Point of Sale) Systems, accuracy of item prices are well above what they were in the past.

I clearly can see why Aldis wouldn't want to venture in there.

Thanks, it just sounded weird that the city/town would require a store to price each individual item, when most stores have those price scanners scattered around the store.
Title: ALDI FOODS
Post by: BillyGr on March 16, 2006, 09:14:41 PM
Yep - you got it right - they are still (supposed to) put a tag on each item (there are some exceptions if I remember correctly for certain "basic" items).  NY State had a similar law that expired several years ago, but for some reason these two counties continued their versions (or at least had).
As I said, the city of Rensselaer found that loophole since they were the only ones in the county that had the "weights and measures" or whatever they called it dept. they could work around it by having the customer scanner and random checks.
I know the bigger chains (Hannaford, Price Chopper) weren't happy about it, but the only reason it came up (probably) wa that the city had tried to attract a grocery store for quite a few years, and none of the major stores was interested.
I'm not quite sure how the Save A Lot in Menands (Albany County) got in as they are ususally the same set-up as an Aldi (with the signs and whatnot).

The only good thing (for the customers, anyway) is that you can sometimes get a free item (when they put the wrong tag on a item, since the bigger stores advertise the "If it scans wrong, it's free" program).

Aldi's reminds me of a giant convience store. The nearest one to me is on the corner of Route 229 and Pine Street in Bristol, CT. They ripped down the former Grossman's Home Impovement Store to build it.  I think it's cool that their cashiers get to sit down while they work. I can't tell you how many times in the 3 months I was a cashier at Shaw's I wanted to sit down.

Aldi probably allows their employees do things most stores don't because of what Aldi is all about bare essentials. Aldi is a store which does not emphasize image or glamour that most stores like Stop & Shop, and Shaw's live by. If you shop Aldi, you know what you're getting: thrift. You know this when you see that their store designs are very insipid with old orange/brown interiors, pallet filled floors, looking almost like a third world market, self-bagging groceries. Conveniences like shopping carts, and bags you pay extra for at Aldi as well. This is how they keep their prices so low - by cutting non-essential costs most supermarkets offer as conveniences.

If you've ever seen an Aldi store, you might've also noticed they close early (8PM) and they're also closed on Sundays. Note how their efficient pay-shopping cart system works and their property always clean and orderly.

Cart Deposits work so well on Shopping Carts. People are so concerned with getting their quarters back, that they will return the cart to the corral. My store used to have them, and did away with them earlier this year. Practically overnight, the parking lot went from very tidy, to carts being left all over the place.

Just about every market in the early 90's switched to the quarter things on the carts but most were dumped after only a few years..I wonder why.
Title: ALDI FOODS
Post by: powersbt on August 21, 2006, 06:15:19 PM
The reason why my store dumped theres is because the manufacturer of the Cart Locks went out of Business so to get replacement parts, etc. was impossible. They did have their disadvantages. Many people felt that they shouldn't have to "pay" to get a shopping cart.

The Aldi's here in Greensburg, PA uses the quarter cart system which keeps the lots clearer and makes plowing in winter time easier. They use the signage system inside the stores, and the layout of the store keeps the front doors blocked on the side so that once you're in you can't get out without walking through the check-out area. They charge for bags, but the boxes are free, and the cashiers usually take time when they can to collect from the pallets in the aisles just like Save-A-Lot does. Yes, we have one of those too, I used to work there. And it sucked big time. Horrible benefits, not worth getting when you're only part time, crappy hours, dirty looking store. The manager was a jack-off, the 2nd in charge is now currently my very best friend, we became friends right before I quit there. I tried to get a job in Aldi's but they never called. I guess 13 years in retail just doesn't qualify me for a position...

Aldi is supposedly moving into Rhode Island. They are taking over several markets that have been vacant for years. 2 aren't in the best of areas and the others are in blue collar neighborhoods. I've never heard of this chain before, from what I can tell they are like a Price Rite or Sav-A-Lot.

The Aldi in Rumford RI opened a couple of weeks ago. It is in the former Ocean State Job Lot (itself a former Grants) in the Gansett Plaza. The building has actually been divided. 2/3 are the Aldi, the remaining 1/3 is vacant. Market was pretty busy for a Sunday. I don't see the big deal. The market carries nothing of what I usually buy. Guess I'll do my shopping at the Stop and Shop nearby.

According to the planning documents it's just to the left of NAMCO and to the right of Sovereign Bank (which is relocating its HQ from PA to MA.) The Stateline Shopping Center, by the way, fully lives up to its name; part of the parking lot is actually in Methuen, MA!  They're already hiring for the new store. I wonder if they'll cannibalize Market Basket or finish off Shaw's...

Prices seem to vary by location. For example I've seen some products more expensive at the Aldi's in Bristol, Connecticut down the street from where I live than at the Waterbury Aldi's. Maybe because Bristol and Waterbury have very different demographics. A lot of people in Waterbury are poorer than the people who live in Bristol. (I'm sure there's a better way to phrase that, but I'm too tired to think of it).

Honestly, what were you expecting of the selection of products at an ALDI store?  This is how they and Save-A-Lot operate. Can't speak to the lack of business on the second night of business, but they were mobbed on opening day:

I was'nt expecting any thing more than what i found but i don't see the logic of a store
like that in this area.
The saving's were not enough to justify the extra inconvenice.
Many better choices in this area.

I shop at Aldi on occasion (every few weeks) and love it! I am not one for name brands anyway, so that part didn't scare me away. Just about everything I have bought has been equal or better than the name brand. They also have a neat selection of imported (German) candy and the like. The basic items are significantly cheaper than the other grocery stores (although Wegmans still has them beat on some things). If you need to stock up on ketchup/mustard/jelly/etc., Aldi is hard to beat for the basics. Here, 99 cents for a loaf of wheat bread, 43 cents/lb. bananas,  and 89 cents for dozen eggs are the lowest around. You obviously cannot do a full shopping trip here, and still not sure I would buy the fresh meat offerings, but you can really save if you aren't too picky. You do have to "rent" a shopping cart, bag your own groceries, and they only take cash or debit cards, but it really isn't too much of a hassle.

Having two Market Baskets really spoils Salem. I have relatives there and they didn't know how Aldi worked until I told them which shows that unlike NYC/DC Aldi didn't drive people nuts with promotional stuff.

Seriously, they built there because they can take from the NH base and also get their traditional base from across the border (think Lawrence/Haverhill) and that land is cheaper. Add in the ease of selling beer and wine...

Yeah, don't dismiss the beer & wine aspect; that's part of the reason why Trader Joe's is moving their Tyngsboro, MA store over the state line to Nashua, NH.

I love Aldi's. In the area I live in, it's directly across the highway from Giant Eagle, and up the road is Shop N Save. No inconvenience here for me, only because if I'm up that way for one thing, it's not taking anything from me to go the extra minute of drive-time to grab something needed from Aldi's. And I get the hamburger in the pouch thing, actually eating one now lol delicious. For the most part, I get meats from Giant Eagle though. But basics, condiments, cat food and litter, eggs, tater tots/fries, cases of soda and water, cereal for my non-picky kids, (I'm picky, I like my Lucky Charms), cans of tuna, just general stuff, I get mostly there. What I can't get there, I go to Giant Eagle for. Once in a blue moon Shop N Save depending on the weekly sale, Wacky Wednesday specials, and 2 day sales. I am majorly on a budget, so it's really good for my family...and one other thing. At Christmas time, Easter, things like that, you really can't beat their prices for the cookie decorating supplies.........

I've noticed from time to time the prices on some items vary by store. And they are more money at the Reidville Drive store in Waterbury compared to the other location.

They just put one in Westminster, md not long ago it took up part of the old super-fresh along with petco and sweet frog frozen yogurt. There is something very German about the way they are laid out and organized.
Extremely efficient layouts and systems.

Virtually all of their freight can be pallet-dropped, minimizing the need to stock shelves.
I have seen them operate this store quite well, on a very busy day, with no more than
six employees.

Marlton, NJ has both a Trader Joe's and Aldi, but the two are at opposite ends of town. A former Genuardi's near the Trader Joe's is becoming a gourmet family-owned supermarket soon but I forget the name of it. This Genuardi's closed very soon after the Super Fresh in Marlton also closed. It's so weird the two coexisted for so long and closed at the same time. This Super Fresh was very small, out of date, and run down by the time it closed. Before Super Fresh it was one of the last A&P stores opened in the southern half of NJ before A&P left the area, open from 1975 to 1982.

I noticed a long time ago that the coconut shrimp (they have the name "Sea Queen") sold at Aldi were made in China. As of recent years China has been in the news for food poisoning and food recalls several times. So therefore I would avoid buying food from China, except for maybe what one finds at an Asian supermarket in the USA or anywhere else outside China. Maybe if I found food such as seafood at a gourmet market that were a Chinese product I would trust it, but any food that would appear to be made in China to cut costs (such as no-name canned food at dollar stores) would definitely worry me because obviously the quality would be as low as it could get, and this would probably extend to health/safety standards.

What I've noticed, at least in the Philadelphia area, is that 95% of the Aldi's built from the ground up, the lone exception is the Aldi at Grant Avenue & Acamdey Road, in the NE section of the city.  This particular Aldi started out as a Food Fair/Pantry Pride, then became a Shop 'n' Bag, before finally becoming a Aldi.

Quite the opposite: http://hauppauge.patch.com/groups/business-news/p/trader-joes-to-move-closer-to-competitor

Funny stuff happens when companies jockey for position near a huge shopping destination like Smithhaven Mall. There's Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, Aldi, Waldbaum's and a (soon to be open) Fairway. Stop & Shop had a store in the same shopping center that Fairway's going into (but not the same spot), but closed it a few years ago as it was a ratty non-Super store unlike the nearby South Setauket store.

Bristol, CT was built from the ground up where Grossman's was.

New Britain, CT is in the old IGA on Farmington Ave in the plaza next to a vacant Walmart. This spot was always a grocery store. It was a location of the New Britain based Sussman's chain back in the day. In fact I think the Sussman Family still owns the plaza.
Title: Re: ALDI FOODS

The problem with Aldi  being next to The empty Walmart in New Britain is, it will prevent a future owner of the Walmart property from putting a supermarket there. In the city of New Britain they have a rule on the books that 2 grocery stores/supermarkets can't be side by side. Since New Britain is desperate to bring businesses (and job and people) to the city I'm sure that a future owner of The Walmart Property can go before the New Britain Planning and Zoning Commission and get a wavier to put a Supermarket in that building. The rule about not allowing two groceries stores side by side brings me to this story.

City Councilors in Bristol did not want Price Chopper to open in the old KMART (which was the old Caldor) because it was right next to Shaw's. Price Chopper and the landlord were planning on suing the city. Not wanting to be sued, the city caved and let Price Chopper open. PC opened in January 2004 and business went down at Shaw's. Eventually it picked back up, but not to the pre Price Chopper levels and Shaw's closed their doors in July 2009 which was before Shaw's pulled out of Connecticut all together. In July 2013 a Walmart Neighborhood Market opened in the old Shaw's, but it's not doing that well. Personally I like it. It's nothing like Walmart.

When Walmart went into the former Hills and Ames location in Heidelberg, PA, they voluntarily agreed not to
build a Super Walmart there because there was already an established supermarket operating in the same plaza.

But every time I go in there they seem to be sneaking more and more food into the mix.  The whole front
of the store is pretty much grocery by now, including quite a few dairy and freezer cases.

Learned another little secret about Aldi Foods.

I stopped by there last night to do some shopping on the way home.
This morning I could not find my office keys.  I had apparently dropped them
while in the store.

Picked up my phone and started surfing for the phone number of the local store.
After several minutes was unable to find it.   I called 411 and they connected me to some
toll-free "855" number, which was a recording announcing to me that....

...due to our streamlined efficiency process, which allows us to provide lower prices to you,
the individual phone numbers of all Aldi stores are unlisted."

So I had to go down, sit in the parking lot until 9AM when they opened to go in
and get my keys.   Made me late for work.

Ordinarily I am a great admirer of their "streamlined efficiency process", but in this case
I believe they outsmarted themselves.

The Marlton Aldi and Marlton Trader Joes are fairly close. They are on different roads, however. The Marlton retail area is pretty small actually, and it's quite easy to drive from Aldi to Trader Joes and vice versa.

Bottom Dollar Food also had a location in Marlton, but Aldi didn't need it because it had a freestanding built from ground up store that it opened not too long prior in a plaza with Staples (which was there for many years). Even if Aldi didn't have that location built, I'm not sure Aldi would have assumed Bottom Dollar's location. Crispin Square, where Bottom Dollar Food was anchor, is off smaller roads more tucked near residential areas. I figured it was a rather strange location for Bottom Dollar Food. I think it was an IGA many years ago, but it sat vacant for a long time. Now again, it's vacant and might be for a long time, although a Dollar General or Family Dollar might fit in there, even though the demographics of the Marlton-Mt.Laurel border area aren't generally fitting with those demographics. Dollar Tree actually lacks a location in Marlton entirely as well, but Dollar Tree might want a more highway accessible and visible location.

They're great for food, except their produce isn't the best.  Buyer beware on the rest of the stuff, as tokensafari said.  We've bought pans and knife sets from there.  The pans are good for about a year before they lose their teflon coating and the knives retain water in the handles...you only THOUGHT the knives were dry until you went to put them away...

That is one area where Bottom Dollar did a better job than Aldi......produce.

Bottom Dollar had walk-in refrigerated rooms that kept the produce fresher.
Aldi just dumps them out on pallets near the dairy cases.

Aldi made a mistake in tearing out the refrigerated rooms in the Bottom Dollar

Were there minimal impact migrations of Bottom Dollar to Aldi, with just that done or a few changes?

I have only been to one Bottom Dollar convert to Aldi store, and it was totally re-done towards Aldi's formatting. This was unlike traditional grocery store replacements.

It was more like Whole Foods moving into a former Pathmark space, Southwest buying AirTran and gutting everything AirTran on the 737 airplanes, where everything was re-done.

I agree that the refrigerated rooms were unique and probably a good feature of Bottom Dollar, but it likely was that Aldi viewed it as an inconsistency towards their model.

Lidl stores will be considerably larger than Aldi, which means a deeper selection of product. I think they're going to try to bridge the gap between the hard discounters like Aldi and traditional supermarkets like Kroger.

The last few months they've been working the land, putting in pipes, etc. This is going to be a part of a development including Chipotle and Chick Fil A. Now the owner of this developement is looking at redeveloping the adjacent former 7-Eleven and 2 houses (the last 2 on Queen Street) that he owns next to the former 7-Eleven.

The new logo does away with the box-within-a-box and the stylized "A" is curved at the edges. It's supposed to symbolize their modernization program as well as their move upmarket. The timing of the logo change as Lidl prepares to establish itself in the US can't be ignored, either.

Yeah, we're getting an Aldi in Southington. It's going to sell beer too. I did change my name again. I've got a lot going on. Not good. (including a mental break down). Jon made me a moderator on here again in January. After spending a couple months doing maintenance on the forum, I stepped down as a moderator although my name is still listed as a staff member. Jon is pretty much in charge of the forum now. I don't know if any of the other mods are still around. Chris still owns the site and owns the domain, but he's busy with his wife and two kids.

The Aldi over by where I work - Sheffield Village, OH - is getting a complete makeover/expansion. They've added onto the back and removed what was the front entrance area, overhead sign and all. There's a temporary entrance set up on one side - I thought it was closed until I saw someone leaving with bags in her hand - but, wow, whatever's going on must be MASSIVE. It should be very nice when it's finished!

The aldi's store near me was put into a former super fresh back in 2012 they completely remodeled the space, the building was gutted and rebuilt on the inside. Four years later in the end of 2016 they remodeled the store again they kept the same coolers and exterior but repainted the whole store added all new signs, shelves, and rearranged the layout of the store. Why they felt the need to dump so much money into a store that was only 4 years old I'm not sure but as far as the interior goes none of the stores in the area come even remotely close to looking as good as the inside of aldi.

We'd been wanting to check an Aldi out for years (a cousin in KY always bragged about them). Since a couple have opened up locally we stopped in last weekend. No thanks. To me it was just an ever so slightly more upscale Save A Lot, complete with long lines, surly help, poor selection. Hard to find anything. It seems to be popular with the type of people who think Wal*Mart is overpriced.

I haven't been to Aldi in years, so I have yet to see the newly remodeled and expanded look of their Bristol, CT store. Part of that is because I haven't had a car in 2 years. The other part is that like me my Mom doesn't like Aldi either. She was in the newly remodeled and expanded Bristol store a couple months back only because she was out with her friend and her friend wanted to stop in.

Construction on the Southington store continues chugging along. Someone I know told me they hope to open in late September/early October. It's across from ShopRite. I really don't think it will have much of an impact on ShopRite.

FROM MYRECORDJOURNAL.COM

Aldi Supermarket opens this morning on Queen Street in Southington
October 5, 2017 03:32PM
By Jesse Buchanan, Record-Journal staff

SOUTHINGTON â€" More than 100 customers, some of whom lined up at 5 a.m., poured through the Aldi Supermarket doors after the Queen Street store’s grand opening Thursday.

The grocery store is the first of three businesses under construction on a property owned by local developer John Senese. Crowds waiting for the doors to open at 9 a.m. watched construction crews make progress on a Chick-fil-A building closer to Queen Street that’s slated to open in January. The steel frame for a Chipotle Mexican Grill is also up and the restaurant could open in the first quarter of next year.

More stores and restaurants are planned for a property also owned by Senese just south on Queen Street.

Thomas Carle, a Meriden resident, was first in line Thursday morning after he showed up at 5 a.m. He and others who were first in line received gift cards.

After an inaugural shopping trip for eggs, milk, bread and a few other items, Carle said the prices had won him over.

“I will be shopping at Aldi’s,” he said. “This is half what it would have cost me (at other stores).”

Kate Sirignano, Greater Southington Chamber of Commerce chairwoman, thanked Aldi for its investment in Southington. She said many residents had been eagerly anticipating the store.

“It’s such a wonderful addition to the town of Southington,” she said. “I know everybody has been waiting for Aldi for quite some time.”

She’s an Aldi shopper and is pleased with the prices, particularly on organic items that she says run much more in other stores.

Shoppers said the closest Aldi is in Bristol and were glad to have one closer. Several said Thursday that Aldi’s prices compared favorably to other supermarkets in town.

John Salerno, owner of Tops Marketplace in Plantsville, questioned whether the town needed another grocery store and listed five in town, in addition to Walmart and Target, which both carry food.

“We have so much here,” he said. “We don’t need it.”

Salerno said he stocks Tops with local food items such as honey, syrup and pasta made in town.

“You won’t see those products in any of those chains,” he said. “We’re a local business supporting other small local businesses.”

Nicole Shannon, Aldi district manager, said the company is always trying to add more products to its stores and that the Southington store will have new items and a strong selection of organic food.

ALDI Sud operates the little ALDI stores in our country, while ALDI Nord operates the Trader Joe's supermarkets.

ALDI has stores in Germany with two distinct logos, for north and south.

ALDI both founded by Theo and Karl Albrecht, they split the company in two after after a dispute about whether or not they should sell cigarettes.

ALDI is short for Albrecht Diskont.

The Aldi by me in the Transitown Plaza at Main and Transit in Clarence has just remodeled (think this was a Brand Names at one point), changing the outside of the store to look separate from the rest of the stores.

Such a weird plaza. Half the stores are obscured by the hulking TJ Maxx (Former Hens and Kelly, then LL Berger) building, and the rest are ultra niche stores (Custom window blinds? Ski shop? Chinese clothing and knick-knacks?).

Just noted in the local paper this past week that the Aldi in Greenport (Hudson) NY may move to a newly built building if the plans for that area are OK'd.
They'd be taking out a couple houses (plus using existing land where a cleaners had been many years ago, plus the current McDonald's property) to build a new McDonalds (the current one is the mansard style and has very little space such that the drive thru is the only thing on that side of the building) and the Aldi (which would replace one in a strip plaza that was once a portion of the space of an A&P, and is probably the oldest Aldi in this area, plus one of few not freestanding), plus a couple other small spaces would be available.

The Aldi where I generally shop in Baldwin, PA is being expanded.

The place is open, but all torn-up as they are preparing to bump-out walls on
the side and in the front.  The manager told me they are planning to expand the
square footage and add "thousands of new products".

The store itself is less than ten years old.

My local ALDI is re-opening today, about a week ahead of schedule.

This construction project was truly harrowing to behold.
They had walls partially torn-down, temporary fencing blocking off
large swaths of the parking lot, heavy equipment, piles of construction
materials, guys running around in hard-hats, welding torches....
all while the store TRIED TO REMAIN OPEN!

I refused to shop there while this was going on.  Just to watch the customers,
which included old ladies with walkers and people in wheelchairs, try to traverse
that parking lot was horrifying.

We had some heavy rains which flooded the adjoining street and closed down all
of the businesses.  Thankfully someone at Aldi made the decision just to remain
closed until the construction was finished.

Shopped my local Aldi for the first time since the remodel.

Not a fan.  They painted the ceilings black and went with black fixtures.  The walls are also a darker color.  Overall they've made the store just too danged dark.

They added a significant amount of square footage but it's hard to see what they've done with it.  We were told they would add merchandise, but the counters pretty much fit the profile of the old store.  They just expanded the front end area, while inexplicably REDUCING the counter space available to bag your purchase.  Having been there on busy Saturdays I can tell you they'll regret that decision.

The prices are also noticeably higher.  I'm paying for this remodel, aren't I?
One good thing is they added a refrigerated area for some of the produce.
One of the major complaints people had against Aldi was certain produce items
having a very short shelf life after being displayed at room temperature.

Didn't say, though, if it would replace the existing one or just be a new addition.  Either could work (simply since some in the city itself would not have an easy way to get to another store).

They are also in the process of adding one on Hoosick Street in Brunswick, pretty much across from a newly built (and opening shortly) Hannaford.  That area has only had one Market 32 and Walmart since GU left the area, save a couple tries at various discount stores further down the hill in the much older PC spot, in the same plaza as a former Ames, that never lasted very well.
