I only know one The Bon-Ton location, in Concord NH at The Steeplegate Mall, the store replaced Steinbach.
There are two Bon Ton stores in Albany, in Wilton Mall, and in Latham on Route 9(former Ames).
Which was (before Ames) a Bradlees, and before that (so I have heard) it was one of those membership store (Gem, Gex or such).

oh, cool. Thanks fr the info man! So, that means the former Ames on Hoosick Street in Troy was the same? They both looked the same.
An old Bon-Ton, Looks like a 70's-80's logo:
Here's one at the Eastern hills Mall that was once an AM&A's. Built in '71.
This one was also an AM&A's, and before that, Hens & Kelley's. Built in 1961 (Can't you tell??)
the bon ton mankes me think of thoughs frozen treats named BON BON's :insane:
WHAT IS GOING ON BON TON???!!!
"The Bon Tn" -huh:P
They are going WAYYYY downhill
(sorry about the double-post, i accidentally put the above in an old post, so it counted it as an edit)
Even without the missing "O," Bon-Ton just never got up hill in my book. Ever since they bought out the AM&A's chain, they have never been a store that I enjoy shopping in. They dismanteled and de-AM&A's-ed everything about the stores ten years ago and really never seem to have caught on in WNY. Now they seem to be a hybrid of Penney's and Kaufmann's (centralized registers like JCP, and some of the same brand names like Kaufmann's has). I don't know what it is..but I am just not a Bon Ton fan!
Gift Card
HAMDEN, CT
The only Bon Ton in CT is in the Hamden Mart shopping plaza. It's sort of like a mix of Filene's and JC Penney. That particular store has a left and right side of the store with the right side considerably bigger. Ramps with glassed off mini stair cases take you from the main part of the store (women's clothes mostly) to the Men and Home Store. Home Store had a good selection of tacky clearance items but also had a good selection of the types of small appliances, domestics, and silverware one would see at a Filene's type store. They have All-Day Shopping Pass coupons and I believe you could get a good deal on something if you timed a % of sale in conjuntion with coupon esp if you sign up for their credit card and get 10% off.
BLOOMSBUG, PA
I was at a Bon Ton a few years ago in Bloomsbug at the Columbia Mall. They have at least two outside entrances and a mall entrance. Was the middle anchor of the mall, only had one floor and in a "small" mall also anchored by Sears, JC Penney, and Hills. Hills became Ames and now Ames sits vacant with its outside Ames sign still standing while the sign at the mall entrance was taken down. They blacked out the windows but I saw the store right after it closed and pretty much it was stripped down to nothing. A large shopping center moved across the highway a few miles away with WalMart and Lowe's and other stores. Some smaller stores in the mall were dependent on the mall traffic from Hills/Ames and consequently closed up. Anyways, this Bon Ton seemed more high-scale than the Hamden one was.

the bon-ton near albany is in latham. I haven't seen it yet. There are a lot I hear around Bufallo new york. There is a BOn-ton in the university mall in south burlington vermont where steinbach was and it is 60,000 square efet.
In COncord NH Bon-ton replaced the 51,000 square foot SAge Allen in november 1999 and in november 1999 it replaced 36,000 square feet of the old 53,000 square foot STeinbach.

the bon-ton is closing in the walden galleria mall. it said it is 150,000 square feet and it closes later this month!!! WHY IS IT CLOSING. IT said the one in eastern hills will be the largest when it closes!
Basically that store at Galleria never really fit the Bon-Ton's mold. For that matter, that building made no sense for Bon-Ton's predecessor, AM&A's. The building was originally built in 1989 with the rest of the mall and was designed for the upscale NYC-based chain, B Altman & Co. Very fancy marble floors and chandeliers are incorporated throughout the building. Altman's went out of business in 1989 just as the mall was opening. Signage went up on the store but the chain never actually opened up at Galleria.
Originally, AM&A's was not an anchor at the mall. They were still operating a store at the Thruway Mall down the street. AM&A's original plan was to open a Galleria store around '90 or '91 when their Thruway Mall lease expired. Instead of constructing a new building for AM&A's (I believe it was to be located in the rear of the mall where DSW/Steve & Barry's is currently), AM&A's just opted to go into the vacant Altman's space. This was a very Buffalo-chain - middle class merchandise, nothing extremely fancy. Compared to the other AM&A's locations, the Galleria store was ten times fancier.
When Bon-Ton took over in 1995, they also never fit into the mold of that location. It always seemed something was off in there. Both chains tried to make that location more upscale, at the same time alienating the thing that made the chains attractive to their core buyers, the middle class. I don't think their sales were ever that great at Galleria - and as the top shopping destination in WNY, the rent must have been much much more than their other locations (those that they don't actually own outright).
The big question is what will open in Bon-Ton's place? Everyone would love to see a Nordstrom, but I don't think the market is there to support it. H&M is located in all of the other I-90 cities (Rochester, Syracuse, Albany)...it would make sense for them to open an outlet, but even one floor of Bon-Ton would be too big. I think they need to target an upscale retailer (a la Nordstrom or maybe convince Federated to open a Bloomingdale's). Galleria doesn't really have any top-shelf anchors. Lord & Taylor is the only upscale retailer, followed by Kaufmann's (Macy's). There needs to be something high-end to balance out JCPenney and Sears.
Eastern New York doesn't have as many Bon Tons as Western New York does. There's only two locations in Albany(Latham and Saratoga), and locations in Glens Falls, Syracuse, and I think that's it for Eastern NY.
There is no The Bon-Ton by me, but when I was vacationing in the Poconos, I went to the one in the Stroud Mall in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. Pretty nice store, I guess. One floor, pretty large.

Between Macy's, JC Penney and Kohl's I don't see how yet another midscale department store can carve out a niche for itself. Certainly their dismal financials point to some problem signs. Interestingly, one of the units is becoming Von Maur, which is definitely upscale, at least compared to Bon-Ton.

How did The Bon-Ton end up with a store in Brick, NJ? And how does it manage to keep a store out there? I was looking at it's location list, and found 2 stores in NJ. One in Phillipsburg, NJ but that is near the Lehigh Valley. However, the one in Brick is totally out there, not anywhere near PA, and relative to all the other Bon Ton stores.
Regarding growth, has Bon-Ton added any new stores in the last 5 years?
If so, if Macy's closes in Voorhees, NJ which is expected, a central anchor spot will be empty at Voorhees Town Center Mall. The other anchor competitor is Boscov's. If the two operated together there, it'd be like a taste and feel of central/rural PA inside of a suburban Philly region in NJ.
The Brick Bon-Ton was one of two Steinbach stores they acquired in 2000; the other one was in downtown Red Bank and closed a few years after.
I wonder if script is coming next?

Bonton opened a store at the Maine Mall in South Portland, ME in 2013. They are a bit unusual in that they have one store each in every New England state except RI which has none. I am surprised that having stores so far apart does not give them a disadvantage in advertising.

They are also kind of odd in NY state - there are (currently) 2 stores (Queensbury and Saratoga) that are kind of close, and they had one for a while in Latham (former Bradlees then Ames) and one in Newburgh - those form sort of a line along the Thruway/Northway. Then one in Massena (which is near not much of anything) while the other 14 or so are in the western half of NY from Watertown south and west towards Buffalo.

The stores in Westfield, MA and Hamden, CT are 68 miles apart from each other, which I guess isn't too bad. However, the other New England stores are even farther apart from each other.
Perhaps in small metropolitan areas and/or in not so dense areas in the outer areas of larger metropolitan areas, the chain might be fine as a one store kind of operation. e.g.Westfield MA is part of Springfield's metropolitan area, not Boston's.
In Brick, it's part of the Monmouth-Ocean market of the greater NYC metropolitan region and I think there are atleast 3 major malls, and two outlet store centers, along with regular big box competitors like Kohl's, Burlington, etc. in just those two counties. I agree that it would seem disadvantaged in the numbers still, with just one store in a dense area with a lot of competitors.
The Hamden, CT Bon Ton will be closing in January 2017.

Friend of mine works at the JC Penny's at the Eastern Hills Mall in Clarence, N.Y.
He is hearing whispers that the Bon Ton there will be closing by the end of 2018, which will be the death of a second anchor. With Sears circling the drain, the mall could lose three out of four anchors...which mall leadership is not upset about at all because it will accelerate plans to turn the mall into a "lifestyle center."
Take it for what it's worth...

Hopefully that one in Aviation doesn't lead to too much redoing of the area around it (which is somewhat more "vintage" mall - this location was a Caldor with no outside entry, just the mall one, and that area hasn't gotten too much done to it since).

The problem as I see it is that Bon-Ton really has not established itself as anything different from Penny's or Macy's. It used to be a high-end store, now it's just like any other department store.

There's Boscov's, of course, but only a handful would even make sense if that many.
One of the strongest malls that had a Bon Ton was Park City Center in Lancaster, PA:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Park_City_Center
This mall is also the premier mall of the Harrisburg-Lebanon-Lancaster-York market, nielsen DMA #43, and the only mall in Central PA with an Apple Store.
The Bon Ton is in a pretty decent highway facing position. The replacement tenant should really be macy's, but I wonder if macy's will be too slow to react to pick up this site.
Other wild card tenants:
a. Belk. Belk is expanding and adding a site in Hagerstown MD. It could creep up into Central PA.
b. Kohl's relocation. The Kohl's is in a peculiar position in the mall, and it could upgrade to the Bon Ton's site.
c. Dillards? While I doubt Dillards would exclusively go into this mall, maybe it could pick up a few divested Lord & Taylor stores or the L&T chain out right, and then it has northeast coverage. It services Ohio and Virginia up to Richmond. It would skip over the Pittsburgh market.
Are there any other Bon Ton locations that will are class A sites?

One of the strongest malls that had a Bon Ton was Park City Center in Lancaster, PA:

This mall is also the premier mall of the Harrisburg-Lebanon-Lancaster-York market, nielsen DMA #43, and the only mall in Central PA with an Apple Store.

I wouldn't be shocked if Belk would make the move. Only other Bon-Ton I knew that was even close to A in PA is Wyoming Valley Mall, that's a B++/B+, but they are also losing Sears, and the Bon-Ton store frankly isn't well setup for modern retail. 1st Floor ceilings are too high, and the second floor has visible ceiling damage in several areas.
Berkshire Mall might be a possibility in Reading PA, but I couldn't find recent sales numbers. Last number was 20013 at $387 per sq ft.

I will have to check out Wyoming Valley and Berkshire Mall, but I noticed from Wyoming Valley's website, that PREIT owns Wyoming Valley Mall. PREIT is pretty active in maintaining it's mall properties or divesting them. Considering the mall already has macy's, and Jcpenney, I'd guess PREIT would try not to assume any more department stores there - especially given JCPenney's instability. It might just re-configure the space for entertainment or dining.
I'll likely one day soon visit the Berkshire Mall.
I visited the York Galleria, and I don't think either the Sears or Bon Ton stores are that appealing for another department store replacement. The second level of Sears is somewhat decent, and it's exit is close to the Marshall's exit. I think that anchor could be split into two. The Bon Ton store just doesn't have good placement, and the mall itself isn't that strong.

There is a charter school here in WNY that did the same thing with an old Kmart. Seriously, look at it. I almost caused a car accident the first time I saw it.

It's been mentioned that a school - a career institute for adults took over part of the former KMART in Waterbury, CT. Porter and Chester it's called. The other part of the store is Ollie's Bargain Basement (or whatever you call it). Ollie's opened first. P&C relocated their campus from Watertown. There are no pictures however. https://www.porterchester.com/campus-locations/waterbury-ct/
I was poking around the second floor of the Bon Ton at Eastern Hills Mall when I noticed an "Associates Only" door that was open. I figured it was some sort of stockroom, but upon investigation, I discovered that it was an old, unused fitting room from the days when the store was AM&A's. You can tell by the old teal door with gold hardware.

To the right of this was another door, which was likely added after Bon Ton moved in, which led to a space behind the wall, where I found this neat old rebate label for Craig electronics that expired more than 20 years ago.

My daughter taught at a charter school that had previously been a Cub Foods location
in Toledo, Ohio. It was in a shopping plaza. The school's neighbors were a Mexican
restaurant, a Polish deli and a Goodwill store. She was able to find an apartment nearby
and walked to work every day.

Bon Ton might be back as a more e-commerce focused retailer with a few brick and mortar stores in a few states. I imagine this will be like Montgomery Ward, only with physical retail.
So, wondering, how many Bon-Ton's have been successfully reused so far and/or demolished?
Reconstructed/Reused:
Stroud Mall has been converted into a ShopRite.
Westgate Mall is tentatively scheduled to become Weis Markets, with Weis moving from another location in the Mall.
York Galleria is tentatively scheduled to become storage units.
Lewistown has been converted to "The Bonton Marketplace", a booth style antiques store.
Demolished/Scheduled to be:
Bon-Ton Camp Hill (Harrisburg Metro), along with the attached ex-Borders.
Phillipsburg Mall
Park City Center in Lancaster is tentatively scheduled to be demolished.
Abandoned Projects:
Nittany Mall was to be a potential mini-casino, but the project has been cancelled.
Pre-Bankruptcy
Schuylkill Mall closed, building sold, and demolished with rest of mall.
The Marketplace at Steamtown subdivided by several businesses, will be full in 2020.
i feel for all the stores they just fixed them up not long ago

Right now in Northeast PA, only one I know of is Stroud Mall. It's being converted to ShopRite.
Bon-Ton Camp Hill (Harrisburg Metro) is scheduled to be demolished, along with the ex-Borders.
Park City Center in Lancaster is tentatively scheduled to be demolished.
Nittany Mall has a lease signed for a potential mini-casino, but no further action has occurred.
Part of the Aviation Mall location in Queensbury has been taken up by Ollie's Bargain Outlet.
Two updates:
Nittany Mall mini-casino project is scrapped.
Phillipsburg Mall is tentatively scheduled to be demolished.
Updated: Westgate Mall in Bethlehem PA will tentatively become a Weis Markets.
A few updates:
Westgate Mall locations interior is fully stripped awaiting renovations to Weis.
York Galleria is tentatively scheduled to become storage units.
Lewistown has been converted to "The Bonton Marketplace", a booth style antiques store.

A mall with storage units? Interesting in how that will work out. Of course, here in a semi-dead mall, there's a charter school, a dance academy, a community tv studio and a automotive training school (in the old Montgomery-Wards auto garage).

Several ex-Macy's have been changed to storage so far including Lycoming Malls. Common use for old Kmarts have also been converting them to storage.
