When they did that construction, it really made my blood boil! I am still very angry with what they did, turning it into a shopping center. I remember when they built the mall in 1971. I worked at the Fayva Shoes that used to be in it that was shut down in 1994. The Thrift Drug too.

Yeah, I know where that shopping center is (was I guess). It is in a horrible location (almost impossible to enter because of traffic) and I wonder how well the Lowe's does in there. I remember driving past because I was in the area and needed something. The Weis was closed, andjust about everything else was as well, but you could see what each store was from the little signs under the overhang.

He's now back at Sears Roebuck after being fired from Sears Canada in 2004.  He was named Sears Canada CEO in 2001. I was there in july 2004 and the store was not boarded up yet. Too bad the store will soon be demolished to make way for another Lowe's ..!

IT IS IN DORCHESTER on morrissey blvd. IT was 85,000 square feet and replaced ORbit department store that closed in the mid 1970s. IT is now National liquidators wholesale.

this is even worse than the last time I saw the store. I was in pittsfield last year and I saw some of it gated off and not as much grass was on the ground!!! I heard it may become Dick's, Iparty and Bed bath and beyond.

It was never a woolco. I remember reading an article on the Pittsfield paper about Bradlees closing and it said Bradlees opened there in October 1965. The bradlees in Westbrook Maine and Woburn massachusetts looked like this one.

It was never a woolco. I remember reading an article on the Pittsfield paper about Bradlees closing and it said Bradlees opened there in October 1965. The bradlees in Westbrook Maine and Woburn massachusetts looked like this one.

it looks simaler to the bradlees in new city NY in a way only im guessing thsi one was bulit in the 1970's this one also clsoed in 2001

This Bradlee's is now a Burlington Coat Factory.  It's on Rt. 20 near the intersection of 146 in Worcester, MA.  Here's a picture I took today of the sign and the plaza.

Y'all forgot the one in Clifton, New Jersey too. That's a Kohl's as well. On Route 46 in West Paterson, there is a Kohl's there but before the Kohl's it was a Caldor.

The smallest Bradlees was in Dennisport MAss, it was 37,000 square feet and is now a Ocean State Job Lots and looks like it was built in 1964 or 1965.  The cape cod stores were smaller. The one in burlington mass had a pizza hut in it. WHICH OTHERS HAD A pizza hut in it. I heard dorchester mass one on Morrissey Blvd did. IT was 5 years ago from this time  Bradlees closed its doors. BRadlees was known for its housewaears. There are some vacant  Bradlees out there! Like FOxboro mass is probably still vacant. the one in Concord nh will be torn down this spring to be built into Lowe's. I still cannot get over why Bradlees in Providence RI opened in MArch 1996 and it announced in August 1996 that it would be a part of 14 closings and it closed 2 months after that annoucement. why was it so short lived. they started opening new stores when they got out of bankruptcy, and one was scheduled to open around philadelphia in late 2000/early 2001, but the store fell through and when it would have opened was when Bradlees imploded.

some not boarded up may have something to do with age of the building and maybe because those boarded up bradlees were near areas that have not much retail activity. them being locked ,they could break in.

idk i dont think they shoudl have opend stores after they got out of ch 11 bad move for them  but i guss they wanted to reclam them if anything i think bradlees should have gone first and not caldor

it closed when all the rest closed in early 2001. the one in new city closed in 2001 also. the one in newington CT and EAst HARTFOrd (where burlington coat is) closed in 1996 waves (Which seemed to be one of their worst years).

AmesNewinton - I liked that Walmart too. My family used to go there often as at the time it was the closest one to Bristol. My mom didn't like shopping there because she couldn't stand the fact that you could rarely understand the people who were speaking over the intercom. I agree. I also was at the manchester one a month ago and my pictures where posted a few pages back. the parking lot is terrible and the lettering is in bad shape. bradlees for some stoers only renovated the inside, yet caldor renovated most stores, but bradlees did not and it is surprised for that and other reasons that bradlees outlived caldor by 2 yrs. bradlees should have renovated most store exterior. the best party about that is that they are all different looking instead of the you have seen one you have seen them all.

chains have a tendancy to close newer stores as they did not work out, catch on or make as much money as they thought and newer stoers tend to have higher rents as the older stores have lower rents and a long establishment in the community or city. all chains have closed many newer stores. yes a lot of bradlees stores wehre run down, like both in nashua, north andover mass, woburn mass, westbrook me, hartford ct and manchester ct, new city ny etc etc. but I know they closed an awful looking east haven CT store in teh first wave and closed the one in lewiston me and lewiston is a dumpy city and that store must have been bad and the store looked old (I never went to the store, but saw where it was yeras after it closed)

Those pictures barely tell what most Bradlees looked like in their final days. Ones near me were brown/tan and dingy looking until the very end. Store usually smelled like salted, buttered popcorn too near the entrance...

I never shopped at Caldor but from what i know, the stores were quite nice and modern.  Caldor was often presented as an upscale discount store chain.  Bradlees was not like Caldor like you said but they managed to remain in business a bit longer.  It makes me wonder why Caldor did not GOB later than that if they had better locations and stores?

I know that you had a bad experience with Bradlees but not all stores were old, yucky and located in bad parts of towns.  Kohl's took over many former Bradlees.  :yup:

I'm not sure what a true, original Bradlees store looked like (or if they had any original concept stores in their heyday (not in the later 90s, when they remodeled some existing stores). A lot of the stores in my area were once owned by Two Guys, Kings and Jefferson Ward.

You might be thinking of the former Fairfield, Connecticut store which is pictured somewhere on the forums here by SiteRide. As far as I know, that logo was probably a temporary; it's far too generic/MS Word looking to serve as a company logo.

Sure looked different than the Bradlees I knew. Unless you're talking about the red present in the store, but other than that, the stores I know were remodeled since then.

As some of the photos in this thread show the signage is still up and the building vacant, I was by there yesterday and nothing's changed. I've heard talk of a BJ's and a Lowes's going in but nothing concrete. The dock shopping center where this Bradlees is used to be a Stop & Shop company's big 3. The S&S used to be where Petco and Toyworks are before a Super S&S was built out back. Bradlees is still in it's original spot and a Medi-Mart used to be in Staples. Medimart changed to Walgreens and after Stop and Shop moved out back Staples moved into what is now a vacant spot next to Toy Works (I believe part of what is now Petco was added on around that time). When Walgreens moved to a freestanding store several miles away, Staples moved next door.

Bridgeport, CT
Bradlees in Bridgeport opened in 1975 in what was a former Shopper's Fair (I don't know much about the chain except they had another location in Bridgeport). It had a brown front roof with a white logo and really wasn't updated much over the years. It closed in 2001 and is now divided into 4 stores: AJ Wright, a mattress store, Models and a junky store called Teddies.

Derby, CT
The Derby stored closed around 1996, well before the whole chain went under. It was in a plaza just off Rt. 8 exit 16 northbound (there is no exit 16 southbound) which also had a Woolworths and Stop and Shop. In the '70s this store had an unusual sign instead of the traditional logo there were different colored blocks each containing a white letter that ran pretty much the length of the store which spelled out Bradlees. Today it is a Shoprite.

Shelton, CT
This store was built around 1982 in a plaza with a Super Stop & Shop. There is still a trash can there with the Bradlees, S&S and Medi-mart logos on it, although there was never a Medi-Mart there. Today the former Bradlees has been split in two with Bed, Bath and Beyond in one side and a local shoe chain called, Hawley Lane Shoes in the other.

Wow what a find! And the store locators are wonderful. This must've been from the late 1960s or possibly 1970 (kept in immaculate condition). This is evident because of that logo they discontinued in the early 1970s for the one that became the standard until the very end. Also, Newington, CT isn't on the list (not too sure when it opened, guessing mid 1970s).

Live Maps is certainly fun to use but don't be fooled --  some of the birdseyes are years old while some are very recent. Since they don't date the imagery, there's no definitive way to tell. Of course, when you're looking at your local mall and it still says "Filenes," that's a dead giveaway of sorts.

Also note, some angles on the Birdseye feature are from different times/years (usually ranges from months apart), so check out all the angles. I'll give you an example, I was looking at the site of the now departed Fairfield Mall and saw the Bradlees being demolished while the other angle showed it gone already.

It's a wonderful and somewhat addictive tool especially when you can't get out to see the location. Of course, if you want to know if some things are still there, you can always call a nearby retailer and just ask yourself.

It's on South Road, right down the road from IBM. There's a Stop & Shop next door. It's Linens 'n Things, Michael's and Office Depot now. It closed before the chain closed.
