Since there was a topic about GOB sales you've been to on this board, I decided to create a topic about stores that closed in your town. It doesn't only have to be an official GOB sale, it could also be stores that mysteriously closed.

I found in an old newspaper article that the Lechmere plaza was once home to an Anderson-Little. Not sure how long ago that was (as I always remember Lechmere owning that entire building). Anyway here's a few I remember from my surrounding towns. I'd call a few from my town but everything retail is surrounding it...

Nobody Beats The Wiz (was near Bradlees)
I forgot The Wiz. Of course that store was demolished and now is just additional parking spaces for Wal-Mart. Panera Bread was built in front of the plaza near where the Wiz was.
Hechinger's probably closed in the early '90s, because Dick's opened in 1994. Next door was Ames, which I believe opened in 1987 and was once a food store ever since the 50s I think. It's nice to remember old times:)
AmesNewington, I'm thinking about beginning an official thread for our Caldor's transformation to Stew's. If you've got a camera, would you mind keeping an eye on it? I'm trying to get there every week (or bi-week) as my school, CCSU, is like 10 minutes away.
Anyway, I do remember Hechinger's right next to Ames. I also remember when they renovated Dick's...

Marc, since there is a rumor the Bristol Shaw's is closing, do you have any idea about Newington? We lost Foodmart last year so Shaw's recieved at least a little more business, and anytime I go there, the store is crowded. Also it being on the turnpike may help. However, Aldi is opening down the road soon, and the Foodmart space is rumored to be replaced by another food store. Do you have any idea what Shaw's will think about doing with the Newington store, since you've worked for them and know their ways of thinking.
All I know is what they said when I left Shaw's in May 2006. The new parent company of Shaw's - SuperValu Inc. was gonna spend time evaluating the performances of all the Shaw's/Star Market stores and close down under performing locations. Thus far they've closed down 11 locations since October 2006. - Southington, Bridgeport, New Britain, Glastonbury, and now Waterbury in Connecticut. Worcester, New Bedford, and Hyanis in Massachusetts. And now 2 in the Providence area.
Of course we're are a rival company most in management at Price Chopper (and even us regular employees) believe Shaw's will be out of Connecticut all together by 2010. Some believe the whole company may go under.
I heard somewhere (maybe here) that the Newington Shaw's was one of, if not the most profitable Shaw's in the state. Of course, Price Chopper came, and Stew Leonards if you want to count it. I can't understand why variety seems to be slimmer. If Shaw's closes, the town would have two regular supermarkets left.

Ah...you have every type turning into every type of buiding across the country...I hate fitness centers.....grrrrrr
We have had another Wards location from the 80's turn into a church. Actually it is the old Lakeland Mall that went out completely in 90 or 91. It housed Wards, Sam's J.C. Penney, Belk and other stores. Sears at that time was right across the street in its own shopping center called 'Sears Town' which is still there but the old Sears location is a college and it now has Subway, Big Lots, Dollar General, Family Dollar, Save A Lot, and a chinese resturant. The place has gone to crap over the last 10 years or so. I also know that the fitness center that i previously mentioned may be kicked out real soon for lack of business.
There have been so many retail changes in my area, it's hard to remember them all! Where to begin...I have it broken up by shopping center
-Jamesway/Acme...demo'd for a Sears Hardware and Redner's Warehouse Market (around 1995)

-Another independent market (Shop 'n Bag), now a carpet place
-Drive-In Movie Theater (owned by AMC at one point), demolished around 2000 for a Target, Lowe's, Genuardi's Market (now owned by Safeway), Bed Bath and Beyond
-Shoprite?/Pathmark/closed in 2005, became Waterloo Gardens in 2007
-Rickel Home Center (adjacent center to ^)-Closed in late 90's/Staples/Now Vacant
-(Pantry Pride market?)/Genuardi's--closed in 1994 I think/Now a very dirty Petco
-50's Acme Market/Drug Emporium up to 2003/Demolished for a free standing Rite Aid
-Frank's Nursery-Now a Goodwill store
-ShopRite/AARP Discount Pharmacy/demolished for a Commerce Bank and open space
-Caldor--closed in 1999/Ames for about 2 years/Burlington Coat Factory for another year or so/being remodeled for a Mealey's Furniture
-Silo Electronics/i.Goldberg Army-Navy/generic furniture store/now a Planet Fitness
-Thrift Drug/(renamed Eckerd)/dollar store/vacant
-Boston Market (opened as Boston Chicken)/SaladWorks
-?/Coconuts Music/Vacant
-Channel Hardware/Opened as one of the area's first Wal-Mart's in 1997
And the next shopping center is my favorite...soo many changes and it's only 10 years old!
-Crown Books--went out after a few years/split between Famous Footwear/a new Mattress Giant/H&R Block
-HomePlace/split between Ross, Rag Shop, some tween boutique
-OfficeMax/now A.C. Moore Arts & Crafts (operated/s directly next to Rag Shop for about a year)

Hmm...
In East Hartford, Connecticut -
J.M Field's became Burlington Coat Factory (circa 1976) - Furniture Warehouse (2004)
Woolworth (downtown east Hartford) became a beauty school.
woolworth (Silver Lane Plaza) Exotic Pets & Fins
Silver Lane Rexall Pharmacy - ? - then Rose City Auction (a pawn shop)
Stop & Shop became Comsumers Appliances then a Staus Auto - when I left East Hartford, it was still empty.
(Stop & Shop moved to a new location - Charter Oak Plaza)
Stop & Shop <first COP location> became Amazing, Dave's Deals now BigLots.
PapaGino's, Guardsmen men, Athletic Attic, Fayva Shoe - became Stop&Shop second COP location.
Bradlee's became Burlington Coat Factory and Aaron's Rentals in 2003.
Mammouth Mart - Mars -Edwards - Big Y
Popular Supermarkets - Top Notch (Burnside Ave Location) - Burnside Furniture.
First National <Silver Lane> - Finast - Top Notch (Silver Lane location) - Best Food Warehouse - three d bed & bath - salvation Army and the location is now building an ALDI.
How about this -- A united methodist church became a SEAPARK department Store, which in 2000 closed and was torn down.
My list isn't very big (and likely not very complete) but I thought I'd post it anyways
Warren, PA
Jamesway - July 1992. Closed due to a flood. 4 feet high water throughout and the second disaster the store had since opening. There had also been a fire years before and they rebuilt on the same exact spot. The building was divided up into 3 storefronts but is owned by Valu Home Centers out of Buffalo, NY. Advance Auto Parts rents part of the building and Family Dollar had rented the other spot til it closed. That spot is still empty. The building has kept its rep as disaster prone since Jamesway left. It has almost flooded numerous times, almost burned down a few times and had a partial roof collapse this passed memorial day weekend. I blame the Jamesway cart sitting in the electrical room...j/k.
Waldenbooks - March 2007. Was in the mall and victim to Borders deciding to close alot of the mall stores. I was there every pay day until they closed buying everything I could. They actually did great business considering their location.
Quality Markets - August 2007. Same plaza as the above. Sits a little higher so it doesn't quite have the flood risk. Penn Traffic closed this store I think because they didn't want to compete with Wal-mart but had almost been closed a few other times. Even former employees say it was actually Thornes Bilo (also owned by Penn Traffic) that caused the demise. Bilo added a gas station and business took off so Penn Traffic opted to close Quality since it was under-performing.
Kresge - Not really sure of when the store closed as it was before my time but I know the Liberty St Plaza is in its place and has been since the store closed.
Others I know of but not really any reasoning or info: ACME, KB Toys, County Market, Bath and Body Works...
Sorry about all of the detail. I actually worked for Valu Home Centers until December of 2007 so I experienced alot of the almost disasters.

Oscoda, Michigan
* IGA, closed 2003?, now Dollar General
* A&P, closed 1992, became Big Value 1993, Carter's late 1993, closed 2007, vacant
East Tawas:
*Giantway. Closed early 1990s, became Glen's, closed late 1990s. Save-a-Lot is now in 1/3 of the old store, the middle portion is still vacant (!), and the other 1/3 is now a health center.
*Kroger. Started out on one side of US23 in what is now a Sears. Moved across street late 1970s (?) into what became Carter's IGA 1983. Closed 2007, now Neiman's Family Market.
Alpena:
*Tempo. Closed 1980s?, became Fisher's Big Wheel, then Quality Farm & Fleet and vacant space, now Tractor Supply, Dollar Tree and vacant space. There's an A&P in the same plaza which closed ca. 1992, became Ripley Street Station, and has been closed for a few years now.
*Kroger. Downtown location became Glen's 1980s, closed late 1990s, now Save-a-Lot. South of town location became IGA 1980s and is now Neiman's Family Market.
*Giantway. One south of town became Glen's early 1990s, closed late 1990s, now Big Lots. The other was downtown and is now offices.
*Kresge. Became McCrory 1987, then Smart Valu Variety, now vacant. Same plaza as the downtown Kroger.
Alpena Mall has had plenty of closures in the past 5 years, including KB Toys (former Circus World), Fashion Bug, f.y.e. (former Camelot Music), Pearle Vision, Regis Hair Salon, Hallmark, Lee's Clothing (former Winkleman's). Long before this, the south anchor was Kmart, which moved across the street. The former Kmart became Stage (now Glik's), Gordon Food Services, and one empty section remains.
Bay City:
*Hampton Towne Centre. Opened mid 1970s with Kmart and local chain Wiechmann's. JCPenney added on in 1990, only to move two years later to Bay City Mall (which itself opened in 1991). After Wiechmann's closed in 1993, the whole mall went into a tailspin. Kmart closed in 2003, and since then it's been almost entirely composed of offices. Wiechmann's is now a school, and the former JCP is now a Family independence agency. Behind Wiechmann's is a former A&P which closed ca. 1992 and is now a thrift shop.
*Giantway. There were several, as this was the chain's home base. One on Center Rd. is now a Save-a-Lot, one on M-13 at M-84 is now a fruit market, and I forget the rest.
*Farmer Jack. Here's a strange one. Farmer Jack was in the middle of this plaza. Between it and the strip's south anchor (Wal-Mart) was a string of shops. After FJ closed, the stores in that strip subdivided the former FJ space, and that whole south half of the strip (from FJ to the existing WM building) was torn down to expand the WM.
*Countless chains at Bay City Mall, including Villa Pizza, Limited (early 1990s), Sveden House, County Seat (late 90s), Lerner (ca. 2004), Dollar Tree, Fashion Bug (moved out), Foot Locker (closed, re-opened, closed again), Finish Line, Pac Sun, Wilson Leather, etc.
