I'm wondering too.  I can understand that the whole buyout story has slowed down expansion and expenses but I think they will eventually expand.

There are new stores in Mass.  Many markets in Maine would be great sites for Market Basket:

  • The vacant land at Augusta Crossing
  • Promenade Mall in Lewiston
  • or former Sears at Lewiston Mall
  • Former Kmart in Bangor
  • Dirigo Plaza in Westbrook?
  • a future former Kmart in Auburn?

Can't disagree with any of these, though Bangor might be a bit of a stretch. MB seems focused at the moment on filling in their existing footprint - and with more robust competition from Ahold Delhaize, Wegmans, Aldi etc. that makes sense. In the meantime, that huge Biddeford store remains a focal point on any story about storm preparations. Case in point:

And of course it's the same situation on steroids in the Boston area:

Bangor's one is only 150 miles from the Biddeford one. and Bangor is further from Biddeford than Biddeford is to Lowell.

True, but you have to consider the logistics of distributing that far out from Tewksbury; Bangor is 224 miles from the DC.

Although you have (as an example) a chain like Price Chopper/Market 32, where all their warehousing is around their HQ in Schenectady (in Rotterdam, just outside the city), and they go into bits of PA, over to Worcester area, up into VT & NH (which may be shorter distances but lack easy direct routes in some locations).  Can't be sure but I'd suspect that some of those PA spots are close to that distance?

And there are even more extreme examples such as the Florida Safeway stores that are supplied out of Houston, some 1,000 miles away.

It will replace the previously-announced Walmart Supercenter at The Ridge-Westbrook.

The longstanding rumor is no longer a rumor - Market Basket is coming to the North Country. Can this seasonal resort area with little year-round population support four major supermarkets?

Shaw's will probably be the first to go. I'm glad to see Market Basket expansion continue in Northern New England.

Joeg

It would be nice if they expand to CT

After closing at 6PM daily due to COVID-19 stores will now be open until 8PM every day. Their Sunday closing will actually be one hour later than pre-coronavirus.
