Interesting redesign - adding the metal structure over the right side just to hold those couple small signs, but also the piece with the ShopRite sign (which, had it been extended to come down to the rest of the front to the left by catering would have quite resembled half of the old structures ShopRite was known for years ago, without the building behind it, of course).

Wakefern has accounced two new stores in South Philadelphia:

- A new ShopRite opened last week in the former Whitman Plaza Pathmark. This store replaces the nearby smaller Snyder Plaza ShopRite:

- A new Fresh Grocer will be opening this fall in the former Grays Ferry Pathmark:

It was a Stop and Shop, there was a Shaws up the street in front of Lowes, but that closed some time ago.

Stop and shop closed in 2014, not sure when Shaws closed, but there's an Edge Fitness Club, there now

Shaw's closed in 2000, after being open only 2 years. There was also a Shaw's in Orange for a few years before that in a former Edwards, which is now Raymour & Flanigan. There was also a Pathmark for awhile, which is now Best Buy.

Thank you...Pathmark had lots of stores in Connecticut. The Manchester Shop Rite was a Pathmark...

MA also (at least around Pittsfield)?

Got the new Shoprite flyer today. On page 5 it says "Introducing Wholesome Pantry". Specifically packed for Shoprite. Then it says Shoprite Organic is now Wholesome Pantry Organic. And the Readington Farms Chicken is now Wholesome Pantry Chicken.

Shoprite is coming to Cromwell, CT. It will open in Cromwell Sqaure on Shunpike Road. According to the article it will be taking all of the former XPECT DISCOUNTS and a portion of KMART.

Looking at the facade, it appears likely. That said, here in Maine we never got Kmart Foods-branded supermarkets; the grocery stores were operated as either Cottle's or Martin's, both later Shop 'n Save when Hannaford Bros. bought out their respective partners.

giantsfan2016

Going through the KMART thread one person said it was KMART FOODS. Another said it was Grand Union. I wonder if they have old copies of the Middletown Press at the library from when it opened.

Could actually be both?  Kmart Foods first then GU took over when they got out of that department?

I know we had a couple GU/Kmart combos (or Albany Public that became GU), as well as PC/Kmart combos, in the Albany area.

ShopRite is coming to North Greenbush, NY

Not too surprising, and a good spot for them.

The area has a number of stores, but the other two supermarket chains (Hannaford and Price Chopper/Market 32) are in different areas - the area they are building in has a Target and Super Walmart close by but not the other chains.

The location is also just across the road from the major Interstate exit that many in the vicinity use to get to/from Albany on a regular basis from a good chunk of the county with little store coverage (see below).

Finally - if one looks at the current Albany store, they do their home deliveries in the area of this store and quite a distance to the East (in some cases about a 45 minute drive from the Albany store).

This area is somewhat unusual in that there are quite a few smaller towns to the east in this county, but once you leave the East Greenbush/North Greenbush area, you'll only find one small Hannaford (former independent they bought out) on Route 43 all the way from this store until you get into Williamstown, MA, and NO supermarket at all on the way out Route 20 until you get to Pittsfield, MA!
That's probably why they started offering the home delivery service, and this store will only make that easier to do for the whole area (in fact, the entire eastern 1/2 or more of the county has only 1 old GU turned Tops, and that's in the northernmost corner).

Maybe they need to check with the other ShopRite stores outside the city and see of they could use the extra help.  Seems that if people aren't shopping there due to the tax, they must be shopping elsewhere...

I'm sure either he or the union will help place the laid-off employees. Not all customers who are diverted away from ShopRite in Philly can be expected to just go to their nearest SR outside the city limits, though.

I wonder who'll own that ShopRite? Anyone knows?

giantsfan2016

Harry Garafalo. He owns several other stores. - Milford, West Haven, East Haven, Orange, Stratford, and Hamden I think.

We need a ShopRite on the Berlin Turnpike or even in Berlin. Hoping this family or another will look to expand even further.

I'm hearing rumors a few Shoprites in Connecticut might be up for sale. 2017 could be very interesting.

I heard that as well. I heard the Clinton store was for sale, but who knows the truth to that. In that area, a Whole Foods or Trader Joe's would do so much better than a Shop Rite.

There's always a chance that they would take them over as part of corporate (SRS as a Wakefern subsidiary).  They did that with most of the NY stores when Big V was thinking of leaving due to financial issues, just to ensure that they kept the business (and wholesale volume) of those stores.

Probably only as a last option if no one else was interested in them, though...?
