I wonder if FD are building stand alone stores in East Hartford? I think FD East Hartford stores  are in shopping centers on Main Street and at School Street Square...

Family Dollar in downtown Southington has rebranded as Dollar Tree. My Mom says the Family Dollar sign is still up, but there is a banner that says "Dollar Tree Grand Opening". And Dollar Tree's website now lists 200 Main Street Southington as a store location. This is Dollar Tree's second location in Southington.

It will be interesting to see what happens with the Berlin Family Dollar. There are hardly ever any customers in the store. They should turn that one in to a Dollar Tree or move FD to Farmington Ave. Plenty of possibilities.

They did the same (other than that the store sign has been changed) to the Family Dollar in Rensselaer (NY).
This store was a fairly recently opened one (maybe 2 years) in part of an old Grossman's (and for those who know the area next to what used to be the Joy store).
It is also the only store of this type within city limits (there are a Rite Aid and Aldi as well), which makes it seem like the Family Dollar model would have fit better (as many folks could access that that may have less access to a Walmart or similar store) with it's more variety than a Dollar Tree.

Also that there are two other Dollar Tree stores outside the city in a reasonably close proximity, but no other Family Dollar in the area anywhere.

Were these particular stores looted at all during the Michael Brown riots?

This actually survived the Michael Brown Riots as a Family Dollar. I saw it on the ABC News. Some of the strip malls surrounding it, however, were victims of looting.

Family Dollar's replacement store on East Main Street in Meriden, CT has opened. It replaces the one in the dying Lowe's Plaza. Lowe's remains empty too.

From MYRECORDJOOURNAL.COM

Family Dollar opens on Meriden’s east side

MERIDEN — A new Family Dollar store opened on East Main Street this week.

The store was previously located in the former Lowe’s plaza, but closed so that a 9,000-square-foot standalone building could be constructed at 1324 E. Main St. Kevin Curry and Kevin Danby own the 57,000-square-foot property.

“They want more visibility,” Curry told the Record-Journal in July 2015 when the new Family Dollar was proposed. “When going into existing space, you’re trying out a market. Now that they’ve been in there and know what their sales are, they know if they go into a standalone location they could see an increase in business.”

The standalone store opened for business on Wednesday. While the store is new, plenty of customers were coming and going on opening day.

Curry and Danby considered other uses for the property before Family Dollar. About four years ago, they received site plan approval to build a 13,000-square-foot Hunter’s Ambulance Service facility. But several months later the ambulance service backed out of the move for financial reasons.

There are two other Family Dollar locations in Meriden , at 311 W. Main St. and 560 W. Main St.

In 2013, a developer submitted plans for a Family Dollar store at the northwest corner of East Main and Broad streets. The state Department of Transportation rejected the plan because of traffic concerns.

Economic Development Director Juliet Burdelski has previously called the standalone Family Dollar on East Main Street a “good fit” for the area. Several other developments are underway on the city’s east side, including a new restaurant operated by the owners of Taino Smokehouse in Middletown.

Dollar Tree will be opening in the same plaza that Family Dollar is located in Berlin, CT. There has been no indication that Family Dollar will close. I'm assuming since both stores are now the same company, both wouldn't operate in the same complex.

Family Dollar is building a brand new store in Philadelphia, PA.  It is located on Kensington Avenue, across from the former PRT/PTC Kensington Shops, on the site of the former Kent Theatre.

We have a family dollar in a old 70's plaza, with a Ocean State Job Lot and a BJ's, and a independent Family Dollar built earlier this year just east of the Frog Bridge. (In Willimantic)
